To be torn between a dog or baby?!

DH and I have been planning to get a dog for as long as I can remember - I've been desperate for one since my childhood dog died 10 years ago.

We finally have our own house with a decent garden and are making plans to get one in the summer when we'll both take several weeks off work between us to train / settle the puppy.

However in recent weeks I've felt my biological clock starting to tick (I'm 27, have been married for a year - DH is a couple of years older). We both have good, stable jobs. I'm lucky to be in an excellent public sector job which is family friendly and offers 6 months full pay maternity leave as well as generous annual leave entitlements My parents are a young late 50's and my mum is looking to retire in the next year, and has already offered to have any future grandchild 2 days a week and DH's mum has also offered 1 day so we would be in a good position child care wise, as we would both likely go back to work full time.

I feel like it's an absolute choice between one or the other though! If I fell pregnant now (we're not ttc) we would have to kiss the canine dreams goodbye, which would break my heart. Taking on both just seems like too much work!

It's very unfair to leave a dog at home all day while you are at work.

Our DDog and DCat have full access to the garden and house while we're at work (they both use the cat flap), we leave at 7am and get in at 5pm. DDog doesn't chew furniture or soil the house. Neighbours have all said ours doesn't bark or whine when we're at work. Vet says he is health and well balanced. You can have animals and work FT without it being a problem.

I have a baby and a dog. Dog came after the baby and is an older dog not a puppy. It's definitely doable. i invested in an ergo baby carrier so the dog gets a good long walk every day without me battling with a pram through fields!

Everyone who has said about the working full time issue, While I agree with you in general, I believe OP says upthread that both her and her dh have flexible working and can stagger their hours, and that another family member (I think it was her father) will also help look after the dog. So it's not an issue in the way it would be for some.

Dog. I'd much rather look at pictures of a puppy than countless pictures pictures of the same baby on facebook. Breaks up the monotony!

I'm almost the same, although we got a dog because I don't want children rather than deciding between the two. We both work full time but full time doesn't necessarily mean 9-5. I work 9-5 but my other half works 7-3. Dog is therefore only on its own 8.45-11 and 1-3.15 and gets an 30 mins to an hour walk at first thing and at lunchtime as we both come home for lunches and live close to work. We've got a webcam and she sleeps for 90% of that time most days. Depending on the hours worked, you can happily have a dog and work full time. Friday's she comes to work with me and sleeps under my desk.

She is out and about 2-3 hours a day now, mostly off lead, and comes on holiday with us with the exception of skiing trips.

We did have to take annual leave when she was a young pup to house train her and build her up to being left for the 2-2.5 hour slots though.

A Border Collie! He is the laziest BC in the world! He hates walks, but loves playing ball in the garden. He also digs massive holes in the garden to lie in, when it is hot.

It took us a while to work out it was him, and we always blamed the girls Grin until we caught him at it.

he is also scared of our chickens...
