AIBU to think MN should ban grammar and spelling pedantry on all forums except the one explicitly for this purpose.
It is so F*cking tedious!

Queiro, I don't correct parents. I never said I did. Honestly, you just read what you want to. Reading accurately is another key literacy skill. Smile

I am off to the shops with DS and DH. I await more flaming on my return.

Behindthepaintedgarden · 18/02/2015 13:58

Where are all these 'anti grammar' posters? I haven't seen any?

emotionsecho · 18/02/2015 13:58

They are not being nasty to you Lulu they are merely judging you as you judge others, it appears you don't like being on the receiving end so have proved the point as to why it is unnecessary and unacceptable.

Palehorse · 18/02/2015 13:58

what's really F*king tedious is posters who fill their Fking posts with F*king asterisks!
You're thinking FUCK, you're essentially typing FUCK, i know you mean FUCK....so just Fucking type Fuck, for fucks sake.

Really Confused. Posters who are opposed to grammar?

bruffin · 18/02/2015 14:02

Lois I agree there is no need to be rude about it Grin

Ohfourfoxache · 18/02/2015 14:04

But the point is, Lulu, that they're not being nasty - they have simply stated that there are errors and that it's rather ironic. The fact is that they don't care that there are errors - it doesn't matter. What matters is the content of someone's posts, not how brilliantly that post is constructed.

Fwiw I've been in some very, very dark places in my life. I've never posted about them at the time. If I posted something and I'd had constant corrections and comments like the poster last night then, without exaggeration, they would probably have prompted me to do something stupid. I don't have a problem with posters trying to be helpful if that is what they're really doing, but the picky, hateful, pedantic "I'm better than you" attitude that comes across absolutely fucking stinks.

Last night's poster is not going through an easy time at all. Honestly? I hope all the pedants on her thread are fucking proud of themselves, because they will have undoubtedly made someone else's life that little bit worse just so they could bolster their own over inflated egos for a while.

And don't tell me "it's only a forum - get a grip". Yes, it's only a forum - so surely people can use a little common sense and NOT post inflammatory, hurtful, corrective comments. Just leave it alone.

emotionsecho · 18/02/2015 14:05

Lulu I was commenting on your use of the phrase, perhaps you need to brush up on your accurate reading and comprehension skills.

Quiero · 18/02/2015 14:09

Lulu I wasn't being nasty, I was pointing out that it would be nasty if I were to correct your mistakes as you were so vociferously advocating.

Your argument is that it's acceptable to correct poster's grammar. You backed up that argument by saying its necessary to do so because of how important literacy skills are.

You then show yourself to have poor literacy skills but continue to say how important literacy skills are and yet again employ the use of a nice passive aggressive smiley face.

I don't want to be nasty or attack you. I bet you're a lovely person and a great teacher but your argument just doesn't stand up in this instance.

Have a nice day Smile

Belindabelle · 18/02/2015 14:09

I came on to say much the same as ovaryhill.

There will be people lurking who desperately need help and advice but are afraid to post incase their grammar or spelling gets criticised. My grammar and spelling are atrocious but I have the skin of a rhinoceros so the sanctimonious twats can go swivel. But others are more sensitive and having some anonymous pedantic prick pick their post appart is probably enough to send them over the edge. So they don't post, they remain silent and miserable and missout on the wonderful help and advice just in case their grammatical shortcomings offend.

Shame.

LuluJakey1 · 18/02/2015 14:16

emotionsecho I haven't judged anyone! I have said:

a) We are all judged by our literacy and numeracy skills. It is a fact;
b) We all make mistakes; typos, laziness, rushing, not knowing;
c) I don't think pointing out mistakes that are not typos is so terrible;
d) I don't think anyone needs to point our any error that has already been pointed out;
e) Anyone who finds literacy hard has my sympathy;
f) I see numbers of parents with very poor literacy skills and they are often ashamed by them;
g) I have had my own pointed out to me and I have taught myself - clearly not well enough Smile ;
h) Anyone who does point out errors should do it kindly- no need for sneering or nastiness;
i) I am certainly not perfect and I am happy to learn from others.

Not sure what I have said in all of that which is so contentious or why I have been deemed worthy of the nasties.

Quiero · 18/02/2015 14:19

I was pulled up on my grammar a few years ago and I felt really stupid. I'm quite thick skinned generally but I certainly felt I couldn't continue on the thread.

Sometimes when threads were moving fast I couldn't keep up because I'd have to check, and recheck posts before sending. It's just so daft.

Mintyy · 18/02/2015 14:20

But what nasties Lulu?

elQuintoConyo · 18/02/2015 14:21

Some dick one chipped into a thread I'd started just to comment on a grammar mistake. I told them to fuck of.

KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 18/02/2015 14:23

Quickly skimmed the thread.
I'm a grammar pedant. I've been corrected before.
Meh.

Behindthepaintedgarden · 18/02/2015 14:24

I agree. What nasties?

The point I am making is that we shouldn't judge people on a chat forum by their spelling and grammar. In an exam or on a job application then yes, that's fair enough.

But this is a forum where people come for advice, light hearted chat, or to argue exchange views on various issues. Spelling and grammar don't come into it and you can really upset/humiliate/irritate posters by interrupting a thread to point out that they've spelled a word incorrectly or whatever. It just doesn't make such posters come across well.

I'm not saying that you have done it, but you have supported the concept. At the same time you are understandably annoyed and upset at posters going on about your posts. Because it is annoying and upsetting when people do that.

anothernumberone · 18/02/2015 14:25

Lulu you are advocating correcting spellings and grammar on a forum that is designed for fun and support. That is why people disagree with you. People are picking apart your posts because, I believe, in their view you are defending the indefensible.

Mintyy · 18/02/2015 14:25

Oh blimey, that thread last night is a disgrace.

Agree with whoever said it earlier, I'm going to start reporting those comments. They should be deleted.

anothernumberone · 18/02/2015 14:27

Yes Mintyy I am too

MargotLovedTom · 18/02/2015 14:28

So where does everyone stand on text speak?

Behindthepaintedgarden · 18/02/2015 14:28

When I said 'it doesn't make such posters come across well' I meant the correcting posters, not the posters being corrected.

Belindabelle · 18/02/2015 14:31

If we are not careful this site will only attract the eloquent educated elite or pedantic twats as I like to call them. The normal mortals will have to fuck off to a place where we can make typos, split infinitives and mis use the apostrophe without being in fear.
