to think that nobody outside Yorkshire has heard of the Tour de Yorkshire, and those that have heard about it don't care anyway

My local town and paper are getting so over-excited about this bloody bike race, bikes and bunting appearing everywhere. Have you even heard of it? Are you planning to watch it? My mother seems to think it will be a massive event, but I really don't understand the fuss. So AIBU to think that nobody cares?

I've heard of it and I'm not from Yorkshire. My family will watch it and will travel a fair distance to see it (not Yorkshire based either). Personally I'm not a cycling fan but thousands and thousands are. Live and let live eh!

mrsnoon · 16/04/2015 21:19

I think Look North care enough for all of us! It's passing through the next town to me (as the TdF did) so we might go and watch but purely because the 4 yr old enjoyed the day last time.

MadamG · 16/04/2015 21:19

Im in the Home Counties and know about it. Cycling got big, did you miss the memo?

threeicklepickles · 16/04/2015 21:20

Not in Yorkshire but have heard of it and will be going to watch it.

It goes through the village where SIL & BIL live Grin

bearleftmonkeyright · 16/04/2015 21:21

Yabu, I am a tourmaker and am travelling 80 miles to Wakefield for training on Saturday. Its a massive deal. I shall be there on Saturday May 2nd in a high viz vest in Beverly. There will be lots of people travelling to the area to relive the glory of the tdf. There is also a sportive which sold out real quickly. Were you on holiday for the tdf?

OrlandoWoolf · 16/04/2015 21:24

Well it's not as hyped as the TDF. But that was special though.

londonrach · 16/04/2015 21:32

Ive heard of it and im not interested in bike races even the tour de france and im not anywhere near yorkshire! Showed you how popular bike races are now!

sandgrown · 16/04/2015 21:34

Went to watch the TDF and loved it and I am not a cycling fan! So proud of my home county!

IceLemonGin · 16/04/2015 21:35

I'm from Yorkshire, I'm sick of hearing about it and couldn't care less! I didn't watch TDF either as I have no interest in cycling.

Satsumafairy · 16/04/2015 21:35

I've heard about it. We visit Yorkshire a lot and love cycling so yes, we know it's happening.

toffeeboffin · 16/04/2015 21:35

I've definitely heard of it. I'm from lancashire and my mum sent me over a souvenir t shirt.

My French MIL looked disgusted when she saw it Grin

They have no clue. God's own country! Wink

Crumbelina · 16/04/2015 21:38

I'm in London and I've heard of it. I'd love to be up there to watch it too. Are they going up Buttertubs Pass?

squoosh · 16/04/2015 21:39

Never heard of it and really don't understand cycling as a spectator sport.

worksallhours · 16/04/2015 21:39

People do care. I live on last years' TDF route and the cycling tourism since is noticeable. Every weekend, in nearly all weathers, we see keen cyclists doing parts of the TDF route for themselves, and many cycling clubs from around the country have organised trips to this purpose. TDY is just capitalising on that success.

It's a great thing, to be honest; it brings people and money into the area and supports businesses and local jobs -- and it normalises exercise, sport and fitness.

ouryve · 16/04/2015 21:40

I care about it significantly more than I care about football and that's rammed down my throat everywhere I look. Even in the bloody optician's.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 16/04/2015 21:41

I've heard about it and I'm on the South Coast! I'd love to see it but it's a bit too far and my dses don't share the excitement.

mumeeee · 16/04/2015 21:42

I've heard of it and I live in Wales. My Dsis and Bil went and watched it last year and they are from the South West. So there is probably quite a lot of people all over the country that have heard of it.

chrome100 · 16/04/2015 21:42

I'm in Leeds and missed the TdF last year as I was bloody working! Determined to see the TdY next month.

They are not closing the roads as I understand it, like they did last year. I think the road closures will be rolling, like they do in the tour of Britain.

NakedFamilyFightClub · 16/04/2015 21:47

I've heard of it and I'm not even on the British mainland.

dementedma · 16/04/2015 21:47

My SiL is a Marshall or guide or something which is, apparently, hugely exciting.
Whatever!

EndoplasmicReticulum · 16/04/2015 21:48

Bike Bike Bike

YABU.

That is all.

worksallhours · 16/04/2015 21:49

Squoosh, I am not a cyclist, and don't really like cycling. However, I did go to see the TDF riders go through our village because, well, international sporting event down my road. Grin

But, by crikey, when I saw those TDF cyclists, I didn't know men could look like that. No joke, in the flesh, they look bionic. I was like Shock at their legs.

I said to DH afterwards that I didn't actually think some of them were human. They looked like they had been made in laboratory in Switzerland somewhere.

And it made me realise: I had never actually seen an elite athlete in the flesh before -- never mind, one that was only a foot away. It was a marvel really.

crazykat · 16/04/2015 21:51

It's going through the centre of the city is live in and half the major roads will be closed for it which will be a major pita as the route goes past the park my dcs live in at the weekend but I think we'll give it a miss that day which will result in a few grumpy dcs.

My dad is dreading it too as he has to be at work at 4.30am that day to get the deliverys unloaded before half the roads are closed.

All in all its going to be a massive pita if I need to leave the house to get anything and I'm not looking forward to it. I also hate cycling which may have coloured my view somewhat.
