On holiday this week in small town that has a lovely old-fashioned sweet shop. We went in at the start of the week and kids bought 100g each of their choice of sweet.

Went back today and we all chose some more. I asked the owner if he liked sweets or if he'd been round them too long.

He replied: 'Oh, no, sweets are terrible for you, they will kill you. It's finny how humans are self-destructive - if it's not drugs or alcohol, they want to kill themselves by eating saturated fat and sugar.'

Then he told us about a 57-stone man who used to come into his shop and spend £60 each week... he was quite disparaging about him.

We were all like Hmm. The kids asked lots of questions along the lines of, why did he say that? Why does he work there if he thinks that?

AIBU?? Should he have kept his feelings to himself?

Mmmmm....100g of sweets yum! Well he didn't put me off! :) I would have laughed all the way back to the car!!

I bet he used to answer 'Liquorice is my favourite! I love this job, I get to eat sweets all day long' and then some annoyed parents got huffy because their children became convinced that it's OK to live off sweets and their only ambition will be to become a sweet shop owner. He probably got told off by an angry parent so now he gravely discourages children from eating too many.

Fairenuff · 20/02/2015 13:45

He is on a mission to banish sugar from children's diets and has infiltrated the sweet industry to influence from the inside. He probably wears a padded suit as his undercover disguise to make it look like he's gained weight through eating pineapple chunks or something.

  • I haven't said anything untrue... There could be plenty of people who work in that shop. There could be more than one sweet shop. Don't think the thread needs to be deleted??

Also, it's got a food hygiene rating of 2. A far better reason to not return!

CocktailQueen · 20/02/2015 20:35

Eek! Didn't even think about the food hygiene rating - didn't know sweet shops had them. Argh....

Ok, it may be identifiable, but it's not libellous...

Cocktail I'm not suggesting you have been untruthful but other mumsnetters have realised who the shop and man are. MN and posters have got into trouble for this before.
