Tried to take out my Coil!

whatswrongnow · 28/03/2015 20:27

So ive a mirena coil in and we have been taking about having another child. I had a look on the internet today and lots of women seem to have just pulled their own out. I decided to give it a try. Not so good tried twice and now it feels like a tampon is in the wrong place and there was some ,tiny bit of blood. any advice would be welcome or anyone who has done it, thanks.

In fairness to the Op....one of the problems is that people post on youtube (youtube?!?!?) or other websites about how easily it worked for them. Most people who try it, fail, and end up in bother, tend not to tell the world. So only the people for whom it works post, so anyone googling thinks it always works.

So well done for coming online and telling people it didn't work. You never know, maybe finding this thread will stop someone else blindly yanking on their threads.

Happyringo · 29/03/2015 06:04

Removing a coil is actually usually a quick and easy procedure for most people. (I say that as a sexual health nurse) but that's with the added benefit of a speculum, visualising the cervix, locating the strings, and pulling with an instrument, not generally trying to grasp slippery strings with slippery fingers!

The OP has had a hard time on here - yes it was a stupid thing to do but it's done now and am sure she's learned her lesson! Clinic next time OP!

My legs just snapped together like a Venus fly trap.

Annabannbobanna · 29/03/2015 07:25

Well that's a reassuring post for all the would-be diy-ers applesnapple. I think you should just go to the doctors OP.

Koalafications · 29/03/2015 09:01

There are YouTube videos of people taking out coils? Like instructional ones?

Fluffycloudland77 · 29/03/2015 09:10

Go to A&E, you won't be the first person to do this & people do a lot worse.

One of my relatives gets called in to repair diy circumcisions.

BlueCheeseandChocolate · 29/03/2015 09:22

fluffy Shock

OP I hope you are OK today. Don't worry about going to the doctors, I'm sure they'll sort you out quickly.

itsnotmeitsyou1 · 29/03/2015 10:02

OP, please go to the doctor. You've been a bit stupid, however I've done something similar myself (not with a coil, but still required a shamefaced doctor visit). Don't risk your sexual health and possibly fertility by messing with things like that.

littlejohnnydory · 29/03/2015 10:08

My GP told me I could remove one myself!

Happyringo Now, this is clearly not the place to be sensible and give factual information, is it? We're meant to be roasting the OP and clutching our fanjos pearls at the very thought! Wink Grin

Hope you're ok this morning, OP and that you aren't sore!

SomethingOnce · 29/03/2015 12:08

As if the OP wasn't bad enough, now I learn people attempt DIY circumcisions Shock

OMFG, noooooooooo!

maggiethemagpie · 30/03/2015 21:07

My mirena came out psychosomatically. I was told by my doctor I could conceive after putting it on hold due to medical issues. 3 days later it fell out. All by itself. I didn't touch it. Weird. My body must have expelled it as I was so happy to finally get the all-clear to TTC.

I wouldn't try and take it out myself though. That's just dumb.

snowglobemouse · 31/03/2015 06:19

My cousin is a consultant at A&E and she cracked me up when she said someone came in the other night because she had "lost" something in her err private parts.

hilarious. and so professional

sashh · 31/03/2015 07:36

How did I miss until today.

Things I have learned not to do from MN

  1. remove own coil
  2. try to bleach own bum hole
  3. google dragon butter
whatswrongnow · 31/03/2015 16:09

DIY gynaecology never ends well.....

kelda · 31/03/2015 16:29

Well at least it's out now! Glad you saw the GP.

ladyrosy · 31/03/2015 16:37

Glad to hear it is safely out and you're on the way to recovery now.

Some folk may want to clamp their knees before reading what else I have written.

About 10 years ago, I accidentally removed my copper coil while removing a tampon. I had only had it a few months, and it came out quite easily. I think the strings got caught on the tampon itself. I can't remember what I did regarding medical treatment (I am certain I was in shock at the time), but I do remember having to ask my line manager if I could go home from work as this had happened during my afternoon break. I told her the reason why - I am rubbish at lying, and like I say, I was in shock. For your future reference, if you ever want an ironclad reason to be let out of work immediately, this is it.

I had that coil replaced with a shorter length one, which the doctor thought would be less likely to be accidentally removed. The strings were cut short so tampon tangles would not happen again. I did not pull it out accidentally (you've never known anyone be so careful with tampon removal!) so success there.

Fast forward 5 years when it was time to change the coil, and the strings were too short to remove it despite the horrible hook devices that the doctor used then showed to me with my own blood on so I had to be referred to the city clinic. I had to have local anaesthetic injected into my lady places including my cervix, so it could be opened up enough for the removal.

That evening was spent very quietly on my sofa.

Aaaand I had another copper coil put in place. Strings were the right length this time I am the goldilocks of coils and it was fine until I opted to have it removed last year to try to conceive. No problems this time. Hurrah! And I am now 38 weeks pregnant.

And can you believe I am considering copper coil as my method of contraception after little one is born???

You can only imagine how much I don't get on with hormonal contraception for copper coil to be my preferred choice!

DaygloYellowLady · 31/03/2015 16:56

An other sexual health nurse here. Glad you're ok OP, alls well that ends well.
It is true that most coils slip out like they are greased with butter and the patient feels pretty much nothing at all.
However, as the OP's cautionary tale tells us it can be pretty sore if it gets stuck in the cervix so I think on balance I would advise against trying this at home.

RachelWatts · 31/03/2015 17:15

Ouch! I think I just felt mine move in sympathy!

ilovesprouts · 31/03/2015 17:18

i pulled mine out bled tons id never do it again,

TheFirstOfHerName · 31/03/2015 17:21

Well done for getting it sorted, OP.

Hopefully by sharing this you may be saving other would-be-DIYers to a similar fate.

TheFirstOfHerName · 31/03/2015 17:24

ladyrosy you have my sympathies, but Grin at the goldilocks analogy.
