When it only takes a minute to mix an egg with some flour and milk?

OP posts:
HellonHeels · 12/02/2015 20:26

I like cooking from scratch but I don't give a toss (see what I did there?) if someone wants to save themselves some time and effort and buy a mix.

Any tips on getting over my fear of actually flipping the things?,

ChocolateCherry · 12/02/2015 20:27

Re flour, I never keep it. I just buy a small bag fig I want to make something, but if I haven't used whatever's left within a couple of weeks I throw it out.

ChocolateCherry · 12/02/2015 20:29

'If' not 'Fig'! Confused

queencori · 12/02/2015 20:31

I've never made Yorkshire puds

DontDrinkandFacebook · 12/02/2015 20:31

ok fair enough Sisters that is justification enough.

usualsuspect333 · 12/02/2015 20:33

I think I can afford 15p.

You add water and an egg.

Threeboysandus · 12/02/2015 20:36

I normally make my own pancakes but saw the ready mixed one last week on sale for €2 and thought feck it..they tasted the exact same and there was no clean up. Flour always ends up everywhere. Was woth the extra money for a treat.

HairyOrk · 12/02/2015 21:00

I find the ready mix harder!

It's still floury so makes a mess and you have to measure out the water.

Stick flour, an egg and milk in a bowl and mix. Add more flour or milk until you get the right consistency. Done!

HairyOrk · 12/02/2015 21:01

Oh, if anyone wants a top pancake tip (I make them for a living Wink) make the mix and then leave it for a few hours before cooking.
Tastes waaaay better.
And go easy on the eggs.

So good I'll post it twice Blush

ProcessYellowC · 12/02/2015 21:11

this thread is brilliant - Sauvignonblanche Grin

Yeah I wouldn't buy the premixed batter if DH didn't already make them - I'd go ready-made all the way Grin

Prefer scotch pancakes anyway

unlucky83 · 12/02/2015 21:20

Confession time - I'm a former chef - and I've been really tempted to buy frozen onions Blush
I recently bought frozen mash for the first time - just for emergencies - then I had lots of time, looked at the bag of tiny (sprouting) potatoes that needed peeling and got the packet out the freezer...
I batch cook and freeze chilli and bolognaise.
I used to blend and sieve tinned tomatoes for it - now I just buy passata in cartons ...
I grow all the right herbs in the garden (bar basil I always manage to kill) I used to go out and gather the marjoram and thyme, wash and chop it...then I started doing loads, starting it off in the blender, finishing by hand chopping and freezing - last time I used dried....

Onions I used to finely dice by hand - now I stick them in the food processor ...but actually I never thought about freezing my own - might do lots in the blender whilst I've got it out and freeze...(and by next year I so know I'll be buying frozen won't I...)
I have no excuses -just pure laziness...
(Still can't imagine buying pancake batter mix...but give me time...)

IgnoreMeEveryOtherReindeerDoes · 12/02/2015 21:20

I've got flour in cupboard its been there months should I be worried about bugs? I have an irrational fear of Beatles

Its sitting next to the packet of Betty crockers pancake mix

CeliaLytton · 12/02/2015 21:23

These threads always make me want to ask the OP why she doesn't mill her own flour, rear her own chickens and milk her own cows, is it just laziness? The convenience of having all these products produced, processed, packaged up ready to use?

But I'm always a bit afraid the OP will come back and say she does do all these things Grin

QueenFuri · 12/02/2015 21:23

I can mix a batter but can't for the life if me cook a pancake. The kids and DP have banned me from pancake making on tbe grounds they are disgusting!

Panzee · 12/02/2015 21:27

I buy it to annoy you. :o

iklboo · 12/02/2015 21:32

We go to the local pancake restaurant. So nerrrrr Grin

MissYamabuki · 12/02/2015 21:43

With pancakes the faff is not making the batter but cooking them! Making the batter is about as much trouble as having a bowl of cereal.

But each to their own. I hate the buggers anyway and I've almost persuaded DP & DD that pancake day was day before yesterday

Queenlizandabottleofgin · 12/02/2015 21:44

FLOUR WEAVILS ???!!!

What the fuck are they Shock

icelollycraving · 12/02/2015 21:47

They are the devil's spawn. They can eat through pretty much all dried stuff. They'd got into everything. They can crawl into teeny tiny crevices in your cupboards.

Queenlizandabottleofgin · 12/02/2015 21:50

How small are they?? I'm currently staring at a bowl of plain flour that's been in there a while ?

icelollycraving · 12/02/2015 21:53

Tiny. Google it,I would but I'm lazy & haven't ever done links despite being on here for a while. They are browny black so easy to spot in flour/sugar etc.

Showy · 12/02/2015 21:56

I will nip round tomorrow and tell my 89yo arthritic grandma that the things keeping her independent and in her own home - pre-grated, pre-chopped, pre-mixed etc - are now banned by the Harridan Court of MN.

IgnoreMeEveryOtherReindeerDoes · 12/02/2015 21:59

Shit I've googled it, I'm going to chuck the flour away tmrw I'm too scared to look tonight.

Another advantage of ready mix no fucking flour weevils
