I'd only consider it vulgar if someone was constantly bragging about it. I think that's separate to the point about it being wasteful but only really your business if you have joint finances or if it will mean that you will miss out on something.

It's also vulgar to show the phone to anyone you come across saying "it's the latest one, you know, look at me, look at how much money I have!"

I personally think it's wasteful if you then just stick the perfectly working one in a drawer with a pile of others. Keep the last one as a back up. All others - sell if you like, donate to charity if you can afford to.

DH spent about that on his new phone. At first I resented it somewhat but I got over it.

He's on it about 7 hours a day for work. It has a really long battery life. He loves the camera. He finds the bigger screen easier to read.

I wouldn't do it. But I suppose others would. I guess it all comes down to how much money you have and whether or not you might need that money for something else.

But to answer your OP, it isn't "vulgar", as such. Unless you behave in a fearfully vulgar manner and remind everyone else that you have this phone because you are Considerably Richer than Yow.

It might be materialistic to spend £600 on something you don't need. It might also be unsustainable from an environmental perspective. It would be reckless if buying this phone left your little children short of food and needing to be sent out to beg. But ultimately, it is up to you. We cannot easily salve your conscience.

I just did this very thing. I had a perfectly good Moto G that I loved, but the battery was wearing down and can't be replaced (soldered in.) I had the idea that I would replace "sometime this summer." I then began to research phones. And then I went and looked at some. "Just for research. So I'll be ready in a few months and will know what I want."

I saw this phone (Samsung Galaxy Note 4) and fell in love. I lusted after it. I started saving for it. And then I had a bit of a windfall/a very good month at work for which I worked bloody hard. I decided that I deserved this treat and I bought it.

It is my precioussssss. I adore it. I am learning how to use all the bells and whistles and I am going to buy a lovely case for it and I will hug it and pet it and squeeze it and name it George.

My Moto G, which used to be my personal phone will now replace my work phone until that battery finally wears down too far to be of any use (at which point I will replace it with something nice but not glorious). My current work phone, which cost less than £100 will be downgraded to my secondary work phone (with which I test different advertising methods and venues). The secondary phone, which cost less than £50 will go into a drawer to be used for "spare".

In light of the other thread, the only thing I have to say is: breaks.

It's not something I'd do but I think spending £900 on a designer bag is worse. So it's all really a matter of opinion and what's important to you. But on the question of vulgarity. It's probably not so much vulgar as to own a phone that cost £600 but to go on about how much it cost.

If it's an iPhone 6 yabu, it's a bloody lovely phone.
