AIBU to think MN should ban grammar and spelling pedantry on all forums except the one explicitly for this purpose.
It is so F*cking tedious!

OP posts:

"Why do people get so annoyed on other people's behalf anyway?"

Personally I can't stand to see somebody being torn to pieces over something which a) might not be their fault, b) doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things, c) if somebody doesn't say something this site will be overrun with twats who think that picking somebody apart for their posting style is fair game.

Pagwatch · 18/02/2015 10:20

Olbasaddict

Because this is a place where people come for company and support.
Posturing and being superior on the grounds of someone's intellect of education is unnecessary.

And can we stop pretending it's some kind of altruistic act. The have have have ! comments are designed solely to embarrass the op and give the poster a few seconds joy as they hug themselves with impinged superiority.

Knowing plenty of people with moderate to sever learning difficulties I will stick up for anyone being mocked for no reason.

Also. It's a site for adults do if someone is choosing to behave like a cunt I will happily say so.

LikeIcan · 18/02/2015 10:20

I don't actually mind be corrected tbh, if it's done in a helpful way.
I'm always unsure whether it's 'affect' or 'effect', & I'll put commas in willy nilly & just hope for the best ( same with apostrophes )

I need help Grin

Methe · 18/02/2015 10:20

Pagwatch

*It's thick, dumb fuck, ill mannered and oafish to correct grammar or spelling on a thread.

Thick people who don't know how to behave*

^what she said..

MN is a lifeline to many people. So many people are lonely and isolated. I think it's tragic that someone wanting to be part of this community will be hounded out if their literacy isn't the best. There are hundreds/thousands of threads on here every single day. If one particular one offends your sensibilities ignore it and move on to one that doesn't.

I didn't even notice that Like (skim reader).

You say you wouldn't mind being corrected, how would you feel if every post was a correction and your initial query/problem was completely ignored in favour of pointing out how very WRONG and WRONG you are?

I think that is the current problem on some threads. Too many people desperate to show how clever they are, and going the extra mile to shame the op under the guise of 'helping'.

When my foster child leaves home I would like to be encouraging her to use mumsnet for advice (obviously she can call me too). It really is so helpful to be able to ask anything and usually get answers but her grammar is not brilliant due to years of neglect as a young child. I would hate her to get mocked. She's quite timid and it would put her off posting. Nobody knows people's background or circumstances. If you really need a pat on the back for knowing it is have instead of of you need to get a life.

So all you pedantic posters with a mean streak just back off. If I can do it with both my parents primary teachers and siblings either authors or English teachers so can you.

Pagwatch · 18/02/2015 10:41

I particularly enjoy that when they called out on the fact that posting sarcastic and unwanted corrections is just fucking rude and ill mannered, they get mightily pissy.

So clearly not always fans of people being corrected on threads then ....

NaiceVillageOfTheDammed · 18/02/2015 10:44

As long as I can understand your thread, write as you please.

Cantbelievethisishappening · 18/02/2015 10:47

YANBU
I hate seeing it.
Just smacks of smug self importance and tragic nit picking.
I wish these people would just fuck off. Hmm
I often wonder when someone has been publicly shamed by these twats are they then going to worry about posting again.

MerryInthechelseahotel · 18/02/2015 10:48

I like you pagwatch Grin

MetallicBeige · 18/02/2015 10:49

I'm under the impression that some of the main culprits have only recently realised it's 'have' and not 'of' themselves. It has been so discussed so prevalently on MN in recent months.
Like evangelical ex smokers, they are keen to distance themselves from past 'crimes' so busily push their boring agenda wherever they can, looking around for affirmation and back pats as they go.

That's just my opinion of course, and pedants, I said some. :)

Behindthepaintedgarden · 18/02/2015 10:49

I honestly don't understand the mentality of anyone who would come onto a chat forum and start correcting posters' grammar.
Do they go up to people in real life and interrupt a conversation to correct their pronunciation?
If not, why do they think it's any less rude to do it during an internet conversation? I have a degree in English and write for a living. It doesn't stop me sometimes typing there instead of their, or forgetting to put in an apostrophe now and again. I couldn't care less if other people do it either, and I don't want some twat plodding onto the thread to point out my errors.
Just go away. I'd rather someone was a poor speller than a rude, arrogant perfectionist.

LikeIcan · 18/02/2015 10:49

Metallic if I posted for support & was being corrected for spelling etc, I'd be devastated - but I've honestly never seen that happen. But yes, if I was being pulled up all the time on lighthearted threads it would upset me.

Pagwatch · 18/02/2015 10:51

Well thank you. Although I was aiming for imagined superiority but my iPad is a bit of a knob

Grin

I just hate the idea that some poor soul turns up here looking to make a connection and their first response is a tidal wave of knobbery.

It's so very unkind.
What's the matter with people?

MetallicBeige · 18/02/2015 10:53

Unfortunately it does happen, I have seen it Like, I remember a poster who was obviously in distress and just needed to splurge her words out, to share, to get advice. In her haste she didn't paragraph the post so it was a block of text.

Did she get support? Off the normal people yes. However, the first few posts were all "my eyes", "I can't read that op", "OMG PARAGRAPHS OP!!" And on it went. Totally pathetic, unhelpful and quite horrible to see.
