dd has just turned 9. she's 148 cm, which, as far as I can see is way off the centiles.

her weight is in line with her height.

shoe size is a size 5.

people kept saying she would slow down but she doesn't seem to be, at all.

hands and feet are the same size as mine, she's only a few inches shorter than me, her dad is 6f 4 though.

But i can't help but wonder how big she is going to be, she is lots bigger than her peers.

Is she starting to develop? That and the big feet suggest that she might be having her puberty growth spurt early. My dd was fairly tall as a child - not as tall as your daughter but respectably tall - but she hardly grew after age 11 and her adult height will be around 5'3". Her feet have grown a single continental size (half a UK size) since she was 9. She has a tall father but she has ended up the same height as me.

Some very tall kids end up very tall adults, but not all do, it depends a lot on age at puberty.

shoofly · 20/03/2015 14:34

Watching with interest. DS1 was 9 end December, he is 155 tall - size 3 shoes. He's already taller than his swimming coach, and approaching my height. Shoe size 3 so not too bad. His Dad is about 6'2".

nokidshere · 20/03/2015 14:44

Both my boys were head and shoulders above their peers all the way through secondary school. My eldest grew a huge 8 inches in the summer after he finished yr6 and started yr 7 at 5ft 10. He is predicted to reach 6ft 4.

However Since then he has only grown 3 inches and many of his friends are much taller than him now. The daughter of a friend was just short of 6ft at age 12 but she hasn't grown anymore and, now 14, her friends are growing quite quickly and some are almost as tall as her.

Some children do all their growing young and some do it over a few years in spurts. I'm sure you have nothing to worry about ??

nokidshere · 20/03/2015 14:46
  • all the way through primary school I meant
sqibble · 20/03/2015 14:57

I have two nieces with very tall dads - they are about 5'11" now they're fully grown.

2lol2lol · 20/03/2015 18:00

How tall are you & her other parent?

hackmum · 20/03/2015 18:02

It's too late now, OP, but the thing to do is measure them on their second birthday - if you double that, that's their adult height.

2lol2lol · 20/03/2015 18:04

Crikey, so you're about 5'2" and dad is 6'4"? My parents were almost that & I ended up 5'8". Not overly tall. I wasn't especially tall in school, though.

SillyBub · 20/03/2015 18:22

I was taller than that at her age, I was 5ft 7 when I started High School at 11 and still am now. Yes, I was tall but not freakishly so. My DD was 5 a few days ago and she's 121cm and whilst she is tall, there's a fair few that are taller than her in her year.

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 20/03/2015 18:30

DS1 is 7 and around 150cm. Size 4 feet. He doesn't show any sign of slowing down at the moment but hopefully he won't end up too tall!

I was always tallest in my class at school and it didn't bother me at all.

peltata · 20/03/2015 18:45

Not sure how true this is but old wives tale is tall dads lead to tall daughters tall mums make tall sons

DozyDonut · 20/03/2015 18:54

Both DD's were always taller than their peers but ended up at 5ft 5 and 5ft 6
DS on the other hand, was also always taller than his peers and now at age 17 is 6ft 4
Im 5ft 7 and their dad is 6ft

AlmaMartyr · 20/03/2015 19:05

I was taller than my peers for a long time, was 162cm in Year 6 but have only grown 6cm since then so am a pretty normal 5ft6.

lertgush · 20/03/2015 19:32

My DD has always been off-the-charts tall. She is now 5'11 at 13 and has UK size 9.5 feet.

A couple of years ago everyone told me she may well have stopped growing. She clearly hadn't...

Her dad is 6'4 and I'm 5'7.

Inkspellme · 20/03/2015 20:04

my dd at age 11 had size 8 feet and was about 5 foot 2. she's 17 now - feet went down a size to 7 and she is 5 foot 6 and fully grown. I'm 5 foot nothing and my husband us 6 foot exactly. she ended up exactly in the middle of our heights.

Grantaire · 20/03/2015 20:07

When I met DH, his little sister was 10. She was as tall as me (5ft 3") and had bigger feet (7). She's only 5ft 9" as an adult but does have size 12 feet!

lloydlf33 · 20/03/2015 20:13

My son is just 10 and is 158cm with size 7.5 feet! He's definitely pre pubescent so not had his major growth spurt yet. Dad is 6.2 and I'm 5.7 so not particularly tall. I'm quite concerned he's going to end up too tall.

nokidshere · 20/03/2015 20:15

Peltata I am 5"3 and DH is 6"6 and our boys are predicted to be 6"4 and 6"5 so maybe it is an old wives tale ??

AchyMcAcherson · 20/03/2015 20:23

My dsd is 8, she's 150cm and weighs 8 stone. She has size 5 feet. She's very large

Her dad is 5'10 and her mum is 5'4 so I've no idea where she gets it from. She has little breast buds and a very 'womanly' figure with large hips and a smaller waist, although she has a very big belly.
I think her size is partly that she's just big and partly that she's pretty overweight.
Buying clothes is a nightmare. She's in age 14-15 clothes which aren't available in a lot of places, but if I buy adult clothes in size 12(!!) they fit in the body but are too long and things like neck holes are far too big.
I do worry about where she's going to end up size wise, she is growing upwards fast but outwards faster.
It is a bit worrying, the height thing, but there's not much anyone can do about it I suppose.

RandomMess · 20/03/2015 20:27

Does depend if she's going to stop at 12 or carry on...

Dh sister and mum stopped growing at 11 - they are 5'9 and 5'10 Shock

I grew until my late teens but am still teeny tiny.

Jury is out on how tall the girls will end up. All started off very tall currently, 98th, 40th and 60th centile for height at 12, 11 & 9.

daisyswirl · 20/03/2015 20:29

My daughter is 11 and 165cm in height with size 6 feet. She looks about 14/15 but hasnt gone through puberty yet so not sure how tall shes going to end up! I'm 5ft8 and dh is 6ft1. I think she'll be taller than me though.

LidlMermaid · 20/03/2015 20:31

I measured my very tall 2 year old. If the thing about doubling their height is true, she'll be about 6' as an adult. I'm 5'4 and DP is 6'2.

marriednotdead · 20/03/2015 20:57

I measured DD at two and was told to double her height and expect a 6 footer. She's 5'8".
There's very tall genes on her dad's side, she's one of the shortest females in his family. I'm 5'6" and my mum is slightly taller.

DS is an inch taller than his dad, which pans out perfectly with another calculation method I've long forgotten how to do!

2lol2lol · 20/03/2015 21:23

That doubling their height thing... I think it's age 2.5yo for boys. Anyway, DS is 15yo & already 3 inches taller than what the formula said.

Karoleann · 20/03/2015 21:25

My DS is 8 (9 in May) is 147cm and shoe size 7.

My DH is 6' 6", but I'm only 5'4".

I went through puberty very early and stopped growing at 12, I was very tall as a child. DS is already starting to get greasy hair, and is filling out so I suspect he'll do a similar thing.
