To wonder why on earth people buy ready mixed pancake batter

When it only takes a minute to mix an egg with some flour and milk?

But *Kaekae you don't hae to keep making the batter up time and again. It keeps for days and days in a jug in the fridge.

Seriously I'm all for convenience I really am but this does puzzle me too

Royalsighness · 12/02/2015 18:49

I can't believe some people use instant coffee rather than percolating their own freshly ground stuff. Philistines! (Sits and looks smug with bowl of quinoa)

ragged · 12/02/2015 18:51

I didn't used to know it was so easy to make, sorry! When friend showed me I couldn't believe it was so simple. We never made it from mix or scratch when I was growing up, though, only something to eat when out. I still have relatives who are confused that it's so easy to make. But then they seem to want some optimal blend of vanilla & other things in there I don't like anyway.

Premix pancakes taste weird, lots of sugar, maybe? I dunno.

unlucky83 · 12/02/2015 18:51

Never found weevils - had to google - but lots of images there of things like moth and carpet beetle larvae in flour too-Confused
I did however have some teeny tiny little bugs - they looked like grains of flour - this was in my bread flour that had sat there (in the paper bag) for at least 6 yrs...honestly I was quite relieved- good excuse to get rid of it without guilt ...
I also struggle to see why someone would buy pancake mix ...
2 eggs and about half a pint of milk, whisk together and then gradually add flour till it seems like the right thickness (ideally make it a bit thick then add a drop of water) ... make extra if the oven is on and make some yorkies for the freezer at the same time. Its a bowl and a whisk...and gives DCs something to do...feel involved....but can see the attraction in that the bottle stuff is zero washing up.
Then again in this house we have pancakes quite a lot ... DP is a french chef, I'm an ex chef so find them dead easy as a pudding (my favourite nutella and good vanilla ice cream ...actually tempted to head into the kitchen now to knock some up ...Blush)

AIBU to wonder why on earth people start this same thread every year?
I'm sure it's a couple of days early this year. Hmm

ihave2naughtydogs · 12/02/2015 18:56

No i dont eat pancakes, I am vegan .kids eat them though. The shells and slime make me feel ill Grin

HandMini · 12/02/2015 18:58

I love the American pancake ready mix from Ocado. Cant remember the brand. Mm, pancakes. I buy the ready mix because I'm a lazy feckless rich full-time working parent.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 12/02/2015 19:00

I'm with you op. Not really sure why anyone would need the packet version although I am sold on using it when camping

I could knock up a batch of pancakes when I was 10.

Ketchuphidestheburntbits · 12/02/2015 19:01

I buy the ready made pancakes because I can't even get the mix right let alone making them from scratch. My last attempt nearly burnt down my kitchen! I really can't cook so it's safer for everyone if I don't try.

Are weevils the little brown creatures currently living in my bag of flour in the cupboard? Perhaps it's time to throw it out then!

Spatial · 12/02/2015 19:01

I've always made them from scratch but bought the Betty Crocker premixed one to try this year. It was expensive and only makes 6.

I think I will try a blind taste test and see which they prefer.

Sleepyfergus · 12/02/2015 19:04

Oooh, I could whip up a batch of pancakes when I was a few minutes old, blindfolded, AND with one arm ties behind my back.

We get it, it's dead easy to do from fresh. But so is turning on the tap, shaking the bottle and pouring into the frying pan. Minimal washing up too.

ArcheryAnnie · 12/02/2015 19:04

ihave2naughtydogs being vegan needn't mean no pancakes! I've make them very successfully with soya milk and flour, no eggs at all. Just make sure you leave the batter to sit for at least half an hour.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 12/02/2015 19:08

I often make pancakes from scratch and agree it's quick and easy but this year I've bought a packet mix, I will be 35 weeks pregnant and can't be arsed to stand and weigh/mix the ingredients when I can add water and shake.

Imo they taste the same once covered on lemon/sugar/Nutella etc

Purplepoodle · 12/02/2015 19:10

I'm even worse. I buy ready made pancakes.

Royalsighness · 12/02/2015 19:10

ihave2naughtydogs · 12/02/2015 19:10

Thanks for the tip Annie, I might have a go!I usually just eat the syrup from the tin while the kids eat the pancakes Grin

AmIUsingMadeUpWords · 12/02/2015 19:11

I make pancakes all the time, they are almost unbelievably quick and easy.

But sometimes I just buy a packet of ready made ones and heat them up - sue me.

I can make cookies in a few minutes too, or shortbread, or pizza, or fairy cakes, or pesto or mayonaise - those are all quick and easy things, especially if you are used to making them often.
But I still like to buy ready made ones too.
Just because sometimes I can't be bothered even with something quick and easy.
Sometimes I even buy pre-peeled carrots and pre-cooked mashed potato.
I'm not doing it because I don't know how to peel a carrot - and I am aware that it is more cost effective to buy raw potatoes and unpeeled carrots, and that peeling carrots isn't exactly hard anyway. But it's my money, and my time, and my digestive system - and I'll do it if I want to!

CaptainAnkles · 12/02/2015 19:12

People weigh and measure batter ingredients? I put however much flour looks enough into the blender with an egg and some milk and mix it up, chucking a bit more milk in until it looks alright. I only weigh ingredients when making proper cakes.

HollyBdenum · 12/02/2015 19:13

In my case, because they have morning sickness and vomit whenever the fridge door is open or when able to see or smell raw eggs or milk. Ready made mix meant the children could have pancakes on Shrove Tuesday that year with only minimal vomiting breaks. (DP was unable to make pancakes as he had burnt his hand badly and was swathed in bandages and couldn't hold anything, let alone crack an egg). Mother's Day fell in that week, too. It was miserable.

SistersOfPercy · 12/02/2015 19:14

Who cares? I buy frozen onions, I've never looked back since!
I make my own batter as I usually have flour in, but for some folk it's convenient.

HandMini · 12/02/2015 19:16

Enough reasons yet, OP? Wink

DontDrinkandFacebook · 12/02/2015 19:21

I actually can't believe people buy frozen onions. You can chop and freeze your own for frying out loud.

SauvignonBlanche · 12/02/2015 19:24

I heard some people buy bread, it's so easy to make your own.

Parker231 · 12/02/2015 19:26

We don't have flour in the house - always buy the ready made pancakes from M&S - lovely every time and only 30 seconds in the microwave !

ArcheryAnnie · 12/02/2015 19:27

I'm a terrible, terrible cook with a fondness for eg, instant mash (and regular mash), but I make my own batter. I don't weigh anything, just slosh some soya milk into a jug, add a couple of eggs, and add spoonfuls of flour until it looks vaguely the right thickness.

If I want English pancakes then I will cook as is.

If I want thick American pancakes I will add another spoonful of flour, a teaspoon of baking powder, then cook.

Whether you do premade or not, always wait half an hour after mixing before cooking!
