To hate this trend for hanging televisions on the wall.

Especially when it is on the party wall in the fucking bedroom and we have to listen to the NND watching crap at night.

It is the worst idea ever IMO. Looks terrible and is highly anti -social.

End of rant.

'Hiding' your tv behind an oil painting because it's your secret shame is just bizarre behaviour

I wouldnt hide my tv behind painting out of shame, I like tv, as I have said repeatedly.

There are two themes here, one is posters implying tvs on walls are not neccasery because tv itself is not necessary and those that like tv but feel sometimes hanging them on wall is not atheistically pleasing.

As I said before many people cannot hang normal pictures properly on walls, usually far too high so they are probably simply making same tv mistake.

OddBoots · 31/01/2015 20:58

Isn't it very hard to watch a TV when it's hidden behind an oil painting? Wink

KnittedJimmyChoos · 31/01/2015 20:58

Special glasses Odd. Grin

QueenInTheNorth · 31/01/2015 21:01

Ours is on the wall, because otherwise I would have no place to keep it!

IPityThePontipines · 31/01/2015 23:14

Limited - "I still haven't got around to watching Gomorrah" What?! Stop wasting time on this thread and get to it! Wink

I don't understand tv snobbery. There is some brilliant stuff out there. Not just dramas, but documentaries too and all so easily accessible. I think that's what perturbs the anti-tv folk, that tv is so easily available to everyone, I suppose to them worthwhile culture should be as inaccessible as possible.

Shakey - Vintage is great. I love the videos they make from old footage. The one they made for "Not Fade Away" is brilliant.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 31/01/2015 23:21

A mounted TV would look shit my living room, its quite small (the room). Depending on the room, they can look really good.

What I dont get, is people that buy TVs that completely overtake the lounge space by being to big for the space.

Apatite1 · 31/01/2015 23:36

I wonder what size tv I should get if the viewing distance is 6 metres?

bigbluestars · 01/02/2015 07:52

"I am an upstairs mounter, not a downstairs mounter." Wink

Cliffdiver · 01/02/2015 07:59

YANBU.

And I say this as someone who has a TV on the wall... And above my fireplace Hmm.

Was the only place in our lounge we could have put it to keep away from DD2s grasp.

I hate it up there, I think it looks vile and tacky.

bloodygorgeous · 01/02/2015 08:07

I think it's tacky too. I guess because it's a statement that telly is king and also because it's the focal point of the room.

UngratefulMoo · 01/02/2015 08:11

Oh dear. We have a big tv, wall mounted above the fireplace in our Victorian period home. Mainly because there's nowhere else to put it. I'd love to have a big elegant mirror there and a special 'tv viewing corner', but my flat isn't big enough. Does this mean I should modestly only have a 24inch TV to avoid the dreaded wall mounting?

TheFallenMadonna · 01/02/2015 08:17

I have a CRT television, so mounting is not possible.

Tinkerball · 01/02/2015 09:20

It never ceases to amaze me what done people can judge others about, would never have thought the position if your TV would ever be one of these! It's a TV - on a wall, fail to see what is tacky about that.

Sparklingbrook · 01/02/2015 09:25

TVs do seem to cause much distress on MN. TVs in bedrooms are tutted at, in fact watching TV at all is sometimes deemed a crime.

MN is judgey because everyone has an opinion. It doesn't matter though, because everyone can do as they like and not get all defensive about it. Grin

All these people saying 'but there's nowhere else to put it' -TVs are slimmer now than ever, what on earth do you think people with average sized sitting rooms did with theirs, between the 1950's and 2005 approximately? Confused If you can't fit your TV nicely into a corner or an alcove it's because it's too bloody big. Grin

Besides which, unless you have a very large sitting room, doesn't a humongous TV make you feel like you are pinned against the wall?

OttiliaVonBCup · 01/02/2015 15:55

I don't understand how it works.

I have all paintings on the wall, eye level.
For the TV to work best it has to be eye level too, except I do like to watch TV sitting down, so that would be TV on a stand or a low cabinet.

Having said that I did see the most hideous TV - mounted on a wall in a baroque gold frame. Oh dear.

HelloItsStillMeFell · 01/02/2015 17:22

TVs floating up high on the wall with nothing underneath them look very silly. They really need something to sort of anchor them, so you need some kind of console/cabinet thing underneath to stop it looking ridiculous. And if you are going to put a console/cabinet thing underneath then why not just stand the TV on that in the first place? At least it can be at a sensible height and you can tilt it from side to side if you need to.

WeAllHaveWings · 01/02/2015 17:46

ds(11) got a TV for his bedroom for Xmas, we initially had it on top of his 3 high drawers unit, but it meant he had no space for his clock, ipod dock, books etc.

Hung it on the wall behind his drawers and its freed up all the space and looks much neater and tidy.

Our living room TV is on a unit as it sits in a corner which suits our room and we don't have a flat wall to put it on (I wouldn't like the TV over the fireplace as it would be too high and I want to keep my fireplace), but wouldn't hesitate to hang on the wall if it suited the shape of my room.

krystellie · 01/02/2015 18:08

Having a TV on a party wall is extremely selfish. Our neighbours have theirs on the party wall next to our lounge and it got so bad that we had to pay for soundproofing to block the noise out.

KnittedJimmyChoos · 01/02/2015 18:13

Grin. I did give ours the eye yesterday wondering if it would go in one Grin

KnittedJimmyChoos · 01/02/2015 18:14

did you mention it to them I doubt they relaised but to be honest having sound proofing is no bad thing

krystellie · 01/02/2015 18:16

We mentioned it to them a few times, in a friendly way, but it didn't make much difference. It would quieten down for an evening and then go back to how it was the next day.

As you say, the soundproofing is probably no bad thing although there's other things I would rather have spent my money on!

ObsessInPhases · 01/02/2015 18:20

YANBU, tv on the wall looks UGLY. The huge tvs are unsightly enough, without having it on the wall, hung as though its some sort of art. UGLY lol

pandarific · 01/02/2015 18:27

We're planning to, because we're young, can't afford a massive place, and space is at a premium. Stick the flatscreen on the wall, and you have a whole corner freed up for whatever else.

Yes, we also have 'art and mirrors'. No, that wall will not make some poor neighbour's head rattle.

KnittedJimmyChoos · 01/02/2015 18:30

I know Kry but its done now and thats what people do...turn it down then start up, hopefully your ok now!
