To think that gravy on chips is illogical.. and working class...

My heart sinks when I have a meal with fries and (it IS always) a working class server decides without asking that any liquid on the plate is there solely to turn something that is clearly cooked for crispyness into mush. Its the same with beans or anything.

Its double illogical (which I think is a class thing) because NOT doing that means you can have soggy and shit or crispy and lovely, whereas once a fry even remotely touches mush, its fucked.

I know about Iceland, but are all working class meals flavourless gullet swilling mush? Is that where it comes from?

Coming down with a wee touch of the Katie Hopkins - OP?

CupidStuntSurvivor · 14/03/2015 15:36

No OP. And you knew that before you posted. Hence the goady title and thread.

Ubik1 · 14/03/2015 15:36

We live close to a fabulous Italian chippy.
I remember someone came in and asked for chicken nuggets and the server, insulted, have him a lecture on how this establishment on sells good home cooked chips food.

msgrinch · 14/03/2015 15:36

Yes, when one doesn't conduct oneself like a protentious knobber.

vinegarandbrownpaper · 14/03/2015 15:36

Can't the servers be taught to ask if they can't operate with natural judgement?

I don't have gravy with chips - I have jus

vindscreenviper · 14/03/2015 15:37

If you are very, very lucky (and working class) you may be able to source Jeff the Chef Chicken Parmo from your local Asda. Parmo originated as Smoggie fodder but plenty supermarkets in Co Durham seem to stock it, I've never been tempted yet.
we're having crocodile burgers and kangaroo burgers for tea, I still haven't decided whether to tell the DC before they tuck in, anybody else tried them yet? They are very working class burgers because they're from Iceland.

Idontseeanydragons · 14/03/2015 15:38

I like bar room barracking and ridiculosity.. Grin
as long as you serve it with chips and gravy

finnbarrcar · 14/03/2015 15:38

Anyone tried the ostrich steaks from Iceland...I'm intrigued.

CupidStuntSurvivor · 14/03/2015 15:38

If you'd said 'AIBU to expect to be asked if I want gravy over my food or on the side', there'd be more responses that tickled your fancy. But you made it about class, which has little to do with food. Food is about preferences and cost.

finnbarrcar · 14/03/2015 15:39

Your double negatives are all over the place OP.

squoosh · 14/03/2015 15:39

I'd imagine ostrich meat is quite lean and tough.

Joyfulldeathsquad · 14/03/2015 15:40

just for you op

pointythings · 14/03/2015 15:40

My natural judgement if I were serving you, OP, would be to pour the chips and gravy over your head...

Woahbodyforrrrm · 14/03/2015 15:42

On the subject of class. Surely if one were middle class, one would use windowlene to clean ones windows rather then vinegar and brown paper which is surely something only us working class folk do!??

I love vinegar and gravy on my chips, it's bloody delicious!

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 14/03/2015 15:42

Working class food? You mean like eel n' pie shops from the east end in the 1800s? jellied eels? or generally anything from a chippy these days?? What????

Who cares? Seriously.

Some of the best food in the world is Street food or has your dreaded "working class" roots. Imagine how much less vibrant and diverse our diets would be if not for that.

duckbilled · 14/03/2015 15:46

I really fancy a pizza crunch supper for dinner now (pizza in batter then deep fried with chips), with a side of curry sauce and a giant juicy pickled onion!!

Lydiand · 14/03/2015 15:46

I had chicken and jacket potato in Devon once, and they poured gravy on it without asking.

To be fair, they were working class servers. They get everywhere.

finnbarrcar · 14/03/2015 15:46

She probably doesn't consider "street" food working class because it's the sort of thing middle class travellers eat when they're in Bali on a gap year.

vindscreenviper · 14/03/2015 15:46

finbarr I bought the ostrich steaks as well! Haven't tried them yet but I'll let you know.
I was walking past Iceland and the posters advertising ostrich steaks tempted me in.

finnbarrcar · 14/03/2015 15:49

Thanks vind, they look really nice in the advert and 21 day aged sirloin is pretty expensive when you're feeding 5 adults.

squoosh · 14/03/2015 15:50

The working class servers in Devon are probably more acceptable, with their ruddy cheeked, straw chewing, bucolic charm.

KeepitDown · 14/03/2015 15:50

Is this a 'make a point' thread about some of the middle class mockery threads that go on here?

Also, chips and gravy are delicious, even better with cheese added... a poutine I think it's called? Gotta admit 'poutine' sounds posh. Grin

imnottoofussed · 14/03/2015 15:51

Just to add to the "debate" I've developed an addiction to kfc fries and gravy, it's amazing. And I had chip shop chips and gravy for dinner at work yesterday yum. I've honestly never been anywhere that automatically poured gravy on chips for you unless it was an actual chippy and you had asked for chips and gravy.
