Tried to take out my Coil!

whatswrongnow · 28/03/2015 20:27

So ive a mirena coil in and we have been taking about having another child. I had a look on the internet today and lots of women seem to have just pulled their own out. I decided to give it a try. Not so good tried twice and now it feels like a tampon is in the wrong place and there was some ,tiny bit of blood. any advice would be welcome or anyone who has done it, thanks.

You're pulling a metal object through your cervix, actually forcing it through, that's why so many people are horrified! I guess some cervixes are more open than others (due to previous number of babies) but it's still not something I'd do! Actually I'd never have a coil, they give me the heebie jeebies.

whatswrongnow · 28/03/2015 20:47

ah thanks for the advice. I'm not great with doctors or hospitals, i left 12 hrs after i has dd so this seemed like a good compromise. The ladies on youtube just pulled them out and seemed grand afterwards, feel a bit of a fool now.

Koalafications I'm just guessing that's how it happened Grin

I was actually in the bath and as I washed myself below, I could feel something sharpish inside.

Further investigation by DH produced a coil Blush

OMG, there are YouTube how-to videos? Shock

gamerchick · 28/03/2015 20:48

I think it probably it depends on where you are in your cycle. Obviously the cervix is more favorable when you're on your period.

You don't want to damage your cervix if you're planning on more sprogs. Go and get it sorted.

Fluffyears · 28/03/2015 20:48

I could never have one just the thought of it makes me feel queasy. Those who pulled their own out good for you but this case proves why it should be done by a professional as it can go wrong in amateur hands.

Yarp · 28/03/2015 20:48

Sorry I was a bit dramatic, OP

Purplepoodle · 28/03/2015 20:49

Yikes. Mine was uncomfortable to get out. Dr had to give it a really good tug and she said it's all about taking it out at the right angle.

NoRoomForALittleOne · 28/03/2015 20:50

As a PP has said, if you have an object stuck in your cervical canal you can trigger a vasovagal reaction from cervical shock. You will feel light headed, shakey, possibly sick and are very likely to faint. You NEED help if this happens to get it removed ASAP.

DrLego · 28/03/2015 20:50

I hate going to docs or hospital and hate overuse of A&E but on this occasion I would A&E it/ walk in centre/ if all else fails, a definite first thing Monday appointment urgently.

Mrscog · 28/03/2015 20:51

I'm sure you'll be ok, but I would possibly try and get seen at out of hours so you can get it out properly. I think these things depend on how 'wedged in' it gets. Mine slipped out with no pain when my GP did it, but I'd only had it in 18 months, where as someone I know had to get hers removed as a day case as it had 'bedded in' to be able to get it out normally.

DrLego · 28/03/2015 20:52

Yes A&E/ minor injuries unit 24hr opening would be my most recommended course of action. ouch..

Ruhrpott · 28/03/2015 20:53

I had to have mine out with a GA after the doctor failed to get it out twice

londonrach · 28/03/2015 20:56

Anyone else got their legs crossed now. Hope you ok op x

TheFirstOfHerName · 28/03/2015 21:01

I have had a Mirena that spontaneously became dislodged and got stuck in my cervix. It was very unpleasant (dramatic blood loss, pain, dizziness etc). I saw the GP, who sent me to hospital where I had it removed as an emergency.

It had not dawned on me that someone might do this to themselves, but the resulting situation is similar.

Hopefully you haven't injured your uterus/cervix. I hope you are able to get it sorted soon.

expatinscotland · 28/03/2015 21:07

Couldn't TTC have waited till Monday? Do ring 111, you could be at serious risk of infection at the least.

Alisvolatpropiis · 28/03/2015 21:09

They open up like an umbrella when inside you.

I had my coil removed in September...by a nurse who opened my cervix with a speculum. You can't just pull them out like a tampon.

You need to go to A+E, it could seriously damage your cervix.

Charlotte3333 · 28/03/2015 21:14

Both of mine came out by themselves, Dr said my cervix isn't suited to them as DS2 and his gargantuan head ruined it. But they both still hurt like fakery when they came out.

Do you have a local walk-in centre you could go to? Ours is open til 10pm at weekends for non-A&E emergencies. I think you ought to be looked at sooner rather than later. And don't do stuff like this to yourself again.

whatswrongnow · 28/03/2015 21:17

Im in Ireland so no nhs24 or 111. We have caredoc, which is a overworked doc who will say off to A&E or A&E. Might ring caredoc in the morning and ask can they take it out. Otherwise it will be my gp on monday who might just send me to A&E . My gp got someone in to put the coil in so i was afraid they would not be able to take it out.

Keep coming back to this thread to see if the OP has returned.

I had mine out after 10 months of mood swings, NO libido, spots and constant bleeding and it still stung when it was pulled out.

foamybeep · 28/03/2015 21:18

I pulled my merina out myself... I was just constantly bleeding took it out and it stopped. I'm considering taking out my copper coil as I'm sure it's irritating my womb. Im a nurse and all we do is pull the strings. U might not have pulled it far enough could be in your cervix relax and squat give it some gentle pulls.... If no joy go to A&E deny all knowledge of pulling say u think it's expelled itself :-) x

ssd · 28/03/2015 21:22

am sitting on a cushion now and I dont even have a coil....

WigfieldRocks · 28/03/2015 21:28

Confused I had mine taken out in a clinic and it was still bloody awful - something 'bent' on the way out and I ended up in agony for a week afterwards and had to have three return trips to the docs due to excessive pain and bleeding so would definitely never attempt this myself and in your situation I'd be getting myself along to a walk in centre ASAP

whatswrongnow · 28/03/2015 21:28

expatinscotland had all of those for 5 years and weight gain. My hubby will bloody kill me for doing it. Thanks foamybeep sorry for tmi i got all tight while pulling the strings and could figure out how to loosen up .

Eek. My legs just spontaneously clamped shut.
