AIBU to sacrifice bedroom floor space for a super king bed

We have a standard double bed 4ft6 wide. Recently slept in a super king 6ft wide and it was vastly preferable. Just measured up and changing to a super king would leave us with just about room for a bedside cabinet and a few inches to the wall on one side and clearance for dressing room door on the other. We could go up to a king size 5ft bed as a compromise but seems like a lot of effort/expense to buy new bed, mattress and bedding to only gain 6 inches! AIBU to put bed space above floor space?

Love our superking. We are really lucky in that we have a massive bedroom but even if we didn't if you consider you spend most time in your bedroom sleeping (and stuff lol) then its worth it.

We sacrificed a bed side table and floor space. It annoys me that the only small light is on my side (the far side of the room) but other than that we haven't regretted it. We have 18mo DTs and we needed the extra bed space!

We are getting super king zip linked 2 mattresses divan with storage underneath. Firm for the heavy man, medium for me. Cannot wait!!!!

Kiffykaffycoffee · 14/03/2015 19:41

Love our Superking but a word of warning: you will be spoilt. If you go and stay in a hotel, holiday cottage etc with a stNdard double you will feel cramped and uncomfortable after getting used to a Superking.

TattyDevine · 14/03/2015 19:54

I hate going to the inlaws with their concrete slab duvets and double sized crap bed Grin

Sod it, you get to appreciate it even more when you are at home!

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 14/03/2015 19:55

Get the super king. Bloody lovely.

DilapidatedGlamourpuss · 14/03/2015 21:38

YANBU. I miss my superking bed so much! Cuddle DP, then roll away for actual sleep and manage to spread out Smile

AnnieThePianist · 14/03/2015 21:42

YABU. Get a king size.

You'd be surprised the difference six inches can make.

NorksWar · 14/03/2015 21:46

Super king bed = Best thing ever.
Changing the quilt cover = Most annoying thing in the whole wide world (currently trying to persuade my DP to get two single quilts as changing our current one makes me so angry I want to kill people).

canweseethebunnies · 14/03/2015 21:48

I agree Annie. Don't rule out a king size. The 6'' makes all the difference. With dd1 we coslept in a double and it was hell. Currently co sleeping with dd2 in a king size and it's fine.

How to change your duvet cover

facedontfit · 14/03/2015 21:54

Would not be without my SK bed.

Clothes pegs on the corners when changing the cover - easy!

FunMitFlags · 14/03/2015 21:55

Double to king size makes a huge difference.

GinnelsandWhippets · 14/03/2015 21:59

Superking all the way! We have a decent sized bedroom now but in our previous place we had about the same amount of space as you describe. Totally worth it. You will sleep like a baby.

Shoulder2Shoulder · 14/03/2015 22:11

So, whats the difference between superking and Queensize or are they the same?

humlebee7 · 14/03/2015 22:11

Yes agree with everyone - super king is the best. I'm currently 37 weeks pregnant hogging the whole thing whilst DH has been evicted to the hard double in the spare room.

Only downside is going on holiday etc if you get a double it's totally rubbish and feels tiny.

My parents have a double and try to make out that we are not as happily married as they are - because they've slept in a double for forty years and would 'miss' each other in a bigger bed. Yeah right.

Super king equals better night sleep. Especially now DD likes to join me at 5am rather frequently and sleep horizontally across the bed.

mousmous · 14/03/2015 22:31

afaik queensize is american for small double

mousmous · 14/03/2015 22:34

there are lots of studies showing better sleep quality with separate sleep arrangement.
king/superking with separate duvets is a good compromise imo.

trixymalixy · 14/03/2015 22:40

Go for it!

DowntownFunk · 14/03/2015 22:45

Have had superkingsize beds for 15 years now. YANBU.

Princesspond · 14/03/2015 22:50

We went from a double (black wrought iron) bed to a super king ottoman honestly it's fab, so spacious (still a bit tight when both kids clamber in and spread out mind). But because it's lower and doesn't have a foot end it looks far less imposing than the old bed so the bedroom doesn't look cramped at all. It's weird at first though so big you can't feel each other. Oddly we sold our old bed from a couple down sizing from sk to double, not sure I could do that!

CocktailQueen · 14/03/2015 22:54

Yes! We have a super king and I love it. It has ruined me for double beds though - they feel tiiinnnnny. Go for it! You spend more time sleeping than you do walking round your bedroom!

Firedemon · 14/03/2015 23:01

Super king bed here and a pretty small room. It's pretty much all bed bar a fitted wardrobe and a tiny cabinet. Worth the sacrifice of floor space though. We spend nearly a third of our lives in bed so it's important that it's the comfiest it can possibly be!

WestEast · 14/03/2015 23:04

You have a dressing room? Id be pulling up the carpet and laying wall to wall mattress.
