to think that nobody outside Yorkshire has heard of the Tour de Yorkshire, and those that have heard about it don't care anyway

My local town and paper are getting so over-excited about this bloody bike race, bikes and bunting appearing everywhere. Have you even heard of it? Are you planning to watch it? My mother seems to think it will be a massive event, but I really don't understand the fuss. So AIBU to think that nobody cares?

The Tour de France was an hour from us but it was a busy time of year so didn't get to see it. My sister spent almost 5 hours travelling the hour and got there too late. I am going to go and see the Tour de Yorkshire - even if I do find the name annoying - it passes a relatives farm so it seems silly not to. I am actually reassured that so many have heard of it/do care - our local town do tend to get a bit carried away with themselves if/when anything unusual happens, so it's difficult to judge - almost a bit of a cry wolf thing.

It will give the midlands and the south a rest from the drug dealers though. Wink those cyclists are more drug soaked than the 70s East German swimmers.

Homemadeapplepie · 16/04/2015 22:49

Quite agree MrSlant, the cyclists are awesome, fittest athletes of all, it amazes me how they can come off their bikes and rip all the skin off their legs and get back on and finish when footballers get stretchered off for tripping over someone's foot! Big TdF fan and will certainly be watching the TdY (I live in Yorkshire. Met David Miller, Richard Virenque and Greg Lemond last year at the Tour wood woop!

honeyroar · 16/04/2015 22:50

Does anyone know when it is?.?

bearleftmonkeyright · 16/04/2015 22:51

There are a lot of tourmakers (volunteer route marshalls and guides) involved who are not into cycling but are from the area and want to do their bit. I am very interested in cycling and was very proud to be a tourmaker last year on stage one and feel very fortunate to be doing it all again. It was great fun, a really special day. I was also on a climb, Cote de Cray which was only accessible by bike. There was a great bunch of people there from all over the UK and Europe. We got there by coach and passed through tiny villages with yellow sheep in the fields and bunting on every barn and gatepost. It really was magic.

Theycallmemellowjello · 16/04/2015 22:55

Wasn't this last summer? I'm from Yorkshire and didn't know there was another! Yanbu!

I've heard of it, and I'm not from anywhere near Yorkshire.

Its a short stage race, known for its particularly difficult climbs. The top road cyclists in the world usually take part, and its also a massive spectator event. I will go and watch it if I'm in the UK at the time, as scenery plus elite free athletics make a good combination for a day out.

FreudiansSlipper · 16/04/2015 23:15

I was about to say didn't you see it on tv last year Blush

then realised that was the TDF confused as to why TDF was partly in Yorkshire

f1fan2001 · 17/04/2015 01:08

FreudiansSlipper

They usually have a stage of the Tour De France in another country and someone in Yorkshire thought it would be a great idea to have the stage there and worked his backside off to make it happen Grin

Jengnr · 17/04/2015 02:08

Thank the lord it's not coming near us again. We live right on the TdF route and it was a fucking PITA. And now the roads are full of dicks on bikes riding the route. Angry

KoalaDownUnder · 17/04/2015 02:50

Never heard of it in my life - then again, am not a cyclist and live on the other side of the world! Grin

(Can I send all the annoying fucking road cyclists from here over there?)

shewept · 17/04/2015 06:33

Yabu. I live near the route and will not be going. If dd decides she wants to go, one of us will take her, though. I am not in slightest bit interested. But lots of people are. I think more needs to be made of sporting events out side football. I like that the county, in general, is excited about a sporting event happening here.

RowRowRowCrocodileScream · 17/04/2015 06:41

I'm very excited about it and looking forward to taking DS along to watch. Hopefully he will be old enough to have some clue what is going on unlike the TDF last year when he was still a baby. (The route is a couple of miles from our house.)

carabos · 17/04/2015 06:53

I know this, the TdY website is rubbish. I want to know the exact route they are taking through my town and it doesn't have that level of detail, which the TdF one did. We were trapped in our house during TdF, which was ok as we walked round the corner and saw it, but I would like to know if the same movement restrictions will apply again. This is going to be something of a ballache if its planned to make it an annual event.

ariadneoliver · 17/04/2015 06:56

Hi peloton peeps! Bike
There are some good teams in there (sadly not Etixx-Quickstep so I may not make the journey up) but I'll certainly be watching down here in the south.

FatimaLovesBread · 17/04/2015 08:40

Carabos Our village is part of the thurs stage and we've had letters through the door to tell us of parking restrictions etc and to invite us to a meeting about road closures. AFAIK the restrictions and closures aren't as extreme as last year.

Honey I imagine you're just over the hill from us. The closest point for the TDF for us was Holmfirth and Holme Moss, this one goes through Holmfirth, Meltham and Slaithwaite so no Holme moss climb

whatsthatcomingoverthehill · 17/04/2015 09:03

carabos, it looks detailed to me, zooming in on this shows all the roads it's going on. Road closures seem to be on the council websites.

MagentaOeuflon · 17/04/2015 09:10

Well I'm from Yorkshire (but don't live there now) and your thread title made me go "meh"! No I haven't heard of it and no I don't care! I mean each to their own, if you're into sport and enjoy a sporting event I'm happy for you. But why should anyone else have heard of it?

IceLemonGin · 17/04/2015 16:26

Jengnr YY about the dicks on bikes. The seem to have a fondness of riding doubled up on the roads around me which makes overtaking impossible (I've just started to learn to drive and cyclists scare me more than anything else!)

Talking about sport, I'm more interested in the fact that there are a couple rugby world cup matches that are going to be played at Elland Road in September drools

Wouldn't that make you a dick in a car?

Skiptonlass · 17/04/2015 17:26

It was GREAT fun last time!

Yabu. Pop out and watch it when it's near you, you might be pleasantly surprised.

crazykat · 17/04/2015 18:06

That's the one Sock. I think it's the main route through the city centre that's closed which will cause gridlock. I'm avoiding the park and shops that weekend.
