AIBU to think MN should ban grammar and spelling pedantry on all forums except the one explicitly for this purpose.
It is so F*cking tedious!

OP posts:
MetallicBeige · 18/02/2015 11:02

Flowers Dixie.
You're right Like it's almost a sneery humour, very Mean Girls, without the charm.

MerryInthechelseahotel · 18/02/2015 11:03

I hope you told your ipad you find it tedious trying to decipher what it means when its spelling and grammar is shite pag

MerryInthechelseahotel · 18/02/2015 11:04

Thanks Dixie

Pagwatch · 18/02/2015 11:05

Nah, it's fine.
If I can't read it I just move on. Like a proper grown up.

Pagwatch · 18/02/2015 11:05

That's so shitty Dixie.

GoringBit · 18/02/2015 11:13

I had a job where I checked and approved (or not) marketing material, so I tend to pick up on spelling and grammar mistakes, but I'd no more pick apart a post here than fly. What's the point? It's rude and unnecessary.

I struggle to read large blocks of text, so I avoid posts that aren't in paragraphs, but again, why would I comment? I just leave the thread alone.

We all express ourselves differently, and to belittle someone in this way is rude and hostile - and sorry, but I (silently) judge the person criticising.

Stinkle · 18/02/2015 11:14

YANBU!

I don't think I've ever come across a thread that had such poor spelling and grammar I haven't been able to work out the gist of it.

It doesn't make the corrector look as clever as they think it does

MrsTawdry · 18/02/2015 11:15

YABU and as for it being "bad manners" it's the opposite. I am always happy to be corrected. Why? Because it means I've learned something. Why is it bad manners to offer information? Knowledge?

It isn't.

Mn may be a "lifeline" and a safe and friendly place...and people treasure it for those things but others treasure it because it's got a higher than average quota of people who write well....and the conversation can be very enlightening and intelligent.

I treasure THAT aspect of it. So I'm happy that people keep on top of the lazy grammar and yes...the ignorance...writing "of" instead of "have" is annoying and I'd rather people were told not to and why.

And I am also happy to be corrected when I make mistakes.

I don't want a site where the conversation consists of "Should I of gone without him to the pty? etc.

MerryInthechelseahotel · 18/02/2015 11:20

Because it is usually done in a sarcastic way mrstawdry and not just once but again and again, that's why.

MrsTawdry · 18/02/2015 11:20

Confused of course you can. Why? Who was rude? On the thread the OP mentions?

Let's not confuse being on top of grammar with being rude then.

MrsTawdry · 18/02/2015 11:21

Merry usually? I don;t know about that.

People usually write something simple like..."It's have not of"

But people bristle instantly because they don't LIKE being corrected.

Pagwatch · 18/02/2015 11:22

It is massively ill mannered to turn up on a thread and post an unsolicited correction.

It's never done as an offering of education. It's done as a smug put down and then repeated ad nauseum .

If you enjoy being corrected and learning you can pop over to pedants corner or find a website where ignoring the thrust of a post to nit pick over spelling is deemed ok.

Pagwatch · 18/02/2015 11:22

They certainly don't like having their appalling manners pointed out. That's true.

This is why it is bad manners:

If a friend said to you: 'I'm having really serious issues with my DH. I should OF told you before, but its been really hard, we WAS always in company and I found it really hard to talk about...' etc

Would you respond with: 'Actually, I think you'll find that it is 'should HAVE' and 'we WERE!'???? Shock

No, you wouldn't! It makes you look like a twat, doesn't it? So why do it on a forum that isn't about grammar and spelling, and where people aren't asking for an English lesson?

I'm a teacher. I correct spelling and grammar for a living. I wouldn't DREAM of doing it on MN. It shows a really poor sense of judgement (and, may I add, makes the 'corrector' look a bit dim, like they just learned correct grammar yesterday and want to show off to the world about it Hmm).

Gileswithachainsaw · 18/02/2015 11:23

Yanbu. Most of us can work out what is meant without getting hung up on typos.

Firesidetreat · 18/02/2015 11:23

Posting the word HAVE HAVE HAVE over and over again is rude.

I don't want a site full of tedious pedants.

There was a thread on here yesterday in which every post by the OP had 'of' instead of 'have'. That's the only thing about it I can remember today, I haven't a clue what it was about.

Even though this error in particular drives me nuts, I wouldn't point it out to a poster.

Pagwatch · 18/02/2015 11:24

Funnily enough, in spite of my poor grammar and worse spelling, I rarely get corrected.

It's because they only pick on certain posters.usually those they sense are unable to defend themselves.

MrsTawdry · 18/02/2015 11:25

Dixie I am talking generally. As was the OP....

Strange ....having a conversation in rl is very different to chatting on the internet....but I personally would not correct someone when the post was emotional.

Pagwatch · 18/02/2015 11:25
