Tried to take out my Coil!

whatswrongnow · 28/03/2015 20:27

So ive a mirena coil in and we have been taking about having another child. I had a look on the internet today and lots of women seem to have just pulled their own out. I decided to give it a try. Not so good tried twice and now it feels like a tampon is in the wrong place and there was some ,tiny bit of blood. any advice would be welcome or anyone who has done it, thanks.

Oh yes, out of hours GP is a good call. If you phone your GP surgery there should be a recorded message telling you where to call out of hours.

PatrickStarxx · 28/03/2015 20:38

I fainted when the nurse took mine out!
Don't sit down hard and FFs leave your coil alone Shock

SideOrderofChips · 28/03/2015 20:38

What were you thinking? Seriously??

orangepudding · 28/03/2015 20:39

I took my copper coil out, came out very easily.

As you feel discomfort I would go to a minor injuries unit.

Yarp · 28/03/2015 20:39

Good Lord. I am on my 3rd Mirena and the palaver and pain to get them out at the GPs was bad enough

I think you should call whatever-NHS-Direct-is-called now.

Surely the advice to do this yourself is deeply dodgy ?

howtodrainyourflagon · 28/03/2015 20:40

Omg. Just reading your thread title made me clench. What were you thinking?

RoosterCogburnIsInTheJakes · 28/03/2015 20:41

The gynae took mine out and I ended up with a severe pelvic infection - the most painful experience of my life. Ended up in a&e where I fainted because of the pain.
I wouldn't wish that on anyone
Please OP, go to the GP and get it sorted

I've removed my mirena coil myself with no problems. If you can feel the strings just pull very gently and it should slide out. Squatting helps.

I'm unsure why the huge overreaction by mnetters?! Surely all a nurse does is gently pull the strings to remove it?

londonrach · 28/03/2015 20:41

Think you need to see someone tonight in case it gets infection. Do you have ooh or can you ring 111. Please dont sleep on this. Worth getting checking out xxx

Koalafications · 28/03/2015 20:42

WTactualF?

Why why why are you listening to what people do on the Internet?

kelda · 28/03/2015 20:42

Sorry posters are being so harsh on this thread.

No it was not your finest hour but there is no need for name calling. Please don't let the judgements on this thread put you off contacting a doctor.

You do need to contact a doctor. There is a risk of damage including infection, and that's the last thing you need while trying for a baby,

Believe me, doctors will have seen it all before and will not bat an eyelid.

tattychicken · 28/03/2015 20:42

Exactly. I've pulled mine out too, no bother, just like pulling out a tampax.

Yarp · 28/03/2015 20:42

aries - you would think it was just a matter of gently pulling. Mine have both not worked out that way. Terribly painful

WorraLiberty · 28/03/2015 20:42

I pulled mine out by accident. I think it probably got wrapped around a tampon and came out of place.

Oddly enough, I was already booked in for a coil change we week or so later, so I turned up with it wrapped in some tissue - much to the bemusement of my GP.

I would go straight to the Docs on Monday morning. That's if you can put up with the discomfort over the weekend.

WestEast · 28/03/2015 20:42

Ooh my fanny just twitched something awful reading that

Koalafications · 28/03/2015 20:43

Sorry posted too quickly, I meant with regards to performing medical procedures on yourself, of course...

TweedAddict · 28/03/2015 20:44

Get your partner to do it, with you laying down, you will be in better position then

southeastastra · 28/03/2015 20:44

just like pulling out a tampax? i felt a real burn sensation when mine was taken out, it's def not as simple as pulling out a tampon.

mamadoc · 28/03/2015 20:44

But it is NOT like pulling out a tampon.
It is not in your vagina it is inside your womb
That really, really is a lot different

Koalafications · 28/03/2015 20:45

I pulled mine out by accident. I think it probably got wrapped around a tampon and came out of place.

I actually clenched at the thought of that [shudder]

Yarp · 28/03/2015 20:45

mamadoc

Yes

GuiltyAsAGirlCanBe · 28/03/2015 20:45

Actually I have read threads on here before where women have done it themselves.

I am a dr and I wouldn't be allowed to take one out without specific training.

But to be fair to the op whenever I have them being taken out it has been a simple procedure and they literally just pull them out quite easily, and they are smaller than you'd think. That is with the benefit of a speculum though.

It was not really the best idea and I wouldn't advise it, but I think we should give the op a break. And try not to panic op as I doubt you will have done any lasting damage. Unless there is excessive pain or bleeding, I would suggest arranging getting it out by someone trained on Monday. Either at fp clinic or gp.

WorraLiberty · 28/03/2015 20:45

Actually thinking about it now, the PP's who suggested medical attention sooner in case of infection are probably right.

Yours hasn't come out, it's come out of place and might be holding your cervix open, risking a nasty infection.

trice · 28/03/2015 20:46

Mine more or less fell out when I pulled. Obviously cervixes differ.
