my son is in year 7 and just told me he needs to go to the shops and get theses supplys for school project. tin foil, lolly sticks, bamboo or strawers. it does not sound like much i know. but i really dont want to spend sunday hunting down lolly sticks and i thought schools were meant to supply theses things.

He can get a pack of ice lollies for Iceland for £1 and a pack of 50 straws from Poundland.

I wouldn't really expect the school to supply this, the same as I don't expect them to supply cookery ingredients.

dementedpixie · 18/03/2015 20:28

My local tesco has coloured lolly sticks in the craft section

Andrewofgg · 18/03/2015 20:38

Ah so. Not theses but these - nice typo!

ghostspirit · 18/03/2015 20:41

My local tesco has all of these items. The Works sell massive packs of lolly sticks, as do hobbycraft. We also have The Range (they sell a good variety of art supplies). Can you get someone to go out to the shop with him? A gran / aunt maybe? Or ask a n other parent who has to make the same trip?

Andrewofgg · 18/03/2015 20:48

I wonder if it's an end of financial year thing? at our school we have to spend departmental budgets by feb half term and if we forget things we need to order in advance the activity gets cancelled :( if you supply the bits, at least it goes ahead.

We have to pay a few £ a year for DT and send cookery ingredients in.

zobey · 18/03/2015 21:27

Crafty crocodile. It's a website and they will be here in time. Reasonable priced too

YABU

I'm a teacher and I get £200 to buy everything I need for my class for the whole year.

You can imagine after I pay for exercise books, there isn't a whole lot left.

I've often soent my own money on buying art supplies for my class but now I've two dc I can't afford to do this any longer.

londonrach · 18/03/2015 21:45

Just been to wilinksons lolly sticks there very cheap!

alongcamespiders · 18/03/2015 22:00

Perhaps school art departments are so skint because the school's money is going on ridiculously expensive holiday places for teachers on school trips?

wannabestressfree · 18/03/2015 22:08

Yes that's completely it spiders.... All the jollies we have mean (shock horror) you have to buy a few bits....
Honesty it's not the end of the world you provide a few bits for your child's education. Bit of encouragement and enthuasim goes a long way ghost!!

morethanpotatoprints · 18/03/2015 22:13

YABU but its understandable.
The schools could have supplies and as there have been huge costs, charge the dc. But maybe that would cause hassle who knows?

So, as a parent you have to buy the stuff yourself.
The Works is your best friend and open on sundays.

I know, it's outrageous, isn't it. I mean why can't the bloody kids just go on school trips on their own?

Hmm
TheFullGammon · 18/03/2015 22:13

Why bother hunting down lolly sticks? A supermarket will have drinking straws, just send those and some foil.

FuckItBucket · 18/03/2015 22:13

I also feel sorry for your son. Lolly sticks are very important and he will explode if you don't personally buy them Grin

Wilkos will be fine. I did art GCSEs and never had to bring anything in. Food tech I had to bring everything

It is AIBU so even lolly sticks and a simple question can be turned into a neglected child thread Grin

ghostspirit · 18/03/2015 22:15

wannabe no its not the end of the world i was just asking as never been asked to supply anything before not for primary and not for my oldest who has now left school. so was new to me.... the notice is not great though

Pound shop or Wilkos or if you don't have either nearby ask local children's centre or toddler group ask if you can purchase off them.

bunchoffives · 18/03/2015 22:25

Supply theses? Surely the whole point of education is for the student to write their theses themselves, otherwise what are they for?

Although I'm haven't heard of any schools requiring theses, only higher eds.

WiggleGinger · 18/03/2015 22:27

Ok, notice wise you have plenty of time. It's not like you need them for tomorrow!

It's NU to expect you to have foil
In the house, plus agreed lolly sticks and straws can be bought from the supermarket.
Do as a PP said and buY a pack of lollies.
Tesco value straws will be cheap too! You shouldn't have to
Spend more than £2 all in if you buy value and no one will know.
