How many sheds is reasonable?

HookedOnHooking · 23/03/2015 13:32

Do you have more than one?

I mean, if you live in an average 3 bed semi, not a stately home with park where you might reasonably need a potting shed.

Also, does it make a difference if you don't have a garage to keep bicycles in?

I don't know but when I was viewing houses I did see a house with 18 sheds in the garden Grin

Bog standard house too - was a semi with a 180 foot garden - more than half was shed

BestZebbie · 23/03/2015 13:38

It depends what you do in them.
If you have a garden and use it then you probably need one for gardening tools/lawnmower/fence paint etc, and to keep bikes and patio furniture etc in.
If you have any other hobbies that are awkward to do in the house then you probably also need another reasonably sized shed, as the first one will be full of all that stuff and you'll need to be able to move around and have a worksurface and a place to put your equipment etc.
If you have a tiny house with no storage you may need a shed to put overflow items (bulky occasional use stuff like a cat carrying basket, beach toys/xmas tree etc) in, although this one starts to get a bit 'hoarders' quite fast so may be unreasonable.

In conclusion I think 'unreasonable' only kicks in at shed 3 or 4.

NeedABumChange · 23/03/2015 13:41

3 sheds is just about acceptable, I think, if they are organised not just all crammed with junk.
One for gardening stuff.
One for big sports stuff-bike, canoe, skis etc.
One for random crap, tools maybe

We have 2. Big one is garden stuff- chairs, soil, garden tools. The other is tools, DIY stuff, car stuff, smells of turps.

scrivette · 23/03/2015 13:42

We currently have two sheds, one is about to fall down so we are going to pull it down and replace it with two more. Our garden is quite private though and can only be seen from the neighbours upstairs windows as we all have high fences.

butterfly2015 · 23/03/2015 13:43

We have two but could do with an extra one. We have so much stuff out there (and we are only in a little cottage) bikes, scooters, decorating stuff, car stuff, gardening stuff, cat boxes, General tools....Just so much bloody stuff. But it's all used (when we can fight through all the crap).

Oh wants a man cave. I want him to have one too so he moves all the stuff off our dining table.

bachsingingmum · 23/03/2015 14:20

There was a question on GQT about this yesterday. The answer was S+1 where S is the number you already have. They asked the audience. No-one had more than 5....

I've 1.

HookedOnHooking · 23/03/2015 14:24

Bollox.

We have just one. H wants another. I think nobody should have more than one.

But my beloved bicycle takes up most of current shed so I see his point.

But where is space for shed 2 I have earmarked for my future bee house.

Dilemas and decisions.....

I was confidently informed only yesterday that the answer to how many sheds you need is always s+1. S being the number of sheds you have.

londonrach · 23/03/2015 14:27

Lol. Parents have 3 at mo but have had 4. You never know about the 4 as hidden. Shed wars where they used to live when ndn got a bigger man shed. My df has a shed with lighting and heating!

SomewhereIBelong · 23/03/2015 14:29

we have a garage... no shed needed.

mousmous · 23/03/2015 14:29

we have 2. but one is a wendy house for the dc.

Viviennemary · 23/03/2015 14:31

One shed is absolutely enough for anybody. But I suppose if it was a largish garden two would be OK.

toptomatoes · 23/03/2015 14:34

We have 2, one has tools and garden stuff in, one has all the kids garden toys in. We also have one of those big plastic boxes with the lawnmower in. They all need about half the stuff chucking out so really one would be sufficient!

Sheitgeist · 23/03/2015 14:37

I have big garage with fitted units and a lovely view, but still complain to DH about lack of shed!
Three would be good: gardening stuff, bikes, and tools.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 23/03/2015 14:39

Two - one for 4 x bicycles, one for other crap including 1 adult and 1 child's bicycle. Each one is about 4 ft deep and 2 m's long?

If you've only got one bike then it's either a tiny shed or organised badly/too much stuff within.

Could you put a bigger shed in place of your current one or organise it differently?

irretating · 23/03/2015 14:40

1 and we also have an outhouse. DH would like another to store his Very Important Man Things, but I'm resistant to the idea as it would take up too much space in the garden. Maybe when the kids have outgrown the climbing frame.

AliceMcGee · 23/03/2015 14:47

we have got 3 - a big one 12x8, 2 smaller ones about 6x5 and a greenhouse which is used as a shed, but I am going to buy another shed to empty the greenhouse into.
We have no garage now (had it converted) no loft(had it converted) and so we need sheds!

ShedWidow · 23/03/2015 14:50

I can't believe I've had to name change for this, but I'd be easily outed otherwise!

We have a fairly large garden (just under 1/2 acre in total I think) and my husband has a bit of a shed addiction. So we currently have:

Main shed: tools, running machine, horsey paraphernalia and tack, camping gear, kindling wood, cat carrier, two adult bikes and some of DH's model aircraft stuff, sheep food
Metal shed: ride on mower, quad bike, hay, gardening and decorating stuff
Bin shed: Two bins, recycling boxes, some outdoor toys, kids' bikes
Play house: overflow outdoor toys
Field shelter: nothing in it except sheep

DH has designed and built all of the above except the metal shed. We have some stables arriving soon for the field, so a lot of the horse stuff, the hay, the sheep food and the quad bike will be moving there. DH is then tearing down the two main sheds and building a 'grand' shed. He's very excited about it all. I'm just a bit...meh. Don't see the thrill myself, although I'm very excited about the stables so I suppose loving sheds isn't that bizarre.

KneesOfTheBee · 23/03/2015 14:50

We use the garage for storage so don't have a shed.

If we didn't have the garage, it would be like shed mews in the back garden.

LisaMed · 23/03/2015 14:50

I thought it was fifty, as in fifty sheds of grey.

I'll get my coat.

LizzieMint · 23/03/2015 14:50

We're buying a house that currently has two and are planning probably 2 more. Blush big garden though, way more garden-space than house-space.

SteppeAwayFromTheKeyboard · 23/03/2015 15:02

one - all gardening with a small corner for outdoor toys

playhouse (not shed, too short, I can't stand up in it) has some other outdoor toys in it and under it.

garage - bikes, DIY, recycling boxes and (large) tent

attic - rest of camping stuff.

MadBannersAndCopPorn · 23/03/2015 15:06

We have a toy shed, a tools/ lawnmower shed and a garage which we use as an overflow 'loft' (Xmas decorations, deck chairs)
Of course, it depends less on the size of your house and more on the size of your garden. Our gardens quite big so the sheds don't look out of place but if you've got a postage stamp, they may look a but silly. Ours are small sheds too 6x4 I think, not practically bungalows!

WhatismyLife · 23/03/2015 15:07

Small 2 bedroom terraced house here. We've got 3 sheds. X

MadBannersAndCopPorn · 23/03/2015 15:07
