AIBU to sacrifice bedroom floor space for a super king bed

We have a standard double bed 4ft6 wide. Recently slept in a super king 6ft wide and it was vastly preferable. Just measured up and changing to a super king would leave us with just about room for a bedside cabinet and a few inches to the wall on one side and clearance for dressing room door on the other. We could go up to a king size 5ft bed as a compromise but seems like a lot of effort/expense to buy new bed, mattress and bedding to only gain 6 inches! AIBU to put bed space above floor space?

We've got a small super king and it is fab. Especially as DD often ends up in our bed. Proper super king would be even better!

Thanks - heading out to bed shop now...

I have a bed so big I didn't think there is a name for it! It's 3 Ikea single beds together for me, 4 year old and 10 months old. Two single duvets and a baby sleeping bag. I'd love more pillows on it to make it extra luxurious but will hold off until baby is bigger.

I adore it as both my kiddos near by but still not too squashed (or at least I can move them over when they both gravitate towards me.

Floggingmolly · 14/03/2015 15:40

It doesn't matter that the room is all bed. It's a bedroom; it's all about the bed!

DisappointedOne · 14/03/2015 15:43

Have had a super king for over 10 years. Wouldn't be without it. Get an ottoman/storage one though.

DisappointedOne · 14/03/2015 15:56

Gunpowder what on earth is a "small super king"? 6 foot is 6 foot!

DisappointedOne · 14/03/2015 15:56

We have 6 normal pillows on ours - 2 for me, 2 for DH and the middle ones are DD's.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 14/03/2015 15:58

We have a super king which we bought in our previous house which had a huge bedroom.

When we moved to our present house there was no way in hell we were giving up our lovely big bed. We only have space for a tall chest of drawers but we manage, less carpet to hoover Wink

DoItTooJulia · 14/03/2015 16:12

Aren't ikea super kings smaller? Maybe that's what gunpowder meant? If that's the case of course, I might be talking shite!Grin

Marynary · 14/03/2015 17:40

We used to have a superking as when the children were younger they were always getting into our bed. I always felt it made the bedroom look and seem smaller than it is though so recently have gone down to kingsize and I much prefer it. I can't see the point of a really big bed if only two normal size people are sleeping in it.

vdbfamily · 14/03/2015 18:37

We have superking + a bit of extra length as DH is 6'7". Does make sheets a bit difficult. Lovely if your kids tend to gather in your bed in the morning. Regretting it slightly at the mo as marketing our house and it really does fill our bedroom but looking forward to moving it to a bigger bedroom soon!

We recently got a king size bed after years in an uncomfortable double. It has made a huge difference. So has a great new mattress.

ihatemyphone99 · 14/03/2015 19:12

We have a king but as soon as we move I'm getting a super king! YANBU

ihatemyphone99 · 14/03/2015 19:13

ps why do hotels/holiday rentals still have double beds?! I absolutely will not go anywhere that doesn't at least have a king. Discounts so many otherwise nice looking cottages.

applecatchers36 · 14/03/2015 19:14

YANBU excellent decision we love ours

Isabelleforyourbicycle · 14/03/2015 19:18

We have a super king , it is excellent. Normal size beds seem tiny in comparison. What else do you need space for in your room? Dressing, a mirror, clothes storage.

You do have to buy bigger size bedding obviously and it can cost a lot more!!

QueenFuri · 14/03/2015 19:19

YANBU my new king size is arriving next week our room is tiny and we are in a 4'6 bed its much too small. I can't wait for my new bed to arrive!!

RandomMess · 14/03/2015 19:23

We got an Ikea in the end - 2 singles bolted together. Fantastic made a huge difference ours is 180cm wide and have single quilts Smile

Theoretician · 14/03/2015 19:24

I've also noticed that ikea do some beds that are a continental king and 5ft 3 but not keen in the looks of the ikea beds or being restricted to only their mattresses

You don't have to have an Ikea mattress if you buy a bed in a continental size, and I'd recommend you don't. The Ikea mattress I bought in 1998 was shit, I replaced it with a Sealey one from an online company.

Momagain1 · 14/03/2015 19:24

We have an American Queen UK king, and a narrow room. That shuffling around to get in bed, or make the bed, gets to be a PITA very swiftly. Gaining just 6" from what you have now might well be a compromise you can live with.

We once slept in a California King size. Seems the best size if you want to avoid encountering each other in bed. Or orgies. Whichever!

Crocodopolis · 14/03/2015 19:24

Do eet.

I have a superking and it is heaven on a stick.

Theoretician · 14/03/2015 19:25

Sealy

LionsDontWeaveLentils · 14/03/2015 19:27

I have a super king sized bed. When we first got it we had a small room and basically had to move almost all the rest of our stuff out of the room. We have a bit more space now, but even if I could fit nothing else in the room I would never go back to a smaller bed. It is awesome Grin

Looserella · 14/03/2015 19:29

Get the superking!

OttiliaVonBCup · 14/03/2015 19:31

You need a big bed.
There's always children, dogs, threesomes....
Not at the same time. Obviously.

Besides, less floor to hoover.
