To ask which village to move to in Cheshire

Ruperta · 20/02/2015 10:00

We are planning a move from London to Cheshire. I have an image of moving to a semi rural village but it must have at least a pub & a shop! Despite originally being from the north west both myself & my husband have lived in London for so long that we don't know where to focus our property search. DH family live in frodsham so close but not too close would be good (IYKWIM!)

Any recommendations of lovely villages from the wise mumsnetters.

Thanks ladies for all the suggestions - I think we need to do some exploring. I like Bunbury, tarpoley, tarvin but I have seen on rightmove that for our budget we could probably get more for our money in Davenham.

Quick and probably daft question but how important is religion for school admissions? I've seen that some villages just have CoE primary schools. I know in london you can only get in religious schools if you are religious and can prove attendance at church etc is it the same up north? If the local village school is CoE and we are atheist would it be a problem?

I know I went to the local CoE primary despite my family not being religious but things have probably changed!

A lot of village C of E schools in Cheshire don't have any religious criteria in admissions. They're just community schools with a church ethos.

Great that is good to know, thanks

As rally said village schools tend to be church schools. Davenham is lovely as is Hartford. Good high schools too.

GrimDamnFanjo · 21/02/2015 16:02

Frodsham regularly wins best village awards. It's got lots of shops and amenities.

maddening · 21/02/2015 20:27

Ps davenham is Dave-enham the locals hate it being pronounced like Dagenham

maddening · 21/02/2015 20:29

What is your budget incidentally ?

bonhomme · 21/02/2015 20:31

Hartford traffic is a nightmare too

WhereDoAllTheCalculatorsGo · 21/02/2015 20:37

I'm from Frodsham, hello!
It was a great place to grow up.

Catsize · 21/02/2015 20:39

Tattenhall, Bunbury, Tarporley, Audlem.

Catsize · 21/02/2015 20:42

Frodsham is nice but has quite a bit of traffic and noise from the M56. Also, it isn't semi-rural.
The villages I have suggested have a lot going on socially, great for kids growing up, and have more than one pub!

rallytog1 · 21/02/2015 20:44

If you live in the naice part of Frodsham it's semi-rural Grin

HarrietSchulenberg · 21/02/2015 20:47

If you head further south you've got Audlem and Malpas.

vienna1981 · 21/02/2015 20:47

Alderley Edge.

pieceofpurplesky · 23/02/2015 00:15

Up the hill in Frodsham is semi rural.

pieceofpurplesky · 23/02/2015 00:15

Cross posts rally!

pieceofpurplesky · 23/02/2015 00:16

As the thread hadn't refreshed

westcoastnortherner · 23/02/2015 00:25

Somerford and holmeschapel are nice, what's your price range?

Zhx3 · 23/02/2015 00:56

Where do you need to commute to, OP?

EleanorRigby89 · 23/02/2015 01:19

Check where the proposed HS2 route will be. I'd avoid Ashley for that reason and the sodding planes.

rallytog1 · 23/02/2015 09:28

It must be our flaky phone signal in our semi-rural area Purple Grin

Stinkersmum · 23/02/2015 09:31

Audlem is lovely.

thegreylady · 23/02/2015 09:40

Audlem and Malpas are both very nice and Malpas has great schools both primary and secondary (Bishop Heber) with no religious criteria for entry.

MrsHathaway · 23/02/2015 09:42

Davenham primary is oversubscribed most years I think. Traffic there can be hairy too, in the mornings.

Agree with pps that religion is rarely an issue - unless you're miles from an RC school, which are rarer.

pentaplanet · 05/06/2019 09:23

Elton is a decent place.

Also Betley.

Lovely bigger places are Congleton, Alsager, Chester itself hard to beat.
