We're trying to think of a name for our new daughter and I want to find one that is actually fun/useful to have rather than one that we like but is horrible to actually be called.

ourglass · 03/02/2015 16:18

My name is Olivia. I like it. Way too popular now though, wasn't when I was at school yonks ago.

Strokethefurrywall · 03/02/2015 16:19

I don't mind my name - Natalie.

It's popular without being too overused so I'm not driven to despair hearing it all the time! If I hear of someone calling their baby Natalie, I always think "oh such a sweet name!" - not sure why!

My nickname has always been Nat.... never Nats (stab emoticon)

fluffyraggies · 03/02/2015 16:26

I love the name Emma :)

I also love the name Amber. It is my DD2s 2nd name. My mother was very against it, banging on about some book written in the 40s about a 'woman with no morals', called Amber. Hmm FGS

My name is ok, but i am forever having to spell it or correct it. And it's only 4 bloomin letters! It's Sara.

auntynorm · 03/02/2015 16:35

I love my name; it was relatively uncommon when i was little (it's naomi) but more popular now (although lots of 'unique'spellings of it). However it's not easy to shorten to anything other than na which my df hated. I've chosen another biblical name for my ds but one with lots of nice shorter variations if he wants to when hes he's older).

leedy · 03/02/2015 16:43

I like mine (it's Lisa), not too long, most people can spell it, there weren't a million of them in my peer group (though I think there would have been if I'd been born at the same time in the US).

Main top tip: GIVE YOUR CHILD THE NAME YOU'RE GOING TO CALL THEM AND NOT SOME VARIANT THEREOF. My parents called me Elizabeth after my grandmother but then decided to use Lisa for short, as they liked the name and the family already had about a billion Elizabeth/Liz/Betty/Beth variants. This has caused no end of hilarity with half my documents being in my full name and half in the one I actually use. I now have a passport as Lisa Mysurname with "the bearer was registered at birth as Elizabeth Mysurname" and I still end up with "your ID doesn't have the same name as your bank account" shenanigans (latest with Paypal).

tarashill · 03/02/2015 16:43

I'll tell you what my daughter's called and she loves her name. Katherine. Quite unusual for someone to love their name but she's always loved it, either in its full form or shortened as in Kate, Katie, Kathy. I always think it looks nice written down in full.

tarashill · 03/02/2015 16:53

Dawn..... Joanna is a lovely name, always been a favourite of mine.Smile

lecherslady · 03/02/2015 16:58

I hate my name and so refuse to use it. I use a derivative instead. My name is a naff 70s name.

When I named my two DDs I gave them names with lots of options so they could play around with their names and find something they like. The names are like Elizabeth where you can get different nicknames that have a very different feel to them. Both DDs have found nicknames that they use and suit them, But DD2 says she thinks her nickname is a bit babyish and wants to go back to using her full name.

Bean89 · 03/02/2015 17:02

I have a name that can have a few variations, which I've used over different stages of my life. I've now settled with Rose which I really love.

Charlotte3333 · 03/02/2015 17:03

My name is Charlotte (which shows an incredible lack of imagination when it comes to picking usernames). I hated it as a child, was always Charlie but as a grown up I love it. It's not overly popular any more and it's quite old-fashioned which I like. Both boys have old-fashioned names and can't be shortened. I love when I'm out with them and have to middle-name them for misbehaving, old people always smile and nod approvingly at the names!

leedy · 03/02/2015 17:06

"When I named my two DDs I gave them names with lots of options so they could play around with their names and find something they like. "

Heh, I did the exact opposite with my two DSs - after my "I JUST WANT ONE NAME ON EVERYTHING" experience I deliberately gave them names with no possible shortened versions/variations.

googoodolly · 03/02/2015 17:07

I'm Nicola, which I've never liked and I always go by a nickname (Nina), which I love. Most people don't know my full name.

CloudDriver · 03/02/2015 17:08

I had one of those awful 70's/80's popular name that I guess was in the top ten at the time. Always hated it and changed it by deed poll as soon as I could.

scattyspice · 03/02/2015 17:10

What's wrong with Jackie?

ampersandand · 03/02/2015 17:11

My name is Tabatha, never really liked it, and dislike it when people pronounce it as 'Tabuhfur'.
Also when people spell it Tabitha Angry
I'm mainly known as Tabby, or Tabs to close friends.

Thisvehicleisreversing · 03/02/2015 17:14

I'm named the same as DealForTheKids

Hated it for being dull and boring at primary school (wanted to be called Tori)
There were 6 of us in the same year at seniors (3 of us even had the same middle name combo!) so wished there was a decent nickname for it.
Now as an adult I like it. It could belong to any age of any class.

EmmaJacksonHarley · 03/02/2015 17:15

No people are always misspelling it or calling me by a different name like Laura or Lauren.

My name is Lorna.

RabidFairy · 03/02/2015 17:16

High five Aberchips we have an awesome name.

To be truthful, I hated it growing up as there were so many around. I was one of 7 in my year, one of 2 in my form. It lead to me getting all manor of nicknames whether I liked them or not. So I've gone for names that rank low down in the naming census for my kids. Both of them have names that over the past 6 years have been in the 40-60 births per year region.

Withershins · 03/02/2015 17:16

I tried to name my daughter something unusual but not wacky, she is called Kizzie, and I still love it. She likes it to, but it does get spelt in various ways, and misheard on a telephone often becomes chrissy, kissy or lizzy.

HesterBlue · 03/02/2015 17:17

I hate my name. Very 1950's. Only trouble is I was born in the 70's! My top tip is: don't name your child after your best friend, they'll always sound a generation out of date...

Earsareconstantlyringing · 03/02/2015 17:22

I really like my name, especially now as my husband's surname begins with the first letter and I really like alliteration with first and surnames.

As I was growing up, I was always the only one in the class, and although I've met a fair few since (it's not unusual, just not overly popular), I don't have any in my close circle.

Just to be contrary, my name is spelt differently to the usual version as my dad named me after him and so a vowel is different. The name was meant to be pronounced differently, turning it into a man's name with an 'ie' on the end, but that must have sounded ridiculous so it just slowly morphed into the name I use now. I have never met anyone with the same spelling as mine until a very, very famous line of books came out and seeing that in print felt incredibly weird.

jeanmiguelfangio · 03/02/2015 17:25

I have the same name as weekend. It's ok, there were a lot of us at school, but I don't mind it now. It's pretty classic and works well. Although thinking about it no one actually calls me by my name in my family! I am normally known as Bess.
My daughter has a classic but unusual name. Think old French, I love it and she can shorten it to many variables if she wants.

MelonOfTroy · 03/02/2015 17:25

ConfusedandEmployed I always see Helen as a strong name, sort of cool and collected and in control. It's my daughter's middle name and her first name is the same as FelixFelix's. I didn't realise it was as unusual as it is, people do always say it's a very striking name though.

My name is Carol yn and although I like it I often ?ish my parents had just gone with Caroline as I'm constantly correcting people, people call me Caroline or Karen anyway even if I do correct them.

Platinumpennies · 03/02/2015 17:26

My name is Katherine. It was not massively common when I was born in the sixties but always a few around, often starting with a 'C'. I wasn't keen on it growing up and toyed briefly with 'Kathy'. Settled on 'Kate' with the odd 'Katherine' thrown in by my parents!

Really like it now.

FelixFelix · 03/02/2015 17:27

Melon I've never met another one Grin
