God knows what mine gets up to all day. I have asked on occasion - I really have - but I get the urge to start smashing the crockery by the time he finishes the first sentence. I think it might involve a sophisticated way of counting toilet rolls.

AIBU to start making things up (weasel trainer, Beyonce's body double, etc.) if anyone asks me again what he does?

I know what he does, I have done something similar in the past as our degrees are very similar. I also sometimes spot him on the news which amuses the DC's!

Number3cometome · 10/03/2015 11:43

My ex didn't do anything for a living, he was a lazy twat.

OH is a teacher - he erm, teaches.

PurpleWithRed · 10/03/2015 11:43

I know exactly what mine does, not least because I volunteer in the same field and same area and sometimes we meet up on a job. And if I want to know where he is I can call control and they will track him down for me.

Chips1999 · 10/03/2015 11:43

Yes of course, although DH's job can vary wildly day to day depending on what day of the month it is, staff sickness etc.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 10/03/2015 11:43

Yes, we met on a grad scheme so used to do pretty much the same job. I'm a SAHM now and he's changed roles a few times and been promoted since but I know the industry so still keep up to date with what he's up to, and he often asks for advice on issues.

TwoLittleTerrors · 10/03/2015 11:44

He's a post doc. I used to be one in a related field. So I understand what the work is about. As much as another scientist from a slightly different field.

Honeydragon · 10/03/2015 11:45

Plinkin. CAD operators are bloody impossible to find .... We're always looking. I've considered setting snares outside Maplins....

I know what dh does, it's our own business.

Dh never really grasped what I did though. Grin

Which is fine.

We also both signed a lot of non disclosure agreements so conversations about work are interesting.

Purplepoodle · 10/03/2015 11:45

Yep lorry driver so pretty simple however ask dh what I do - he says something in a hospital

TheOriginalWinkly · 10/03/2015 11:46

DH is a police officer. I'm a police officer, though after 9 months of glorious maternity leave I've managed to block out most of what happens in a day Grin

TwoLittleTerrors · 10/03/2015 11:47

And I know what is a six sigma master black belt mentioned up thread. It is about continuous improvement in service delivery. It is used in IT services. With an amusing name CSI Smile

Sallystyle · 10/03/2015 11:49

I thought the six sigma black belt thing meant someone had 6 black belts in karate Hmm

Number3cometome · 10/03/2015 11:52

I used to be a Service Delivery Manager (banking)
We also done something called 'Green belt' which has nothing to do with land.

Honeydragon · 10/03/2015 11:54

I thought the six sigma black belt thing meant someone had 6 black belts in karate

Gosh. I bet that's a bugger when your desperate for a wee.

HSMMaCM · 10/03/2015 12:02

DH works for with me, so I know what he does.

TeenAndTween · 10/03/2015 12:08

DH is retired now and I am a SAHM, but we used to work for the same large multi-national in similar departments. Not only did I know what he did all day, his team would also come up and tell me whether he had had fruit salad or sticky toffee pudding Cake for dessert in the canteen!

0x530x610x750x630x79 · 10/03/2015 12:15

wouldn't 6 belts really affect your ability to bend and do karate presuming you started at your waist and went up. (i am the she of the he with the silly job title).

and don't worry green belt if you practice really hard and crunch those stats you too can be master.

CornChips · 10/03/2015 12:47

Mine helps small businesses in developing countries so he travels alot. It is quite interesting. I used to be in the same field, but now do sort of freelance admin. We talk alot about work to each other, but mainly about wanker bosses rather than the minutiae.

When he gets onto the topic of his favourite hobby of cycling though...... [yawn]

Immovableobject · 10/03/2015 12:52

Mine is sat behind me right now and is currently surfing websites about Lavender - not sure what this has to do with semiconductors, which is the official game we're in!
And I can stand next to him all day and still be fairly clueless about what he's doing - did I mention semiconductors? might as well be magic beans... I just keep the books Smile

calculatorsatdawn · 10/03/2015 12:59

I used to be DPs boss so I know exactly what he does all day - piss about on the internet then be ready with his coat on at 5.29pm when I need something looking at urgently.

I used to spend all day looking at his bum.

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 10/03/2015 12:59

My DH works in a very specialised area of engineering within the oil and gas industry. I'm not an engineer, so I can't explain it fully but I know that he ultimately has responsibility for the lives of other workers, that he works bloody hard and that there is a LOT of banter in the mainly male office Grin

treacleturkey · 10/03/2015 13:02

This is making me cringe......

Witchofthenorth · 10/03/2015 13:03

Yes I do...he is a tattoo artist. Spends the day drawing on people Smile

Marylou2 · 10/03/2015 13:05

I used to work with DH and do the same job.I know exactly what it entails and he gives me a blow by blow account of his day.Riveting!

toktok · 10/03/2015 13:05

I have a general idea, but not the details as he is under a non disclosure agreement. I don't understand the technical details of his work, but his company are often in the media so I get the overall idea. People rarely ask me what he does tbh, but I just tell them his job title and that is enough.

CallMeExhausted · 10/03/2015 13:06

I know exactly what he does, as I did a job very similar over 10 years ago.

He is not able to "leave" work once he leaves work... 14 hour days and working 7 days a week is common.

He has my sympathies.
