Short people problems!

Why oh why do almost every clothes shop put short length jeans on the top shelf/hangers? Where's the sense in that?! Confused

What other short people problems really annoy you?

I agree with everything on here. The only thing i can think of that hasn't been mentioned is breastfeeding an older baby/toddler. I only realised this when i went to a LLL toddler meeting and saw taller women breastfeeding older babies / toddlers and they looked so much more comfortable!

Flufflewuffle · 16/04/2015 12:46

There isn't one thing mentioned on this thread I don't agree with. Including being patted on the head and being used a beer rest. Once. Grin I'm 4'10" with feet that are somewhere between a 2 and a 3. And not a 2.5. What is with that?? I am going to be checking out Asos and Duo for small shoes thanks to this thread. But why can't we try these small shoes ON before buying them? Have to order them online then go through the pain of sending them back, and paying postage, if they don't fit. So frustrating. Sigh.

I used to be a gymnast, which is great for short people, and keep myself pretty strong at gym. I've got a lot of muscle as I do a lot of body weight training like pull ups, tricep dips and push ups. But enough body fat to hide all the muscle unless it's actually under stress. So I just end up looking chunky with a really broad back and shoulders with short arms Wow, SO easy to shop for...

I'm short and a size 8. Used to be a 6 and then kids happened. But even as an 8, which in theory is a great size, right, I look boxy. Square. Chunky. I'm guessing it's the broad back.
I can just never get myself to look elegant. And Raah, I am so with you. I get absolutely miserable trying to shop for clothes. I can go in and out with 50 items and come home with nothing. Nothing fits. Grrr.

But honestly that's the biggest issue I have with being short. Oh, and being at armpit level on the tube...boak! I have no issue with hopping up on my kitchen counters to get to the top shelves and climbing up onto the window sills and counters to get the windows open and closed. Thankfully I can drive most cars, except the really old and cheap ones as their seats don't go up and down...so an original Mini is out, which broke my heart as an 18 year old... Wink

It's a bit embarrassing climbing on my seat in aeroplanes and trains to use the overhead storage, but hey ho, that's life. And I stand on the bottom shelves in the shops to get to the top shelf. Mostly I manage.

Oh and I got mistaken from my (6'1") husband's daughter recently, but only from behind. Also partly due to the bright pink, age 12-13, coat I was wearing...LOL! Too funny!

ROFL OneTwoManyLots, about the bogey alert and being able to see up people's noses. I am SO going to use that.

I also find I have to go into self defense mode in full clubs and pubs. I put one or both hands up, shielding my face at a short distance, when moving through a crowd. Just to prevent stray elbows. It's worked several times.

It would be weird if I was 5'2 and had giant clown feet, wouldn't it?

Weirdly this was the case with my friend's mum Anotheronebitthedust.

My best friend at school was 5ft 10ins at 17 and had size 9 feet. She had a terrible time getting fashionable shoes. There used to be a high street shoe shop called Lilley and Skinner that did them but she'd have to rush there at the start of every season or they'd be sold out. It must be different now. That size is probably common.

But at least she was in proportion. Her mum was 5ft and had the same size feet. I think she was the inspiration for Sideshow Bob in the Simpsons.

My friend's dad was only about 5ft 6ins. I think she must have been a changeling.

HighwayDragon · 16/04/2015 12:51

When you're trying to reprimand a year 5 child and they're taller than you...

limitedperiodonly · 16/04/2015 13:00

Are you a teacher HighwayDragon? I'm not, so it's just a suggestion but it seemed to work for short-arsed teachers when I was at school.

If in the classroom, don't go over to them. Call them to your desk and remain seated while they stand in front of the class.

In the playground or corridor I'd advise a See Me at the Staff Common Room and then leave them knocking and waiting for the entirety of lunchtime break.

ChaiseLounger · 16/04/2015 13:02

Agree with everything. Am only 5'1'' and can't reach any kitchen cupboards.

HighwayDragon · 16/04/2015 14:14

I'm a TA limited in year 4, the year 5s regularly mess around in the corridor where I'm working with a pupil Hmm

limitedperiodonly · 16/04/2015 14:58

Oh dear HighwayDragon. We had a very scary female chemistry teacher who was barely 5ft and looked like The Great Gonzo from The Muppets.

You wouldn't have called her that to her face, even if it had been at eye level.

fragrancemeister · 18/04/2015 15:42

getting clothes to fit is a nightmare, sleeves miles to long ,waists sitting on your hips cos the body is too long, then ,concequently the "waist" is too tight, you never get trousers that are the right length.I also end up climbing up supermarket shelves for "stuff" or asking an assistant to get it down for me and being patronised. There is one upside though,at festivals and carnivals nobody minds you standing in front of them

phlebasconsidered · 18/04/2015 16:12

My whiteboards at school are designed for giants. I have a year six child write the date.

spanieleyes · 18/04/2015 16:25

Me tooBlush
Many of my year 6 pupils are taller than me!

FuzzyWizard · 18/04/2015 16:47

Another teacher tired of all the whiteboards being up too high. It means I only really use the bottom half. Most of the teenagers I teach tower over me but that doesn't really bother me.

Went on a residential once to a PGL centre and queuing up for dinner one evening a teacher from another school (primary) came up behind me, took me by the shoulders, moved me to one side and said loudly "excuse me poppet!". My colleagues almost wet themselves laughing but the woman didn't even notice I wasnt a small child. BlushAngry

Oh, yes yes yes to the mirror and cupboard issues with a tall other half! I gave up on driving when pregnant as there was no way I could reach the pedals without having my bump far too close to the steering wheel.

I've got used to taking up my own trousers and sleeves (wundaweb is brilliant) and feel I'm better off than tall people as there's often not enough fabric to adjust sizes to fit them. After years of feeling I should wear heels I have given up as I'd rather be able to keep up with tall people and be comfortable.

As for slings, I find it works with my 8mo if I use woven wraps or carriers designed to have the knees higher than the bum, so I only have to accommodate his head and torso along my torso which is more manageable even with my rapidly lengthening DS - anything where the legs dangle down is a nuisance now!

limitedperiodonly · 18/04/2015 17:46

My sister is 5ft. She went to work leaving her DH building a brick breakfast bar/work station in their kitchen. When she came home it looked great except it came up to her chest. She had to stand on a stool to prepare anything.

I am the Amazon of the family at 5ft 4ins.

TheMustard · 18/04/2015 17:59

Also a teacher, can't reach the top of my whiteboard! I have a funky little fold-out footstool I use if I need to reach the top. Sixth form call it my, "Stool of Humiliation, Miss." But then they also help me put up new displays where I can't reach, so I'll let them off.

TheMustard · 18/04/2015 18:01

Also, my fiancé is six foot seven... Our wedding pictures are going to be interesting. Maybe we'll try to have them taken on a staircase somewhere...

Molecule · 18/04/2015 19:29

I agree with all of these, and use a deep ladle for closing windows. My hands are small so I struggle with large diameter jars, just can't get the grip, but also with garden secateurs; a challenging thick stem takes two hands to get the things to close. And of course, gardening gloves are never small enough.

FuzzyWizard · 18/04/2015 19:30

Empress... I was so shocked I said nothing. She sort of strode off to her group and I was just left there gaping.

GiantGaspingSatanicCyst · 18/04/2015 20:11

limited I am the same height as you and am taller than my dad Grin

iklboo · 18/04/2015 20:18

I'm 5ft. DH sometimes rearranges the kitchen cupboards to be 'helpful'. I can never bloody reach anything when he's done it.
