AIBU to sacrifice bedroom floor space for a super king bed

We have a standard double bed 4ft6 wide. Recently slept in a super king 6ft wide and it was vastly preferable. Just measured up and changing to a super king would leave us with just about room for a bedside cabinet and a few inches to the wall on one side and clearance for dressing room door on the other. We could go up to a king size 5ft bed as a compromise but seems like a lot of effort/expense to buy new bed, mattress and bedding to only gain 6 inches! AIBU to put bed space above floor space?

Go for it. How much time do you spend walking round your bedroom floor for the Hell of it?

yanbu
go for it.
and consider single duvets as well for a good night's sleep.

BellaMoo · 14/03/2015 14:46

YANBU. Best thing we ever bought.

originalusernamefail · 14/03/2015 14:48

I'd be tempted to sacrifice DH for a super king bed Wink!

RedToothBrush · 14/03/2015 14:50

Yes. Do it.

musicalendorphins2 · 14/03/2015 14:50

We are going to. Can't wait, even dh's snoring is less loud in a king bed.

mysteryfairy · 14/03/2015 14:50

Good to see that people do think they make a difference and I'm not just anti social!

I'm just worry it will annoy me that my bedroom is nearly all bed! I've moved the double to the boundaries of the bed I fancy in either direction to make sure the floor space is passable on both sides but obviously when I do that I don't get the true picture as there is a load of extra space generated on the other side.

I sacrificed exP to maintain floor space and keep all 4ft6 to myself Wink.

Welshmaenad · 14/03/2015 14:55

Single duvets? DH and i have king size duvet each!

GreyjoysAnatomy · 14/03/2015 14:55

It's not 6" though, it's 1'6" Wink

Yanbu. You don't need the space for a dresser etc, I'm assuming, since you have a dressing room so what else do you need it for?

We have a KS and I'd happily go up to a super if we had the space as dh is a broad 6'3" bloke and takes up a heap of room while I'm squirreled away I'm the corner Grin

diddl · 14/03/2015 14:55

We have a superking I think.

We're in Germany & it's a standard size for couples!

We have two single mattresses in one frame & also have a single duvet each.

mysteryfairy · 14/03/2015 14:56

Lol DH is away for work 2 or 3 nights a week and those nights are fine. Perhaps I can just ask him not to come back!

Get a super king. Then just use the extra space under bed for storage

mysteryfairy · 14/03/2015 14:59

Greyjoy - I meant 6 inches if we only buy a king rather than a super king. I've also noticed that ikea do some beds that are a continental king and 5ft 3 but not keen in the looks of the ikea beds or being restricted to only their mattresses.

Finola1step · 14/03/2015 14:59

Superking. No contest.

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 14/03/2015 14:59

I'm with Welsh, we also have a king size duvet each, it's fab!

Stinkersmum · 14/03/2015 14:59

Go for it. I've never understood the need for space in bedrooms aside from enough to get a decent bed and some storage. Spacious kitchen? Yes. Big garden? Yes. Roomy bedroom? No. Not at the expense of a better bed anyway.

Boreoff456 · 14/03/2015 15:00

We are doing this. We stayed in a super king while we were away. Was awesome. As long as I can open my wardrobes and room to get in and out, its fine. Majority of the time I am in the bedroom. I am in the bed. Don't need lots of other space.

carameldecaflatte · 14/03/2015 15:09

Do it! How much time do you spend on the floor?

Sometimes it's almost like being in bed alone... dh snoring in the distance, not bouncing up and down or being kicked when he turns over (and vice versa). Bliss. Grin

Westendgal · 14/03/2015 15:17

Top tip for a big bed--you need big pillows, i.e longer ones. Small ones just look daft and don't really work.

finnbarrcar · 14/03/2015 15:20

We did this. My bed is amazing, having a gigantic greyhound sharing the space too, me and DH NEEDED a Superking!

The only downside is our floorspace is greatly reduced and I have crap spacial awareness, I bang into the furniture all the time and am permanently covered in bruises on my legs and hips from bumbling around to the bog in the middle of the night.

...but the big bed is worth it.

nightswift · 14/03/2015 15:22

Could never go back now!

Hmm, we went up from normal double to king size and while it is lovely, the lack of floor space is a bit of a pain, we both tend to be getting dressed at the same time and now we are constantly having to say "excuse me, can I squeeze past". DH's side is particularly narrow and it is a squeeze to bend over and pick things up from the floor, or get at stuff under the bed on that side.
