To think that women's knickers are not called pants?

This really annoys me and I can't work out why.

Yeah -like I wear socks - pretty similar concept to a blokes socks - but I wouldn't call them 'sockies'

Well the french apparently call them culottes

Panties is an awful word and gives me the heebie jeebies.

It's knickers in our house or 'keks' if I want to gross out 10 yr old DD2.

From Lancashire and round here pants is a colloquial word for trousers. I only use trousers in a formal or professional setting. Women wear knickers and men wear boxers or underpants.

I've never ever called knickers pants. Where I come from pants were men's trousers. Knickers is the correct word. Can't see what's wrong with the word.

Don't like pants but panties is far, far worse.

The dreaded term has been mentioned far too much already.....my skins crawling, it reminds me of being a child in the 1970's and my DM always calling them p*ies.

Hi Boozey-Lancashire here too and pants are trousers-have modified this in my new environment and now use "trousers" for outerwear but it feels wrong!

I'm from Merseyside and always used pants for trousers. Had much confusion when I moved South and wondered why I got a strange reaction when I told someone I liked their pants!

I too am from Merseyside and elicited much amusement when I moved down here and called trousers pants. Apparently (based on my working with the grand total of one Cornishman), they do in Cornwall too. I say keks for trousers as well, which someone else upthread uses for knickers too, so there's nothing down for me!

Knickers are women's underwear, underpants are men's.

DD calls knickers 'nins'. I have no idea where this has come from (we live in East London), but again, it's only for women's underwear.

Why are pants for boys and not girls? Pants are bikini style briefs. Same style for boys, as for girls. Worn by either sex.
