to think that nobody outside Yorkshire has heard of the Tour de Yorkshire, and those that have heard about it don't care anyway

My local town and paper are getting so over-excited about this bloody bike race, bikes and bunting appearing everywhere. Have you even heard of it? Are you planning to watch it? My mother seems to think it will be a massive event, but I really don't understand the fuss. So AIBU to think that nobody cares?

Its mahoosive for us. Though I will miss it as will be at work elsewhere.

whatsthatcomingoverthehill · 16/04/2015 21:55

Yes YABU. Fair enough that you don't care but plenty of people do. I genuinely think it's something to be proud of. Getting a race of this calibre started from scratch is not an easy thing to do. That Yorkshire managed to get the TdF off their own back, and now doing this is bloody impressive.

It's going through the city I live in and part of the route is less than a mile from where I live - but I have no interest in it to be honest. The council have started putting up electronic signs telling people to expect delays on the day, most of the city centre is closed off, but thankfully we're taking the dc's to Legoland that weekend so won't affect us. Struggling to understand why it's coming through our city though - it ain't the prettiest place, much nicer places in Yorkshire.

avocadotoast · 16/04/2015 22:05

Derek Grin

I haven't heard too much about it. But then I don't watch/read local news really. I definitely am not arsed for it at all though.

ragged · 16/04/2015 22:05

We are mad keen cycling geeks & have heard of it, wish I lived in Yorkshire & could see in person. I can't summon energy to follow all events but will make a try on this one. Thanks for reminding us it's coming. Dates are 1-3 May & broadcast on ITV4 apparently, mostly highlights? at 2:30-4:30.

Is this breaking an embargo (??)

ragged · 16/04/2015 22:07

omg, David Millar is doing commentary (swoon)...

DramaAlpaca · 16/04/2015 22:09

YABU!

Another cycling nut here. Can't wait.

It's going past the end of our road, would be practically on our doorstep but we're away that weekend camping.
Free house for anyone who wants it Wink

Sunny67 · 16/04/2015 22:12

It's going right past our house and we will be watching!! Tour de France went through the next village to us and though we're not into cycling we went to watch, it was brilliant. Anything that shows how fantastic Yorkshire is will do for me! GrinGrin

honeyroar · 16/04/2015 22:15

I live one hill away from Yorkshire (it was Yorkshire when I was born but for stolen) and The Tour de France came very near. We walked across the moor to watch it at Holme Moss, it was superb (but I was already a Tour de France fan and had seen it twice in France when I was a young au pair).

I'd heard of the Tour de Yorkshire, and would happily go and watch, but have no idea when it is. So a few miles over the border and it hasn't been publicised much at all.

Personally I'd love more sports other than football to get more coverage.

crazykat · 16/04/2015 22:15

I wonder if you live near me Sock. The route goes through the centre of my city which isn't the worst looking but isn't exactly great either.

The route goes a five minute walk from my house, of I liked cycling it would be amazing but for me it's just a royal pain as it will mean huge traffic jams and not being able to take the kids to the park for the crowds.

The electronic signs are driving me nuts, there are a few low bridge warning ones that have been put right next to the permanent low bridge warning signs Hmm total waste of electricity.

ClashCityRocker · 16/04/2015 22:16

I loved the Tour de France coming through by us.

It was marvellous, Tescos was absolutely dead and we got our shopping done in record time!

Not my thing, but if it's bringing people to yorkshire, it's got to be good, ain't it?

BikeBikeBike

Thanks OP for drawing attention to just how much biking as a spectator sport and pastime/commuter use has grown in this country. So you are being ridiculously unreasonable and a very inward-looking if I may say. IT will be a BIG thing to the local economy.
and a final Bike for good measure!

UnoPan · 16/04/2015 22:20

ESD - in that case I don't think you've spent v much thinking about it?

Sunny67 · 16/04/2015 22:20

If you're where I think you are Honey you can watch it in Holmfirth on 3rd May

WoodliceCollection · 16/04/2015 22:20

I've heard of it, and I'm in Wales. (Did have cycling nerd boyfriend a while back though so possibly that).

SockPinchingMonster · 16/04/2015 22:23

CrazyKat - sounds like we live in the same city. Was rather bemused by the low bridge warning, right after the permanent sign also - is it the one near the park? I'm so glad that we're away that weekend, sounds like most of city centre will be closed.

Hulababy · 16/04/2015 22:25

I have heard of it but as it isn't coming by us (in Sheffield) its not something we have focused on tbh.

UnoPan · 16/04/2015 22:29
MrSlant · 16/04/2015 22:30

Bradley Wiggins is going to cycle past my mum and dads house.

They are the fittest athletes out there, never have a day off really and because the races are so long the winner can't really be the person who can go fastest the whole time, you can't sprint for that length of time, it's not sport it's politics, there are alliances and feuds and a real heirachy. and tonnes of gorgeous European men with just the best thighs possible Best Sport EVER.

Eustasiavye · 16/04/2015 22:37

I'm from yorkshire and when I tried to explain where I live to foreigners on holiday, they all without exception knew where yorkshire was because of the TDF.

I don't cycle myself but like others have said find it far more preferable to football, which we are all supposed to care about.
