To wonder what 'normal' people eat...?

Just that really.

I have problems with food...it's very much feast or famine and nothing much in between. So if you're 'normal', what does a days food look like?

Depends entirely on where I am and what I am doing.
On a typical working day I probably won't eat breakfast, but I do have a mug of cafe au lait (often in the office), if I am feeling hungry I can get either scrambled eggs or a small rye roll with salami from the canteen, or fruit salad, depends on how hungry I am (or not) and whether I have meetings over lunchtime, which happens at least once a week.
Lunch is a small bowl of soup and a small bowl of salad.
Supper could be anything from nothing at all to an apple or a banana to Indian/Thai/Italian/Sushi/French/German/Swiss, again depending on where I am.
At home I will always have coffee and lunch is usually salad or a baked potato and vegetables. Supper is, again, dependent on what I am up to, but is quite often nothing or fruit. I don't actually like to eat a big meal in the evenings unless out or it's a special occasion.
I don't snack or eat cake or biscuits. I cook all my own food from scratch and never buy ready meals. The only tins I have are tuna and sometimes chickpeas. I hate throwing food away, but it does happen sometimes, when I have stocked up and then am away for work.
Much as I love my food and wine, my days do not revolve around eating.
I don't eat much meat (not worth buying for 1 person and I am not keen on the taste or texture) but I try to have fish once a week.
Apart from the one mug of coffee I always drink at least 2l of mineral water a day.
I don't have a sweet tooth and detest chocolate.

All the thin people I know don't really think about food, eat a little bit of everything and drink water or the odd full fat soft drink. The fat people think about food all the time, eat whole packets of biscuits or massive platefuls and drink diet coke!!

ButterflyOfFreedom · 06/04/2015 17:26

Not really sure what 'normal' might be but on a typical day I eat:

Breakfast: bran flakes
Lunch: boiled eggs & soldiers
Dinner: spaghetti bolognese

Snacks: apple, brunch bar, bit of chocolate

Drinks: 4 x tea, orange juice, water

Pengweng · 06/04/2015 17:28

Lunch: Salad/omelette/leftovers/soup
Dinner: Chicken/Fish/Meat with salad/veggies and depending on how hungry sometimes i add potatoes.

Lots and lots of coffee

No processed foods, very little dairy and rarely carbs or alcohol.

SomewhereIBelong · 06/04/2015 17:35

breakfast one of porridge and fruit; alpen and banana; 2 slices of toast with a poached egg

lunch - sandwich -meat and salad, or a prawn salad, or cheese on toast or a bagel with "stuff" on it.

dinner - many and varied, tonight poached white fish with garlicky potato wedges and green beans

no snacks - did without for March for a charity thing and lost so much weight it is amazing - so am keeping it up.

fatlazymummy · 06/04/2015 17:44

I'm a bit poorly at the moment ,so I'm not really eating properly, but on a good day my meal plans would be something like -
Breakfast - porridge. Made with semi skimmed milk, mixed dried fruit and cinammon
Lunch - a sandwich, made with wholemeal bread, cheese or houmous and a bit of salad
Dinner - something vegetarian, eg vegetarian chilli, a cheese omelette with peas and tinned tomatoes, lentil and veg curry.
In addition I will have a few snacks - yoghurt, fruit, nuts , maybe a few biscuits. This is where I struggle to maintain self control.

rosy71 · 06/04/2015 17:50

Today I have had/will have:
breakfast: 2 slices of toast with jam, cup of tea
lunch: carrot & butternut squash soup, hazelnut yoghurt, orange, orange juice
afternoon: hot cross bun, lemonade, cup of tea
tea will be using up things from the freezer as we're having a delivery tomorrow so probably potato waffles, Linda McCartney sausages & veg. Probably a cherry bakewell too. Orange juice.

fatlazymummy · 06/04/2015 18:22

I see someone mentioned using smaller plates, to help with portion control . I do that, as well.
I also find it helpful sometimes to plan my meal plans out for the next day, write it down and eat exactly what it says on the list. I don't count calories or carbs or fat myself, but if you do I would think that would be even better - you know all your nutritional needs will be met over the next 24 hours.

Fruityb · 06/04/2015 18:25

Generally coffee for breakfast and a couple of Babybels, both when I get to work. Snack on fruit, lunch will be a mug shot and some fruit and a yogurt. Tea is generally meat and veg of some description, mince and mash or salmon and veg. I tend to cook from scratch, we will have spag bol or chilli at some point as well.

I'm a grazer so am usually snacking through the day, so try to have grapes or some such nearby.

louwn · 06/04/2015 18:44

Porridge for breakfast (odd sausage sarnie at work canteen sometimes, sometimes have pancakes or eggs benedict or something like that at the weekend)
Soup, salad or sandwich/wrap for lunch
Dinner varies loads, tonight is cooked cold chicken, leftover homemade tomato sauce from a dish we ate yesterday and some day old sourdough made into croutons.
Tonnes of snacks - cereal bars, fruit, nuts, chocolate... on work days especially I quite often at work have 3 snacks between breakfast and lunch! Or two breakfasts....
I am trying to be a bit healthier at the moment as going on holiday in a few weeks.

Amummyatlast · 06/04/2015 18:51

Today was:

Breakfast - ready brek made with semi milk and half a banana
2nd breakfast - toasted English muffin with butter
Lunch - Turkey and mushroom pie, with broccoli, carrots, baby sweetcorn and new potatoes. Apple crumble and custard.
Snacks - 3x plain biscuits, 4x small chocolates
Dinner - will be pizza

Namechangergamechanger · 06/04/2015 19:11

Today was: two slices fruit toast with butter for breakfast.
Mushrooms and egg on toasted bread for lunch.
Few crisps
Banana
Will be having spag bol in a bit, followed by fruit and some Easter eggs.

Pretty standard weekend day for me.

BsshBosh · 06/04/2015 19:13

But what's "normal"? What are you trying to achieve? Lose weight, feel healthier or simply gauging how you eat compared to others?

I eat according to hunger and what I fancy. Today that meant Japanese rice crackers for breakfast, burger and chips and milkshake out for lunch, squash soup and bread for dinner; loads of water and a few glasses of blood orange juice.

Yesterday it was buttered hot cross buns for breakfast then roast lamb and loads of veg for Easter lunch then cheese, crackers and fruit for dinner. I few chocs in between.

Albadross · 06/04/2015 20:07

What's the context?

TalkinPeace · 06/04/2015 20:08

Agree with Bssh
Normal depends on height, weight, age, activity level etc etc

Generally slimmer fitter people eat more veg and have smaller portions than larger people
but it varies so much depending on background and culture and work life balance

workadurka · 06/04/2015 20:14

Not sure how normal I am - I eat a lot but a similar amount most days. I'm not overweight but feel a bit flabby (not enough exercise). Today I've eaten:

Big bowl of porridge with some fruit and honey

Banana and peanut butter homemade milkshake

Little homemade puff pastry "pizza" with spinach, olives, tomato and cheese plus homemade coleslaw

Veggie sausages with roast parsnips, carrots, mashed potatoes, broccoli and small Yorkshire pud

2 oatcake biscuits

Small chocolate egg

Water to drink

OnewayoranotherIwill · 06/04/2015 21:46

breakfast - porridge/weetabix topped with nuts, cup of tea
lunch - wrap/salad/sandwich/soup and fruit, water, tea
dinner - fish/white meat and plenty of veg or a pasta dish like bolognaise with extra veg followed by fruit and yogurt, herbal tea.
usually cake or chocolate bar after lunch or dinner

Some days I eat more than others however I do eat decent portions and I rarely snack unless I have a early dinner. I am not overweight, my downfall is a glass or 2 of wine in the evening.

SaltyandSweet · 06/04/2015 22:38

Breakfast - 2 mugs of strong sweet coffee, 1 slice of toast with a scraping of peanut butter
Lunch - 3 slices of bread with butter, a banana, half an apple
Dinner - Tuna salad sandwich with a small side salad

This is a pretty horrendous sampling, we have some naice bread in and I have had no willpower to resist it. Carbs are normally limited as I gain weight very easily when I eat carbs at all three meals.Normally eat better with a better dinner, a good breakfast and a fruity or salad-y lunch. Am currently trying to lose weight, I stopped smoking 4 months ago and have gained ALOT, so will go back to a no carb lunch and low carb breakfast (eat what I want at dinner within reason). I find I know how to lose weight for my body, it's the putting it into practice that's hard!

bonniebear · 07/04/2015 06:42

I am 8 stone 6 and losing weight. I eat whatever kind of food I want. I have never been in to fruit and veg really, and eat it rarely. I can't sit still, and I walk a lot. I probably eat way too much junk food, but I always have done. I hate diet drinks or low fat as they always taste weird, especially spread and diet coke. Bleurgh

Justyouwaitandsee · 07/04/2015 07:02

On a work day I don't eat before I leave home but often will pick something up on the way to the office eg. a cream cheese bagel, smoked salmon and scrambled egg baguette or sometimes a pastry preferably with a fresh orange juice and a cup of tea.

Lunch is sandwich, crisps and water or occasionally sushi or a jacket potato with coleslaw.

Dinner varies - spag bol, chilli, jacket potatoes, cottage pie, pasta, pizza, wraps, chicken or salmon baked in the oven. Most midweek meals are served with lots of salad. After dinner I will have a yoghurt and fruit.

When at home, breakfast will be a bowl of Special K, porridge or two slices of toast (with butter, dairylea or marmite).

Lunch is usually homemade veg soup (carrot /parsnip /cauliflower /broccoli), tinned mackerel and salad or sometimes a toasted sandwich.

Dinner will be the same as above (apart from nights when we eat out or grab a takeaway). I don't keep a stock of biscuits / crisps etc (although I guess this will change as our DC grow up) so most snack options are healthy unless we can be bothered to go out and get something. I tend to keep come packets of microwave popcorn as a treat.

MummyLuce · 07/04/2015 18:00

Breakfast: Bowl of shredded wheat
Lunch: half a salmon and cream cheese sandwich
Snack: bit of Easter egg
Dinner: couple of sausages, mash, broccoli, a pear, few jelly beans
Drinks: low cal squash, water, tea, coffee.
Exercise:4 mile walk.

I'm about 8stone 10lbs and 5"3....

Tbh, I wouldnT overthink food! Just keep busy and get some fruit and veg in!

Albadross · 07/04/2015 18:45

I have a cafetière of black coffee (made with two heaped tablespoons of strong coffee) for breakfast

If I'm at work I have a veggie only salad and water, or at home I'll usually have a bowl of wheat flakes with coconut milk

Snacks maybe beef jerky, Ryvita Crackerbread (cheese flavoured), an apple, a packet of any healthy eating crispbread type things

Dinner is a bowl of veggies in sauce (tomato based) and maybe 3 measures of vodka with slimline tonic.

I am aware I should have booze-free days, but I have a chronic pain condition so it's nice not to feel at the end of a day Confused
