to think dog/cat owning smokers are delusional?

"My house doesn't smell of dog and I only smoke at the window/door/up the chimney so it doesn't smell"

YES IT DOES!

Same with some cats - especially litter trays.

Just because you are used to the smell, doesn't mean it doesn't smell. Even if you spray everything in fabreeze it just smells like fabreeze with a hint of dog.

What a spunktrumpet!

sebsmummy1 · 31/01/2015 08:42

You can get an idea of how your house smells by going out for a morning and then coming back in with the smell of outdoors still in your nostrils. My house smells of cooking smells sometimes and it's horrible.

Pipbin I don't consume milk therefore I smell of roses Grin

GelfBride · 31/01/2015 08:46

I think it depends on the dog. Some dogs that don't shed, don't seem to smell of dog. A house with a Shih Tzu probably won't smell like a house with a Basset Hound. Hounds stink. Love 'em but the slobber and the BO of hounds makes me want to start smoking! Grin

curiousgeorgie · 31/01/2015 08:49

Dropyoursword - we order it from Amazon and spray him occasionally or when he comes in wet... He smells gorgeous! My DD buries her face in his fur Grin

Micah · 31/01/2015 08:51

I have a cat and love the smell of cat :). Not that he smells a lot, but when you get close. All warm and catty. My house doesn't smell of cat. A clean litter tray doesn't smell any worse than a toilet. Dh's poo smells far worse than the cats :)

Much, much prefer it to mil's, which has those plug ins in every corner. You'll be sat on the sofa when suddenly a load of horrible chemical scent sprays itself up your nose.

Or an elderly relative that cooks with lard/animal fat. Her house smells, and her clothes smell when she comes to visit.

gamerchick · 31/01/2015 08:55

It's like a smoking bashing thread with a twist Grin

DurhamDurham · 31/01/2015 08:58

The thing is no one thinks that their house smells, we get used to the smell of the home we live in.
I visit people at home as part I of my job and every single house has it's own unique smell, some a lot nicer than others. Because of this I make sure to open the windows in our house on a daily basis, even if it's just for ten minutes. I don't use air fresheners but I do use scented candles occasionally if I'm cooking 'smelly' food.
The worst smells I encounter in homes are stale smells, a mixture of unwashed bodies and cooking smells and those who have cats and don't keep the littler tray clean.

londonrach · 31/01/2015 08:58

I dont drink milk either unless i have a hot chocolate once every year..Grin

Holdthepage · 31/01/2015 08:58

Sometimes stale cooking smells here too, no pets though. Agree with the plugs in, they are truly yuk.

We have cats, and we smoke..we cook too, so yes, our house smells, I dare say I do too, although I do my best to be clean when I actually go out. I have a friend who uses air fresheners everywhere though, and I think her's smells worse to be honest, chemical scent all over the house, often clashing, yuck

Charlotte3333 · 31/01/2015 09:06

We have a spaniel, four cats and two feral boys. I have no doubt our house smells a bit more than one with none of the above. I clean and hoover often, the dog goes to the groomer once a month (she's got those squiggly-fur ears that pick up fox shite every time she rolls in it, vile girl) and, ultimately, if the worst anyone can say for us is our house smells a bit doggy I can handle that.

I agree about smokers; I work in a school and can smell the children whose parents smoke. But it's not my business to judge them or their parents. The only thing I don't like is people smoking near my home; when guests visit who smoke they do so outside where the feral children can't see them. It's ridiculous, I know, because they'll see smokers out and about everywhere. I just don't want them thinking it's a normal thing to do.

Sallystyle · 31/01/2015 09:13

I am sure my house smells of dog and cat at times.

Am I meant to care?

I have a reasonably tidy and clean home. People being able to smell that I have pets does not bother me. I open windows a lot and clean to keep on top of it but I never expect my home to smell of roses. It's a home; we live here.

Sallystyle · 31/01/2015 09:20

And I have no doubt my rats smell as well.

It's a very musky smell.

Cheby · 31/01/2015 09:27

I've never really found cats to smell, unless there's a litter tray. Certainly not like dogs do. Is that because I'm used to cats? Can non cat owners tell straight away if there's a cat in the house from the smell? Ours have never had a litter tray beyond kittenhood, they go outside.

UncleT · 31/01/2015 09:28

Cat litter trays don't smell if you change them frequently and always scoop the poo straight out.

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 31/01/2015 09:29

My son's old tutor had a cat, and her house smelled absolutely terrible - cat pee/poo smell. She was the neighbor of a good friend of ours - he told us that she had absolutely no idea that her house smelled.

SuburbanRhonda · 31/01/2015 09:36

But smokers seem to always go on about how their houses smell fresh because they blow the smoke out a vent or something.

Come on, OP - how many smokers do you know who have actually said this?

Hmm

I've never noticed a cat smell...only cat food or dirty litter. If I walked into a cat owners house I would be able to smell if any cat food had been left out/open/just been served but I wouldn't smell the actual cat iyswim.

Do cats smell? I've got four and If I bury my face in the long-haired one he often smells like grass and mud with a meaty undertone but only if my nose is right in his fur. The others don't smell at all. Well..I hope they don't Blush

Dogs are a different matter though, as are smokers. DM 'only smokes outside' but her entrance hall and her clothes smell so strongly of stale smoke Sad

bwow · 31/01/2015 10:09

My dog is always smoking in the house, no amount of yankee candle burning can get rid of the smell.
