To think that gravy on chips is illogical.. and working class...

My heart sinks when I have a meal with fries and (it IS always) a working class server decides without asking that any liquid on the plate is there solely to turn something that is clearly cooked for crispyness into mush. Its the same with beans or anything.

Its double illogical (which I think is a class thing) because NOT doing that means you can have soggy and shit or crispy and lovely, whereas once a fry even remotely touches mush, its fucked.

I know about Iceland, but are all working class meals flavourless gullet swilling mush? Is that where it comes from?

Ikea cafe is pretty working class - we go because it's cheap and cheerful although I opt fir the hot smoked salmon salad which is lovely. DP and kids get fish and chips - he is of working class background though poor love.

CupidStuntSurvivor · 14/03/2015 15:20

If Ikea food is all working class, then the salmon dish is also working class. So no OP, working class isn't all gut swelling mush.

kbbeanie · 14/03/2015 15:20

What i want to know is what makes a restaurant working class ?

Ubik1 · 14/03/2015 15:20

Honestly - the night I was in An Edinburgh chippie and had "Sauce?"barked at me I really thought she meant ketchup. And it was this brown stuff Confused

Worse when I asked for a hamburger supper and got a deep fried slab of meat slapped on top of my lovely chips.

The bark is usually "SALTNSAUCE!!??" It must be an acquired taste, I can't get enough of it on boiling hot chips. Agree that deep fried hamburgers are pretty shit.

mousmous · 14/03/2015 15:23

gravy needs to be in a pot at the side to dip the chips into.
but anyway curried ketchup or mayo are nicer with chips.

ShipwreckedAndComatose · 14/03/2015 15:24

Me, I prefer la sauce et des frites cos I is middle class

toldmywrath · 14/03/2015 15:24

Mmmmmm chippy chippy chips for tea tonight-will go lovely with our slow cooked beef stew. (stew has red wine & not ale-so am I posh or what?) Grin

vinegarandbrownpaper · 14/03/2015 15:25

I did think I'd get a modicum of support here Sad

My old Flatmate used to get sweet and sour chicken, special friend rice and chips from the Chinese.

She is a Geordie though Wink

Lydiand · 14/03/2015 15:25

What does Northern gravy taste like? Is it very different to southern gravy?

Ikea breakfast £1.99. Free tea or coffee. Lovely. Smile

kbbeanie · 14/03/2015 15:25

deep fried hamburgers ? that does sound pretty disgusting

in our fine 'working class' takeaway establishment we serve prime steak burgers

UnbelievableBollocks · 14/03/2015 15:26

The local chippy does fabulous onion gravy. Chips, lots of salt and vinegar covered in gravy is the good of the gods, as is cheesy chips and gravy a la poutine. Chips and curry sauce comes a good second.

msgrinch · 14/03/2015 15:26

I can't get over what a twat the op is. Do people actually think like this? Surely it's not very classy to talk about class this way.

Idontseeanydragons · 14/03/2015 15:27

So what's upper class food? Oysters? Because they tasted like salty snot the last time I had one...

ShipwreckedAndComatose · 14/03/2015 15:28

I did think I'd get a modicum of support here

Hahahahahahahahahahaha!

Op, you are priceless!

BellsUpMyNose · 14/03/2015 15:28

if youve never had chips and stew then you really dont know what your missing

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 14/03/2015 15:30

What about chips and swan gravy?

toldmywrath · 14/03/2015 15:32

Ubik I'm just wondering what special friend rice tastes like.

finnbarrcar · 14/03/2015 15:32

The OP has already made a witless remark about Swan (presumably Vestas) and Golden Virginia.

You can't reason with twats.

GoofyIsACow · 14/03/2015 15:32

Oooh gut swilling mush

CommanderShepard · 14/03/2015 15:33

Ah, a good old mumsnet favourite: A mc poster showing absolutely fuck all class. Well done, OP.

A parmo is the best thing I have ever had in my mouth, for the record.

RJnomore · 14/03/2015 15:34

I can't get Peter kaye out of my head now.

D'you do owt moist?

vinegarandbrownpaper · 14/03/2015 15:35

Oh really, this is ridiculous, can't one debate class and mealtime etiquette without bar room barracking and ridiculosity?
