This really annoys me and I can't work out why.

OP posts:
neolara · 12/02/2015 18:41

My mum calls them brooks.

Panties - bleugh!

CharityD · 12/02/2015 18:43

does remind me though of our nurse at our surgery and after a smear she always says "Pop your panties back on and I will see you in a mo" as she goes the other side of the curtain to protect my modesty WHEN SHE HAS JUST LOOKED IN MY FANGOLINA

Can't stop laughing, how true!

Anything but 'panties', I hate that word!

Mousefinkle · 12/02/2015 18:54

My DGM says bloomers which I quite like Grin. It's definitely knickers here and boxers for men.

Perhaps a regional thing, not sure. I'm in yorkshire. Pants/panties seems so American.

Pants Pants always Pants, (except when they are knickers) Smile

Minshu · 12/02/2015 19:09

No one seems to us the word "briefs", which is how they are sometimes labelled as in shops. I use the terms knickers and pants interchangeably, with the occasional knicky-knacky-noos (when talking to DD) Blush

thegreylady · 12/02/2015 19:09

My dh calls his underpants 'knickers' and I use the same word for mine. Still we are old so that's ok :)

Jakadaal · 12/02/2015 19:10

Definitely pants - Knicks makes me heave!

CalamitouslyWrong · 12/02/2015 19:14

Mine have always been pants.

DH and the DSes boxers are also pants.

There are lots of different kinds of pants. Knickers are just one type.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 12/02/2015 19:16

My mum called them pants, so that's what I call them.

We could always go back to calling them drawers.

CalamitouslyWrong · 12/02/2015 19:18

My dad always referred to them as his drawers.

mumeeee · 12/02/2015 19:21

YABU. I don't like the word knickers so it's always pants for me. That's what my Mum calls them

Theoretician · 12/02/2015 19:32

When I was growing up abroad pants were trousers, underneath which a boy wore underpants and a girl panties.

As a boy, I never actually had cause to actually say panties and as an adult living in the UK I can't bring myself to say it. DD went to a nursery, and I've adopted the word the nursery workers used, which was "knickers." Previously thought it was a somewhat comical word, but now quite like it.

mrsdicaprio · 12/02/2015 19:36

Yabu. They are called pants. Everyone calls them pants.

Theoretician · 12/02/2015 19:55

I can settle this argument, I've had a brainwave. Went to M&S web site, and the relevant section is labelled ...

Knickers!

Theoretician · 12/02/2015 19:58

On a similar note, though a year late for the last thread about "toilet" versus "lavatory" versus (word I can't bring myself to type), I was going through a major airport the next day and the relevant signs said...

toilet!

leedy · 12/02/2015 19:59

I think "briefs" sounds nearly as bad as "pies.

redautumnleaves · 12/02/2015 20:02

I also think bloomers is the way to go.
For those of you who are team pants - you are wrong!

mommy2ash · 12/02/2015 20:08

they are called neenees here for some unknown reason. i think my mom started with that when my dd was potty training and it somehow stuck.

i don't have to talk about underwear with anyone but her so i guess the only other word that i would use is underwear.

Honsandrevels · 12/02/2015 20:09

I feel really annoyed when I hear people say pants for knickers because they are WRONG.

Pants are slacks or trousers
Underpants - the clue is in the name, go UNDER pants aka trousers.
Knickers are knickers.

KNICKERS.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 12/02/2015 20:12

I hate the word knickers. Knicks actually makes me shudder. (As an aside, the only other phrase that does this to me is 'picky bits' for a snack tea/snacks at a party).

I use pants. I wear pants. My girls wear pants.

Varya · 12/02/2015 20:15

Panties - can I hear you scream!

Bambambini · 12/02/2015 20:19

My Irish friend always calls trousers pants. Always takes me a second to think what she means. So what do irish folk call pants then?

leedy · 12/02/2015 20:23

I am Irish and I call trousers trousers and pants pants! Maybe it's a regional thing...

BertieBotts · 12/02/2015 20:24

I feel I ought to add an instructional song that my sister and I made up when we were eight and ten.

(To the tune of the Blue Peter theme tune circa late 90s)

Knickers aaaaaare very-very pink
A-and pa-ants a-are always blue
You don't re-ally have to think
To find out whether they are pink or blu-u-u-u-ue

'Cause
Knickers aaaaaare very-very pink
A-and pa-ants a-are always blue
You have to pull them down when you are go-ing to the loo
Oh!
Knickers, they are veryvery pink
Pants - blue!
