Short people problems!

WibblyWobblyHead · 14/04/2015 10:15

Why oh why do almost every clothes shop put short length jeans on the top shelf/hangers? Where's the sense in that?! Confused

What other short people problems really annoy you?

My solution to travelling on the tube was to get on nearest to the end of one of the carriages so that if there weren't seats I could stand leaning up against the joining doors (I perfected the art of sleeping standing up there!)

TeaInGlasgow · 14/04/2015 23:26

I remember years ago visiting American Adventure with family and going on the Skycoaster (I think that's what it was called). They'd strap you into a body harness, hook you on to a wire and winch you quite high up, then you'd pull a cord and drop and swing.

My ever loving family thought it was hilarious that I had to have the child's harness. On the plus side, the adult harnesses were a drab grey or brown whereas the child's one was a lovely purple.

BathshebaDarkstone · 15/04/2015 04:57

Oh I have to stand on tiptoe to put my number in the card reader at Cafe Nero.

Cirsium · 15/04/2015 05:47

Going to the physio with back issues and being told how to sit properly in a chair, when I (very nicely) pointed out most chairs are too high for me she suggested I carry a box or footstool around with me. Hmm

People meeting me for the first time and within half an hour going 'oh you're really short!' One of these days I'll be on the ball enough to point out an obvious physical trait of theirs in retort.

Chip and pin machines that are too high/across checkouts and immovable. Only noticed this when I was pregnant and now when have DD in sling.

Cirsium · 15/04/2015 05:57

I did discover car pedal extenders when I was pregnant though (after a panic about not being able to fit behind the steering wheel anymore and having to get to work in a rural area). They cost about £125 with a mechanic friend fitting them, but mean even not pregnant I am in a safer, more comfortable driving position.

EmpressOfJurisfiction · 15/04/2015 05:58

Cirsium, commenting on an obvious physical trait in return is always good, but I've also got good results from just looking confused and asking why they're commenting on my height? Let them dig themselves into a hole from there.

BathshebaDarkstone · 15/04/2015 06:03

Grin @ Empress. Also U for not just moving the milk forward when they can see it's getting low and at the back. I can reach it if it's at the front. Angry

Aridane · 15/04/2015 06:05

Oh, another one to add to my list - swimsuits! Though on the plus side, I do now have a rather good selection of bikinis. Hardly marks me out as the serious swimmer I (like to think) I am.

And rankings don't do it for me either, despite regular / tall people recommending them...

sashh · 15/04/2015 06:08

I'm 5 foot 0.5 inch and have size 2.5 feet. I can't find elegant shoes in that size and have written off ever having court shoes as they slip off the back of my foot so I look like I'm playing 'dress up' in my mum's shoes.

Have you tried a dance shop? Or a sari shop?

lastnightiwenttomanderley · 15/04/2015 06:21

Sidge and other small-footers..

I'm a size 2. Kurt Geiger, Jimmy Choo, Rupert Sanderson, Sergio Rossi and Christian Louboutin are your friends. What's a girl to do? Wink I have nowhere near as many shoes as SIL but mine are gorgeous - I've got a pair of choos still going strong after 12 years! Bicester can also be very good for all of the above if you're lucky.

A '3' feels bigger as its actually no longer a 3 - most shops have moved to European sizing so fob you off with a 36 when a 3 is more like a 35.5.

lastnightiwenttomanderley · 15/04/2015 06:23

Ooh, and Vince Camuto

manchestermummy · 15/04/2015 08:31

5'2" here. The step stool in the kitchen is for use by me.

I can't drive DH's car as it has a central dash and once I've moved the seat to I can't see it without turning my head completely.

Going underneath my very tall colleague's arm when he holds doors for me.

GiantGaspingSatanicCyst · 15/04/2015 09:47

I'm surprised any woman is wearing trousers that fit tbh. Like Buttercup I'm 5'4" and can count on one hand the number of trousers I've had in my life that fit first time. It was easier when I was slimmer, admittedly, but at an in-proportion 12-14 I don't think I'm unusually shaped in any way; yet all trousers are either right length, won't go past my thighs OR slightly baggy at the top and pooling around my ankles.

My best pal is 5'11" and very picky about her trousers also as most high street brands are either too long or too short.

Every day I marvel at seeing women walking the streets in well fitting trousers. Where do they get them from? And do they hate clothes shopping as much as I do?

DesertIslandPenguin · 15/04/2015 09:54

Why have I never thought of using a potato masher to close windows?? Last time DH opened the kitchen windows I had to go outside and push them closed so that I could lock them. I'm sure his arms are too long.

Almostapril · 15/04/2015 10:08

I keep a potato masher just for that reason

claireruan · 15/04/2015 10:30

I writ's about this a few weeks ago lifeloveanddirtydishes.com/life/10-short-girl-mummy-problems/

goldylookingpane · 15/04/2015 15:27

Re: a potato masher.

Today in Marks & Sparks I saw two little old ladies using their walking sticks to hook down clothes that were too high for them reach!

Where there's a will there's a way!

Apologies for butting into shorties thread uninvited. I'm 5 foot 7

Giant Regular trousers with a 32 inch inside leg are usually the correct length for me these days.

Trousers have lengthened noticably over the last 20/25 years - I'd say 3 inches. When I was a teenager, I had to get long and they were only just long enough. Now I usually get regular or occasionally long but there's definitely more choice for me.

I put it down to women getting noticeably taller on average (sorry). When I was younger I almost never saw a woman taller than me, but I now I see loads, and feel that I'm average height or only slightly above. I know a lot of women that are 5'10 and above.

But bastard trousers still almost never fit me because I'm curvy and most trousers seem to be cut for apple shapes.

whatawhoppa · 15/04/2015 16:45

Im not short, but for those struggling to reach the bottom of a trolley have you tried puttng a shopping basket in the bottom? When you get nearly unpacked you should be able to use the handles on it to lift the basket out with your remaining items.

squoosh · 15/04/2015 16:50

Oh that's the kind of tip that will win you £20 in Take A Break magazine Wink

wol1968 · 15/04/2015 16:54

Have any of you ever noticed when you're in a fast-moving bar crush-type crowd that EVERYONE chooses you to push past? It's like they look and see a gap in the crowd and you don't really exist. Angry

OTOH, I used to be really good at the short person's 'head down, line up shoulders and push' manoeuvre to get through rush-hour crowds when commuting. Again, they don't see you doing it. Wink

Allofaflumble · 15/04/2015 18:28

Being teased by someone with Bugs Bunny buck teeth about how short I am!

Great thread and very amusing. A 4.11.5 here. My last partner said he didn't want his ex wife to meet me as she would say I was too short. That made me feel two feet tall! Wink

kent43 · 15/04/2015 18:37

They think only slim people are short as petite ranges have limited sizes.. Even in normal ranges larger sizes are longer.

kent43 · 15/04/2015 18:39

O and trying to push trolley with infant carrier cradle.
