The 1985 mini series of course.

Oh God, squoosh, thankfully I have bypassed that horror.

I wish they'd followed on the series along with the books. I'd have loved to have seen Anne & Gilbert with a family.

DMCWelshCakes · 15/03/2015 18:46

Anne of Green Gables and My So-called Life? Are you me OP? Grin

How old would we say DiddyDragon would need to be before we watch it? She's 6 and a half now.

Floundering · 15/03/2015 19:08

How lovely - we have spent most of the day snuggled up on the sofa watching silly Disney/Pixar films & DC's are cooking me dinner before we watch Poldark .....(they are 18 & 20 so never too late!)

munchkin2902 · 15/03/2015 19:20

Just re-read all the books - they're on kindle! I didn't realise they went past Anne of ingleside as that's where my childhood collection stopped but so sad to read the First World War One. And the little dog waiting at the station! ??

I've been to PEI. I went to the 'theme park' and marilla took me in her minivan to a burger bar for lunch because it was the end of the season and the lunch place on site was closed. I went to the actual house, the haunted wood and lovers lane. I saw herons on the lake of shining water. I went to LM Montgomery's grave and the nearby post office/museum of her life. I had my picture taken in a straw hat with red braids and a pinafore dress.

I cannot recommend it enough. Charlottetown airport is basically one room. Every single person you encounter on the whole island says hello. Charlottetown itself is totally clapboard buildings. The soil really is red.

I'm welling up now remembering it all. It was wonderful. You worry that places won't be like in the book, but PEI was everything you'd hope.

PrimalLass · 15/03/2015 19:46

So which DVDs are ok? I'm not wasting my money on the made-up later ones and even if I had a video player my old 'taped off the telly' videos are in the Middle East in my step-dad's house.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 15/03/2015 19:57

Well I watched it with the DD's Smile funnily enough my 6 1/2 yo sat through all 3 hours and dd1 age nearly 9 only managed half (dd1 has ASD she may enjoy the books more as she related to Anne very well and loved her being a chatterbox and a dreamer like her) ... ds aged 10 hung around until the popcorn ran out which was nice.

I loved it all again and had 'something in my eye' all the way through... will need to read the books again. Hope you all had lovely Mother's days as well. Grin

Oh Magmatic it sounds amazing! I have to go. I was worried you were going to say the island was one big crack den with a high murder count.

Love that Marilla to you for a burger in her minivan Grin Grin

squoosh · 15/03/2015 20:12

Primal Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Green Gables - Sequel are the ones you want.

Ignore all the others!

AlPacinosHooHaa · 15/03/2015 20:23

oh that lovely face!

AnneEyhtMeyer · 15/03/2015 20:31

My DVD set had the two squoosh mentions, plus the awful WW1 travesty one, so if you get that don't be tempted to watch it!

Magmatic - oh I am so jealous. I really really want to go now.

marshmallowpies · 15/03/2015 20:41

I flew over PEI en route to Toronto and it did look idyllic - definitely want to go & so does DH bizarrely, he's no AOGG fan but somebody recommended PEI as being the most english bit of Canada & I think he likes the sound of it! But I dragged him to Newfoundland first as that was the place I most wanted to go, even more than PEI.

I never read beyond Anne of Ingleside, I didn't want the tragedy of WWI and knowing it was hinted at at the end of the book: 'a cross marked grave, somewhere in France' was too upsetting to read any further!

Bizarrely I don't own my own copy of AOGG itself - I had it out of the library and then collected the other books over the years. So I'll have to buy my DDs their own copy of AOGG when the time comes. Plus I have to replace my much loved copies of What Katy did at School and Heidi for them (for me) which got lost after one too many house moves Hmm

CheerfulYank · 15/03/2015 21:50

I loved the WWI book even though it was so terribly sad. Rilla was great.

PrimalLass · 15/03/2015 22:03

Thatnsk sqoosh and AnneEyhtMeyer. It's cheaper - just - to buy the three-dvd set.

Marshmallowpies - I have a very battered hardback copy of All that Katy Did. My mum tells everyone I read it at 7 Hmm

PrimalLass · 15/03/2015 22:05

(It's the Katy trilogy. I can't find another copy of them all together online.)

ChaiseLounger · 16/03/2015 03:54

Agree with AnneMeyer , Megan and Jonathan were beautifully cast as Anne and Gilbert. Like they were born to play them.

Early series make my heart melt.

Ignore the later ones. No one likes them. All we ever wanted was for Anne and Gilbert to have lots of kiddies and a white picket fence!! With Anne as the school mistress.

What a lovely day Wink

I did campaign for a few hours to call DS Gilbert based on JC in the miniseries.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 16/03/2015 18:00

Primal - just make sure when it arrives you aren't tempted to watch the third DVD - you will seriously regret it.

I have spent all day thinking about Anne & Gilbert after participating in this thread this weekend.

Squoosh, you utter bastard

bigmouthstrikesagain · 16/03/2015 20:55

Course now I have a yen to watch 'My so called life' and maybe some Gilroy Girls or Buffy or or...?!

OP posts:
squoosh · 17/03/2015 11:05

I'm sorry Bof. Think of them as soul cleansing, not one single mention of Lazarus' beshitten shroud or unspeakable filthy French practices!

squoosh · 17/03/2015 11:06

bigmouth My So Called Life definitely warrants rewatch. It's just as good as I remember.

Labtest7 · 20/03/2015 11:58

Best mini series ever!! Add me to the list of wannabe visitors to PEI. I refuse to acknowledge the 3rd instalment though
