People who talk slowly

I think IABU probably so please don't flame me...just after some opinions.
I'm very chatty, I'm busy at work and can talk at a million miles an hour.
I'm finding it hard with a new person at work who talks really slowly. I know that interrupting is the wrong thing to do, will throw them off their train of thought etc but honestly they really take ages to get to their point. And quite often near the point their talking just sort of peters out to a kind of mutter/laugh/shrug.
What's the best thing to do? Are you a slow and steady talker with any tips?
I do end up cutting in or someone interrupts us and then it's back to the beginning of the conversation....it's so painfully slow!
Also, there are no disabilities/learning difficulties etc before anyone suggests it

I do shorthand. My speediest is when I forget about comprehending what people are saying but when it goes in my ears and comes out of my hand.

It's trance-like.

I'd have to go slower to interact or give an informed precis without referring to my notes.

Sorry to go on about stammering, but avoiding the phone is typical of many people who stammer.

Is this person avoiding asking for help altogether, or avoiding asking by phone?

Apart from a speech problem, I can only think this colleague must be very nervous being in a new job.

Really interesting thread,OP!

They may be avoiding asking for help, and not just my fault- everyone is really busy so you do need to "interrupt" to ask which I understand can be tough if you are new.
I've had a few jobs in my time and there are places in the same type of work where the pace is slower, and there's less need to be reacting so fast all the time. If that's all the experience they had in the past then they have not made a total error in choosing this sort of work IYSWIM but maybe this office isn't right for them i have to battle to get to the loo I am so busy

In case anyone is interested....the person was let go.
They made a couple of major errors on basic stuff which caused chaos. Apparently they said they had wanted to stay as they found the staff really lovely and friendly, so I guess I learnt enough patience.

I read somewhere that speaking slow is the first sign of schizophrenia as their brain works at different speed and they do get messed up trying to talk about something.. not everyone but some do...
