to think the school should supply theses

my son is in year 7 and just told me he needs to go to the shops and get theses supplys for school project. tin foil, lolly sticks, bamboo or strawers. it does not sound like much i know. but i really dont want to spend sunday hunting down lolly sticks and i thought schools were meant to supply theses things.

Depends what it's for - if he's making something of his choice then the school might not have them in. Fwiw school teachers often buy craft stuff from their own pockets - I've spent many a sunday scouring shops for crepe paper / glue sticks etc. Works both ways - teachers can't always provide.

YABU SS Art depts. are woefully underfunded. My best friend teaches in a state secondary and has a budget of about £4 per child for the year.

formerbabe · 18/03/2015 19:42

Buy a box of cheapo ice Lolly's...and eat them obviously. You don't need to spend any time hunting them down.

LIZS · 18/03/2015 19:43

The works would have them.

MangoJuggler · 18/03/2015 19:44

Our secondary age children have had to bring in stuff like collage materials (lentils beads string) and make mood boards say collecting blues (ribbon, fabric scraps, wallpaper border bit, lavender seeds) in the past

Bit of a pest but y'know, do-able

Holepunch · 18/03/2015 19:44

I'm not sure what the answer is on the costs, but Ebay is my go to for all these off the wall materials requests. You can usually have things within a day or two without leaving the house.

ghostspirit · 18/03/2015 19:45

never thought of that former .... i just thought if its apart of the curriclium it was meant to be supplyed by the school.

No I wouldn't expect the school to supply things like that.

Things for projects or that they make ie cookery, I think it's reasonable to ask for materials to be brought in. I'm usually on the hunt for bits of card, fabric for textiles, strange fruit to draw etc.

ChocolateCherry · 18/03/2015 19:47

Dd has sacrificed my nice gold Christmas tablecloth for her textiles GCSE. I gritted my teeth on that one...all for a good cause I suppose

Littlemonstersrule · 18/03/2015 19:47

We pay an amount each year for art and design so its covered through that. Others do it the same way as your sons school and parents do the shopping. Schools have limited budgets so parents do need to contribute for their child.

ghostspirit · 18/03/2015 19:49

not been given much notice really so ebay is no good. im hoping son can get theses things himself not sure though. im pregnant and very tired and have quite alot of pain after being at work all week im not willing to go into town and walk about in pain for the above. if son can do it on his own ok. but im not doing it.

ghostspirit · 18/03/2015 19:51

ha guess i have been lucky not to have been asked anything since september then Grin

It's Wednesday now, you said you'd be shopping Sunday, so presumably don't need it until after the weekend. You've got loads of time

Littlemonstersrule · 18/03/2015 19:53

I think you need to find a next day delivery, it's unfair on a 11/12 year old child to be penalised if he doesnt take the items in. It's part of being a parent, we have to carry regardless of being unwell.

ghostspirit · 18/03/2015 19:57

holepunch im at work time i finish work i can bearly walk im in to much pain. saturday is my other sons birthday so will be seeing to him. in general i dont think its much notice at all to be honest.

no harm is trying little if not maybe i could ask my 17 year old to take him to get the stuff.

OP posts:
ChocolateCherry · 18/03/2015 20:00

Those things don't sound too hard to get. Please help him op. It is a pain but being unequipped and not being able to join in is quite a big deal at this age.

ghostspirit · 18/03/2015 20:03

choc i know.. thats why i added about getting his older sister to help him get the items if i cant. might be able to get them from wilko :/

iklboo · 18/03/2015 20:05

Poundland have loads of craft stuff in if you have one near you. We've fully stocked DS with practically everything we think he might need for the rest of the year.

WhyNotSmile · 18/03/2015 20:05

You should be able to find them on EBay with time to get them delivered by Saturday if you look tonight. Can you contact any of the other patents and see whether you could t team up with them to get a bulk-buy discount, or at least save on postage?

Holepunch · 18/03/2015 20:05

Exactly, that's why you order it on Ebay now. Confused

I feel sorry for your 11yo TBH. You're too busy/preoccupied with your pregnancy and your other son to make the effort to get a few basics he needs for school?

I got lolly sticks in Wilko last week. Lakeland also have them but more expensive.

Having said that I remember seeing a thread on here once and the regulations state that if it part of the curriculum they can't be excluded if they don't bring them in. But if not enough children do then they won't be able to do it. But agree that often not enough notice given.

ghostspirit · 18/03/2015 20:16

bit judgemental holepunch you have no idea how much pain im in you really dont.....

Anyway im thinking what someone else said on here to get some ice lollys so i can use the sticks from them. i would have thought i could get bamboo from homebase which is on route from work. the foil is easy.

Holepunch · 18/03/2015 20:17

No I don't but you can MN, so you can order a few things on Ebay, I really am confused.

ChopOrNot · 18/03/2015 20:18

Go to a non-tax paying coffee shop. Grab a few stirrers. Voila.
