To ask which village to move to in Cheshire

Ruperta · 20/02/2015 10:00

We are planning a move from London to Cheshire. I have an image of moving to a semi rural village but it must have at least a pub & a shop! Despite originally being from the north west both myself & my husband have lived in London for so long that we don't know where to focus our property search. DH family live in frodsham so close but not too close would be good (IYKWIM!)

Any recommendations of lovely villages from the wise mumsnetters.

Mickle Trafford is very nice. Some beautiful properties and it has a lovely pub or two as well as a post office and an excellent school. It's also not too "tight" as there have been plenty of incomers....but it retains it's traditional feel.

It's about 3 miles from Chester city centre too.

MrsTawdry · 20/02/2015 10:13

If you want more rural then Tarvin is lovely too.

costumething · 20/02/2015 10:37

Christleton is nice and only a short distance from Chester. You can cycle into town along the canal towpath without having to mix with road traffic. Good secondary school. Not the cheapest area though, what is your budget?

MrsTawdry · 20/02/2015 11:02

It is nice Christelton and of course then you're in catchment for their excellent high school but a friend moved there recently and has found it distinctly unfriendly. Mickle Trafford is also on the Sustrans cycle route. It's extremely pretty in the summer.

Ashley? Between Hale and Knutsford, on the train line, couple of pubs and a newsagent/corner shop.

BallsforEarrings · 20/02/2015 11:57

I used to live in Lymm where I am from, it is pretty and has good links.

Frodsham and Helsby are nice too!

SquinkiesRule · 20/02/2015 12:45

Weaverham, Tarporley, both seem nice

rallytog1 · 20/02/2015 13:32

Tarporley and Tarvin are lovely.

You'd get more for your money in Frodsham or Kingsley though.

rallytog1 · 20/02/2015 13:33

Oh, and Norley, Alvanley, Manley, Ashton and Kelsall are all lovely villages too.

5446 · 20/02/2015 13:40

Tarporley and Tarvin are lovely and also have great schools.

Any of the little villages just outside of Nantwich.

Davenham is nice too.

Allstoppedup · 20/02/2015 13:45

I'm originally from Elton Smellton, I wouldn't recommend it.

Kingsley, Alvanley, Frodsham and Helsby are all lovely though.

MimiSunshine · 20/02/2015 14:17

How about the villages just North of Northwich. It'd be about a 20 min drive from Frodsham but great for M56 / M6 access.

Great Budworth is picture postcard pretty and good food pub. Comberbach is small within walking distance of Budworth Mere and Marbury Park and also has a great food serving pub (there are also a quite a few other pubs which serve food around there and a one that's been changed to a thai so lots of choice).

Or Pickmere, Lower Stretton, Barnton / Anderton. Stockton Heath if you decide you want a bit more than a pub and post office.

BallsforEarrings · 20/02/2015 20:42

Stockton heath is a nightmare to get through traffic wise!

HappyIdiot · 20/02/2015 20:47

I grew up in Stockton Heath, I agree the traffic is bad, also it's got a lot more pubby/clubby lately.

Agree Great budworth is lovely and comberbach too. Appleton thorn is a bit bigger but still villagey.

Dinnerfor1 · 20/02/2015 20:47

Lymm is nice. It's now more like a very large village/small town, but it still has a lovely village centre, with pubs, a butchers, a bakers, some nice cafes etc. It is well connected (if you drive), as it's near the M56 and M6. Also, the traffic isn't anywhere near as bad as Stockton Heath.

paxtecum · 20/02/2015 20:53

Where will you be travelling to for work?

blondiewoowoo1 · 20/02/2015 20:57

Styal is a small village (on the outskirts of Wilmslow) with close access to the motorway but seems very rural too!
Has a shop, cafe and pub and some lovely walks.
Lymm is nice but much bigger and I second Ashley near Hale (also close to motorway)

CheshireDing · 20/02/2015 21:19

We live in Lymm and commute by car to Manchester every day.

We have 2 small children and moved here for the excellent schools and community feel.

Love it.

gobbynorthernbird · 20/02/2015 21:35

I love Lymm, but certainly wouldn't class it as 'semi-rural'.

maddening · 20/02/2015 21:47
