To think that gravy on chips is illogical.. and working class...

My heart sinks when I have a meal with fries and (it IS always) a working class server decides without asking that any liquid on the plate is there solely to turn something that is clearly cooked for crispyness into mush. Its the same with beans or anything.

Its double illogical (which I think is a class thing) because NOT doing that means you can have soggy and shit or crispy and lovely, whereas once a fry even remotely touches mush, its fucked.

I know about Iceland, but are all working class meals flavourless gullet swilling mush? Is that where it comes from?

Don't ever go to Canada - they add gravy AND funny cheese bits. How desperately non-U.

Have you every thought of requesting no gravy of the serfs who serve you? Perhaps is that too obvious or too off-putting for you, given that you'd have to speak to them?

teacupnic · 14/03/2015 14:56

You say working class like it's a bad thing?

I don't feel good has a class anyway. You can eat organic quinoa with a greggs sausage roll for a I care.

ghostyslovesheep · 14/03/2015 14:56

fries? so nouveau riche rather than proper posh

catgirl1976 · 14/03/2015 14:56

Chips and gravy is only less awesome than cheesy chips.

Though DH (Southener) thinks I am a heathen on both counts.

It's. A. Northern. Thing.

Though obviously every single one of us is a peasant OP. Grin

Bless your heart... good effort love.

TheHobbit · 14/03/2015 14:56

One word - cuckoo

DontDrinkandFacebook · 14/03/2015 14:57

Its double illogical (which I think is a class thing)

that has made my day. Grin

catgirl1976 · 14/03/2015 14:57

Anyway, where do you eat that puts gravy on chips automatically?

I have never seen this in any restaurant be it naice or greasy spoon

You are clearly eating out exclusively in a Norther chip shop.

SaucyJack · 14/03/2015 14:58

YANBU actually. I always use my cabbage to build a gravy dam on my plate so that my roasties stay nice and dry and crispy.

ninetynineonehundred · 14/03/2015 14:58

I can't be the only person who desperately wants chips and gravy for dinner now?

PilchardPrincess · 14/03/2015 14:58
Confused

It's a regional thing isn't it?

I went to University in Manchester and used to get chips and gravy MAN it was LUSH beautiful chips with salty meaty gravy on. Same principle as roast potatoes with gravy don't you like that OP? You silly billy.

duckbilled · 14/03/2015 14:58

I love poutine when in Canada mmmmm. Also a brilliant special in Glasgow - chips, rice, curry sauce and cheese from the Indian takeaway. I will never be skinny Wink

loveliesbleeding1 · 14/03/2015 14:59

Thanks for the laugh,you crackerjack.

Chillyegg · 14/03/2015 14:59

Never say anything bad about chips and gravy! It shouldn't even be pronounced as gravy! Its graaaave.

Tut
You philistine!

Beans/ mushy peas are also delightful.

ghostyslovesheep · 14/03/2015 14:59

yes but Saucyjack are you working class??? Grin

Lifesalemon · 14/03/2015 14:59

It probably pained the poor working class server to pour gravy on your chips too OP but they would have lost their job if they had poured it over your head.

PancyFants · 14/03/2015 15:00

Where do you dine? BHS?

anothernumberone · 14/03/2015 15:00

This is a bit like the salt and sauce or salt and vinegar divide that is central to the great Scottish divide. I am pretty sure the independence vote essentially came down to answering this question.

CupidStuntSurvivor · 14/03/2015 15:00

Manchester really does have great chips and gravy. I'm extra-heathen and have been known to have chips, CHEESE and gravy Grin

squoosh · 14/03/2015 15:00

Cheese and garlic chips is the king of the 3am post night out snacks.

ELR · 14/03/2015 15:01

Get it right love you wouldn't have fries with gravy no, fries go with burgers but nothing wrong with chips and gravy even better though is chips and mushy peas.

WayfaringStranger · 14/03/2015 15:01

I really don't like gravy in any context.

bobthebuddha · 14/03/2015 15:01

Anyway, what on earth made you assume chips/fries are a non working-class food, gravy or otherwise? They came from the streets, not from stately homes.

catgirl1976 · 14/03/2015 15:01

I really want to try a Parmo. A friend from the NE keeps talking about them, but I've never seen one IRL :(
