I'm ready to take this on the head if i really ABU....

DS (18) strolled into the kitchen last night and said he and a group of friends are thinking of going on holiday this summer, after A'levels.

To Magaluf.

Over. My. Dead. Body. I said.

I mean, i know IBU. But ugh. Magaluf?

DS went off abroad at that age. I didn't recognize him when I met him at the airport on return. He'd peroxided his hair & had an eyebrow pierced. He survived. He's about to have a PFB - wait till h/she is a bit older & wicked Granny tells 'em what Dad got up to.

reddaisy · 22/02/2015 13:44

Did they have a good time, ikiboo?

Chilliplantbox · 22/02/2015 13:45

LOL you're being a snob. Next

blueberrymuffffin · 22/02/2015 13:46

But whatever happened to nice cultural places like Paris?
ha ha I can't stop laughing

He's your little boy, I get it. But in the words of Elsa ''let it go...let it go...''

This is what they do at 18. I did it, had a bloody ball and I lived to tell the tale.

I would let him go but give him some rules like ask him to keep in touch so you're not worrying. Warn him against doing those balloons etc. Teach him to be safe and sensible.

LinesThatICouldntChange · 22/02/2015 13:46

It's a rite of passage. They often want to go somewhere vile after A Levels. Then a few years later they can't be doing with all that nonsense and start doing the cultural City breaks that you took them on as youngsters.
It all comes full circle eventually!

PurpleAlert · 22/02/2015 13:51

I think Majorca Rocks in Magaluf is pretty much a rite of passage for most 18 year olds! My DD went with a cowd of friends after her A levels last year and had a whale of a time! IT wouldn't have crossed my mind to say no- she was 18 and an adult!

MrsSchadenfreude · 22/02/2015 13:52

Violet, yup. We were big girls. Grin

SilenceInTheLibrary · 22/02/2015 13:54

Oh oh oh OP I feel your pain - I'm just imagining it now and my pfb is only 13.

Don't let him go without proper travel insurance.

turningvioletviolet · 22/02/2015 13:56

Well, I'm off to pick 8yr old dd2 up from dance now. She is sweet and cute and loves her mummy and will NEVER tell me she's going on holiday to Magaluf.

yabu - he doesn't want to take in culture and history

he wants to get so pissed he sicks up his own colon and shag a lot

insanityscratching · 22/02/2015 13:59

Ds and his friends went after A levels, they had a great time. Ds came home looking as rough as a badger's arse and it took him a week to recover from the booze, the lack of sleep, the sunburn and lack of decent food but he'd enjoyed it.He thankfully came home without a dodgy tattoo (much too squeamish) and with his clothes intact unlike some of his mates who had used dishwasher powder to rinse their clothes in after mistaking it for laundry powder.

ilovesooty · 22/02/2015 14:00

I'm sure she might in 10 years time.
I don't imagine any love he feels for you and his wish to go to Magaluf are connected.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 22/02/2015 14:06

ds1-19 went to Magaluf last summer, he returned in one piece, no tats and no sti's , as far as I know.

eyebags63 · 22/02/2015 14:13

I thought going to "insert making destination", getting blind drunk, vomiting everywhere and coming home with an STD was a rite of passage for many teenagers these days.

he is 18 and of course YABVU. the phase "get a grip" comes to mind.

Awks · 22/02/2015 14:15

My dd and her mates went to Kavos after A levels, and came back saying how amazingly fantabulous it was. Later, the truth came out that in actual fact 4 days into the week they were so knackered and tired they'd stayed in for the last 3 nights :)

eyebags63 · 22/02/2015 14:16
  • I meant 'manky destination'.

just tell him to stay away from any of those roadside tattooists.

ilovesooty · 22/02/2015 14:17

I don't think coming back with an STI needs to be a rite of passage. There's enough information out there for an 18 year old to take responsibility for his sexual health.

HeyheyheyGoodbye · 22/02/2015 14:19

I loved my post-A' level holiday to Tenerife with my mates. We came back paler than when we went Grin It was grand.

SecretSquirrels · 22/02/2015 14:21

DS did it last year after A levels.
I tried to suggest alternative choices of destination but Kavos beat culture.

He was very sheltered and the whole experience was an education to him (and he had watched Sun, Sea). He endured rather than enjoyed it. It's something he has ticked off and done and he need never do again Grin.

lanbro · 22/02/2015 14:23

Tbf I've been to Malia, Faliraki, Ibiza and Magaluf and I never got up to the things I see on those programmes! Yes, it happens but millions of teenagers go every year and millions are fine. YABU

Doilooklikeatourist · 22/02/2015 14:27

Violet the girls go to Zante !
DS went to Magaluf ( he survived )After his A levels , last year he and the boys went to Zante
DD who'll be only 17 has already booked her girls holiday to Zante
Hell be fine !
I told her I'll be on that sand, sea and suspicious parents programme !

KatieScarlettreregged · 22/02/2015 14:31

My parents (God bless em) for my 21st birthday, paid for a holiday in Magaluf. A club 18-30 holiday in Magaluf. Because that's what the young ones like, isn't it? They had no idea and to this day still have no idea about THAT trip Wink.

Hulababy · 22/02/2015 14:33

He is 18 and that's what he wants to do. Its his money and all that. Just remind him clearly, before he goes, about the dangers of dodgy tattoos and sleeping around, and drugs. Ad make sure he has decent and adequate travel insurance.

Magaluf is horrible to an adult though. I really like Majorca but Magaluf was not pleasant when we called there on a trip round the island one day. It was, however, VERY cheap to eat on the sea front - your typical Brits Abroad type offerings, with cheap beer to wash it down. It was all very brash and loud. Lots of bright flashing lights and signs for clubs nights, and more Hmm , around - BUT I am taking from the point of view of a 40+ year old, now a 18 year old having their first holiday abroad with mates.

My sister did the whole holiday with friends abroad thing around that age. On the whole she came back with no real issues. Only one time was there a problem - but didn't involve drugs or reckless sex and STIs. More the dancing on bars having had a drink I think! But the travel insurance was very important!

Aeroflotgirl · 22/02/2015 14:56

I echo what others have said, no yiu can't, he's an adult, he has to spread his wings.
