My DB recently got engaged. I just recieved a message from future SIL about their engagement party. On the end it said 'haven't had any present ideas yet'.

Do you give presents at engagement?? Is a wedding present not enough?? What do we buy?? I may be just massively naive. DP and I never recieved nor expected presents when we got engaged, but we got loads of cards which we kept.

Help MN!!

I thought an engagement party was only for posh sorts. With luck, it came along in the season after one's 'coming out' party and it mostly served to make it clear to all you were off the market. Any gifts would be from parents, such as passing down his grandmama's engagement ring to him for his fianceé.

For the rest of us, if such a thing happened, it was a glorified Sunday lunch for both families just because any excuse for a knee's up! Or maybe something done in case of expecting important family members might miss the wedding due to health or military service.
