to think that nobody outside Yorkshire has heard of the Tour de Yorkshire, and those that have heard about it don't care anyway

My local town and paper are getting so over-excited about this bloody bike race, bikes and bunting appearing everywhere. Have you even heard of it? Are you planning to watch it? My mother seems to think it will be a massive event, but I really don't understand the fuss. So AIBU to think that nobody cares?

No no no, chandler simply isn't possible. All dicks come equipped with own bike (& lycra even). Never a driver's license. It's compulsory doncha know. Wink

FunkyPeacock · 17/04/2015 18:56

I live in Yorkshire and I'm also a keen cyclist so unsurprisingly I have heard about TdY!

It passes through my village on May 3rd and I'm pretty excited about it - although not as excited as I was about the TDF last year obviously

I have no idea how much people who don't like in Yorkshire know about it

FunkyPeacock · 17/04/2015 18:57

Live not like!

IceLemonGin · 17/04/2015 20:44

TheChandler The highway code states that's cyclists should ride in single file on busy or narrow roads. Not quite sure how that makes me a dick!

IWannaHoldYourHand · 17/04/2015 20:47

We're not in Yorkshire, and we're looking forward to it.

BikeRunSki · 17/04/2015 20:52

It's a big deal. We have people coming to stay from Gloucestershire and Newcastle to come and see it in the next village on 4 May.

UnoPan · 17/04/2015 21:41

Well good bike craft indicates on narrow roads one 'dominates' the lane for safety reasons - you may not be surprised at the number of real 'dicks' will happily risk one's life and limb to get ahead - til the next traffic lights at least!! That is why it is supported in the HC. So it doesn't really matter if it's one or two bikes beside each other.
It's often a source of wonder why drivers and the HC appear to be strangers to each other.

Shit. It is coming near us. Knobs!

meowth · 22/04/2015 15:40

im in leeds and couldn't give less of a toss about it.

RunningKatie · 22/04/2015 16:08

We're in South Yorkshire and it doesn't come near us, but would be coming to spectate if dh wasn't away.

He's done some of the TDF route, really sad that a lot of the brown signs to show the route have been nicked.

Radiatorvalves · 22/04/2015 16:13

I'm in London and know about it. Thought about going, but unfortunately we have a conflict.

TdeF was fab!

CherryLips1980 · 22/04/2015 16:21

It's coming through our town (barely... and not on the TdF route either) but signs went up over the weekend saying it's a full closure from 7am-7pm, rather than the rolling roadblock I've seen mentioned upthread....

Really don't understand the route they've picked by us - it has to be the most spectator unfriendly way they could have picked for it to go.

Homemadeapplepie · 22/04/2015 16:26

Yes some of the roads are going to be closed for a while but on the plus side we are finally getting some (bits of) roads repaired and resurfaced.

Groovee · 22/04/2015 16:29

I've heard of it and am in Scotland!

DeeWe · 22/04/2015 17:02

I've heard of it. But only because my dsis (and my dn) is from Yorkshire and care passionately about it. You should hear her on the subject.

She wishes it had never been thought of and certainly thinks it should go through their home town, and dn bursts into tears when it's mentioned.
Grin

We quite enjoyed seeing the Britain one go past... along the lines of "Oh look they're c.... gone" Grin

DeeWe · 22/04/2015 17:05

*should not go through their home town

Sallyingforth · 22/04/2015 18:18

Yorkshire? Where's that?

hellocleveland · 22/04/2015 18:21

I live in Surrey and it's a huge deal to me. Travelled to Yorkshire for TDF last year then back to London. Cycling is on our TV pretty much every day in spring/summer. In fact I'm watching Fleche Wallone as I type!

I would love to be at TDY but have to work. Will definitely watch on TV though.

We are going to the penultimate stage of TDF this year on Alpe D'Huez. Dream come true for me.

Bunbaker · 22/04/2015 18:30

"Went to watch the TDF and loved it and I am not a cycling fan! So proud of my home county!"

Me too. It is passing very close to us, so I will probably bike it to the nearest point to watch it. We saw the TdF on Woodhead Pass last year and the atmosphere was just amazing. It was weird being on a road that is usually full of lorries and cars completely empty of traffic and with thousands of people on foot.

Bolshybookworm · 22/04/2015 18:44

I'm hugely exited! It's passing through our village on some really tight, twisty roads, it's a really interesting route they've picked. There's even speed bumps near us! I can't wait, we're taking the kids out and making a day of it and we won't even need to drive Grin.

Hoping it becomes a bit of a classic, yorkshires ripe for it.

Envy Hellocleveland. Make sure you get there days in advance, the Dutch campervans will be out in full force!

rockybalboa · 22/04/2015 18:47

DH is a massive cycling geek so I can't help but be aware of it from the endless piles of magazines lying around...
