On holiday this week in small town that has a lovely old-fashioned sweet shop. We went in at the start of the week and kids bought 100g each of their choice of sweet.

Went back today and we all chose some more. I asked the owner if he liked sweets or if he'd been round them too long.

He replied: 'Oh, no, sweets are terrible for you, they will kill you. It's finny how humans are self-destructive - if it's not drugs or alcohol, they want to kill themselves by eating saturated fat and sugar.'

Then he told us about a 57-stone man who used to come into his shop and spend £60 each week... he was quite disparaging about him.

We were all like Hmm. The kids asked lots of questions along the lines of, why did he say that? Why does he work there if he thinks that?

AIBU?? Should he have kept his feelings to himself?

Well obviously he didn't think you were part of the problem.

Hmm, no, but surely he could just have said, I like mint imperials best, or summat?

Well, we have enough sweets till we go home now so we won't be back. The kids loved it, though...

Some people don't feel the need to lie to spare other peoples feelings/avoid them feeling uncomfortable.

It's an interesting quality but I think it can obviously get you into trouble at times.

Also not everyone loves their job unfortunately. He might bloody hate it but have no choice but to work there/be tied to ownership in some way.

CocktailQueen · 19/02/2015 19:48

Hmm, I guess that's true, Gold. We didn't feel uncomfortable, but it would probably put us off being regular customers... shooting himself in the foot, really.

Maybe it's just a front for his drug empire, perhaps he wanted to put sweet purchasers off, lest he has to go to the cash 'n' carry for more sweetie supplies?

Fairenuff · 19/02/2015 19:56

He's probably sick of being asked if he likes sweets so he makes up different replies to amuse himself.

CocktailQueen · 19/02/2015 19:58

Magimedi - yes! Glad it's not just us... he was chatty the other day!

I used to work in a bakery and never got sick of it, it was wonderful!

corgiology · 19/02/2015 21:48

Maybe he was just trying to put the kids off eating too many sweets by using horror stories?

I'm not sure though :)

debbriana · 19/02/2015 22:01

OMG ! I can't stop laughing.

countessmarkyabitch · 19/02/2015 22:04

I like when people say what they really think. I don't see how it makes him a "nasty old sod".
I would have encouraged the children to see him as an amusing holiday character, and we would have laughed about the oddness of it.

CocktailQueen · 19/02/2015 22:08

Yes, we did, Countess, but then DS asked if he would die from eating sweets, and we had to reassure him...

I would have said yes to my ds, and then cackled maniacally, but I'm evil to my dc's Grin
I think your man sounds hilarious.

ILovePud · 19/02/2015 22:34

Well it's not the best marketing strategy Grin I'd love to see what Alex Polizzi would do with that business.

Lovemycatsandkids · 20/02/2015 09:19

Not sure it's a wise thing to identify a RL person on the internet and disparage them.

Although he sounds a good laugh to me and good on him for being honest.

hackmum · 20/02/2015 09:22

Are you sure he was the owner and not someone who just worked there?

It is quite funny, though. Can't help wondering if it's a profession he now regrets entering.

MinceSpy · 20/02/2015 09:25

As this man has been clearly identified this post should be deleted.

GlitzAndGigglesx · 20/02/2015 09:27

I found it quite funny tbh and that obese guy was keeping him in business as are you

Laquitar · 20/02/2015 10:05

Maybe he had customers who said things like ' only one sweet darling, we dont eat sugar, you have some pumkin seeds in your rucksack' so he was taking the mick?

EmmaJacksonHarley · 20/02/2015 12:19

He is a nasty old sod though! Who says stuff like that to a CHILD?

NobodyLivesHere · 20/02/2015 12:22

Hahaha!! I'd have laughed my head off.
