I can't bake a cake to save my life but every other mum seems to confidently knock up a perfect spongey masterpiece for any occasion!! When did they all learn this?!!!

I can't have a "mum" home. It's (usually) clean etc but never matches/looks artistically mis - matched. Just slightly untidy and functional. It doesn't help that I love a bargain so often have stuff I've bought in those "not quite £1 shops" full to the rafters with mixing bowls with roses on and marbled effect washing up bowls.

My mum and gran = great at the house looking cohesive. Not me.

I have ONE nice room (dining room) which is kept that way using plastic table cloths most of the time! Oh except it has a big fridge in the corner which I ended up covering in magnets from holidays, and now my mates buy me them too.

Baddz · 16/04/2015 10:00

I dont mind playing with them but whatever they do its only for 5 bloody minutes!
Both dc like baking. As do I.
Ds2 likes colouring. As do I Blush
Ds2 is minecraft mad though and i just dont get it

tilliebob · 16/04/2015 10:01

Cooking! I can bake but why bother when the baker does it so much better The whole nurturing your offspring by feeding them nutritious morsels has totally bypassed me!

RedToothBrush · 16/04/2015 10:08

What's the difference between Mummy and Daddy skills?

I am finding this thread a little depressing because of the sheer amount of gendered stereotypes in it and the horrible term Mummy-skills.

I think 'mummy-skills' begin and end with loving, providing and comforting. Beyond that they are just skills.

squizita · 16/04/2015 10:17

Red in my house daddy skills = cleaning.
Mummy skills is paying for the bloody money pit and anything involving planning and design. Except the 2 things clash violently eg. £5 for a Salter chrome look washing up bowl or £2 for a sickly pink one off the market? Confused

Still we don't have to look at the bowl on days out and holidays made possible by my tight ways.

muminhants · 16/04/2015 11:03

Mummy skills? I'm not sure I have any of them :)

Definitely nothing crafty. I hate school dressing-up days with a passion (hopefully now ds is at secondary they are thing of the past).

Fortunately I have a clever DH who can bake cakes and do arty things. However, I always buy birthday cakes. For school fayres I've made Mars bar cakes.

He sews on scout badges too as I get too annoyed trying to do it. And when I do do it they eventually come off again.

I am really useless. There was another thread somewhere about what skills did your parents teach you. Both my parents were/are very practical - my mum was good at sewing and cooking etc and my dad could do anything round the house like plumbing, electrical work, built his own loft conversion etc. I am completely useless. But I don't think it's their fault for not teaching me, I just wasn't remotely interested and they probably simply chose their battles. I could wire a plug and check the oil on the car, and that was the sum total of my practical skills when I left home.

muminhants · 16/04/2015 11:05

What I CAN do: a decent roast dinner and a shepherds pie. The afore-mentioned Mars Bar cakes. That's about it though!

Jetgir1 · 16/04/2015 11:09

I can bake but I can't sew, do anything crafty, do any hairstyle more complicated than a pony tail and I have no clue about girly things like fashion and make up. It's not great that I was blessed with 2 dds... although the youngest is a tomboy the eldest I have to send to her older cousin for fashion advice ??

var123 · 16/04/2015 11:09

School costumes for dressing up days. I HATE the stress they cause me with a vengeance (and the arrogance from a TA at the school that if a costume is not home made, then its not worthy).

CallieG · 16/04/2015 11:13

I can Crochet, Knit, do Embroidery, Tapestry & most other hand crafts, I am an accomplished watercolourist & have a talent for FolkArt & flat brush acrylic painting, I am learning to use oil pastels, I am a great cook mostly self taught & have a1 baking skills BUT I cannot for the life of me make even a halfway decent roast potato, my melt in the mouth meats and cooked to perfection vegetables are accompanied by pathetic little blobs of potato the always stick to the pan and loose their crispy outer which ends up like burnt offerings in the bottom of the roasting dish, I eventually gave up, now I half boil them & then deep fry them like chips at least they are edible and are OK with gravy (which is perfect BTW)

WeirdCatLady · 16/04/2015 11:17

I am currently knocking up a Wonder Woman costume so my craft and imagination skills area top notch. I can also bake and cook.

But I cannot make a pancake to save my life. They always end up looking like scrambled eggs

WeirdCatLady · 16/04/2015 11:19

CallieG - I highly recommend Aunt Bessies Frozen Roast Potatoes.

esiotrot2015 · 16/04/2015 11:30

Mine are 11 and 8 and I can no longer feign delight at going to the park for the millionth billionth time
All those hours pushing swings have taken their toll Hmm

Sothisishowitfeels · 16/04/2015 11:35

I can't do that thing where mums fuss over their childrens feet it's hard to describe but when say mil comes round she suddenly produces socks, slippers and God knows what else to cover my childrens feet. I am a failure at foot care.

Sothisishowitfeels · 16/04/2015 11:36

Oh and I cant neatly plait hair which is a shame as I have 4 daughters....

Millionprammiles · 16/04/2015 12:14

Martyrdom. I'm rubbish at it. Oh wait was I supposed to list something I actually want to be good at? Grin

KiaOraOAotearoa · 16/04/2015 12:14

million Grin

sherazade · 16/04/2015 12:49

Can't do:
Waking up early
Nice neat hairstyles. My sis is a hairdresser and says my 2 dads have the most amazing hair to style but the best I can do is run a comb through it
Baking
Crafts
Sewing stuff
Being playful

MrsBigginsPieShop · 16/04/2015 12:53

Cooking. Watching Masterchef isn't making me feel better either. I can do a decent omelette and that's it. DS eats omelette a lot.

however · 16/04/2015 14:00

Wrap presents properly.

mrsmugoo · 16/04/2015 14:05

I can't bake (that's what waitrose is for) and I'm not into crafty/painty/messy stuff (that's what nursery's for)

I can however do complicated plaits and hair dos and makeup but alas I don't have a daughter :(

moohootoo · 16/04/2015 14:29

i do not believe nobody cannot cook any body can if they put their mind to it

tilliebob · 16/04/2015 14:31

Oh I can cook - I just detest the time it takes, get no pleasure from it and can think of a zillion things I'd rather do with the time.

geekymommy · 16/04/2015 14:44

I can't do fancy hairstyles. But I have fine hair that has a mind of its own, and DD seems to have inherited it, so it probably wouldn't make much difference if I could.

I don't sew. That's what stores that sell secondhand kids' clothes are for.

I can't do sports of any kind. The kid who was always picked last for teams in gym class? That's me. If DD or DS (due in July) want to do sports, they will have to find someone other than me or DH to coach them and play with them.

Sarn1234 · 16/04/2015 14:54

I cant sew, but have made a few fancy dress costumes with bad sewing, no one knows you can hide it but good at crafty sticking and glueing making easter bonnets. I liked
making cakes and cooking with my daughter. I found it hard to watch puppet shows, play dollies and houses and schools. I got really bored. My daughter is 12 now and doesn't want to do anything with me, my boys are grown up and think they know it all, so basically dont need much parent skills apart from shouting when a fight breaks out lol!
