Especially when it is on the party wall in the fucking bedroom and we have to listen to the NND watching crap at night.

It is the worst idea ever IMO. Looks terrible and is highly anti -social.

End of rant.

if you cant beat them join them lol put your tv up against the wall or some big arse speakers and give them some of their own medicine (mwah haha!) Grin

notnaice · 31/01/2015 10:54

Not good on a party wall but can be practical. Don't like them over fireplaces.

We have one normal one and one wall mounted one not in the same room though .

Dunkling · 31/01/2015 11:28

I hate huge tvs and can't stand them on the wall. Over the fireplace and it's just become a homage to naffness. I agree with the poster who said all tvs are just ugly though. Ours is hidden in a huge armoire so at least when it isn't being watched it becomes invisible.

silveroldie2 · 31/01/2015 14:46

I'm not keen having them on the wall. But what I don't really get is why if you live anywhere other than Buckingham Palace, you would need a 50 inch tv which is huge? Useful I guess if you want to watch it whilst sitting at the bottom of your garden.

SoleSource · 31/01/2015 14:51

A shower rod hides cables. My TV has a huge box at the back but looks like a flats screen. I prefer TV unit.

dazzlingdeborahrose · 31/01/2015 15:15

Mine is hung above the fireplace Sad. I will go now and beat myself with a wet kipper to atone for my sins.

To be honest, I always thought I'd hate it but when we moved hubby had the whole house wired through the walls so the tv had to go on the wall. But, it makes it less intrusive. You see the whole room before you notice the tv. Sky boxes, DVD player and router are all under the stairs so no wires or stands. I don't have to plan the room around the tv stand. No party walls though. Don't think people realise how easily sound travels through the walls. There's soundproofing materials available and people should really look into some soundproofing of the wall before popping a tv on it. Maybe that's an option for the OP?

Now, where did I leave that kipper.......

Sark · 31/01/2015 15:26

So how does it work if your mpneighbour hangs their tv on the same wall? I think they shouldn't be allowe on walls unless you can officially prove they will not affect your neighbour.

AryaUnderfoot · 31/01/2015 15:39

I have a 55" inch TV mounted on the wall of our family room.

I don't give a shiny shite what anyone thinks about what it looks like. My house, my TV.

It is a detached house, so it's not hurting anyone.

BumpAndGrind · 31/01/2015 16:04

I think having them wall mounted looks a bit 'hospital waiting room'.

DoJo · 31/01/2015 16:25

I have a tiny tv (so much so that I can barely read the on-screen guide these days) but it is mounted on the wall to allow us to fold it away when nobody is watching it.

IMO, anyone who feels that their television is 'like an altar to media, it dominates and dictates' probably has bigger tv problems than what size it is and whether it's wall-mounted or not. It's supposed to be for entertainment - if you feel that it dominates you and dictates to you then maybe not having one at all would be healthier.

SoupDragon · 31/01/2015 16:29

Each to their own. Personally, I agree with the OP and hate them, especially mounted above a fireplace. I have a huge mirror above my fireplace and the TV sits in one of the alcoves on a beautiful golden oak dressing table with the mirror removed. I'm sure some people would hate it but it's not their living room :)

bigbluestars · 31/01/2015 16:32

bumpandgrind- Insightful!! I wondered why I disliked it so much and you have clarified my views. Yes - like a hospital waiting room, or a departure loung in an airport, giving the TV so much prominence undermines the whole reason to relax in a sitting room.
Like some families who have the TV on constantly for "backgroud noise" I find the the visual intrusion on a massive prominent screen too dominating for a room which has many purposes, for the family to relax, talk, play games and enjoy being together.

noddyholder · 31/01/2015 16:33

I think it looks dreadful too.

bigbluestars · 31/01/2015 16:37

Perhaps it has to do with how much you watch TV? Our TV is on for 1-2 hours a day maximum. Maybe we watch a movie or two or a documentary at weekends, but we are too busy and choose not to sit and watch the mindless crap otherwise. Perhaps that's why it doesn't deserve a prominent place.

For those wall mounters- how much TV do you watch?

DoJo · 31/01/2015 16:38

I still don't see why a tv on a wall gives it more prominence than a tv on a piece of furniture, but nobody seems able to explain it, or at least not on this thread. I will just have to ensure that I never host an MN meet-up for fear of it being defaced with rude Latin phrases and obscene quotes from Voltaire...Grin

Nomama · 31/01/2015 16:43

Well ours is on a movable wall bracket. Pulled out of an evening when we watch it. Flat back against the wall when not in use - or I am ironing.

It is nice and low, no craning of necks and it allows us to have a lot more room than a horrible TV stand would take up.

DH did no damage fitting it either.

CalamitouslyWrong · 31/01/2015 16:44

When we looked at houses, I was really put off by tvs mounted on walls. It was just another thing that would cost money (and be a pain in the arse) to remove the unsightly mess used to put the bloody thing up there and make it look like a wall again. There is no way I'm mounting my tv on the wall (especially not if I have to stare up at it like watching those crap tvs in the aisles of planes back in the day).

bigbluestars · 31/01/2015 16:46

Nomama I am glad to hear your husband was unhurt.

Nomama · 31/01/2015 16:48

Smile That too, bigbluestars.

Shakey1500 · 31/01/2015 16:49

The amount of snobbery on here is priceless Grin

"Oh we are far too intelligent to have anything bigger than a 12" inch screen, which really only gathers dust save for an hour a month to watch a programme on Dostoyevsky or a chap of his ilk"

Fair do's Smile

Mintyyssockie · 31/01/2015 16:51

Yanbu. I really dislike them too. Televisions should be in a corner. Ideally in another room.

Mintyyssockie · 31/01/2015 16:51

Yes, it's something I am quite snobby about.

bigbluestars · 31/01/2015 16:55

Again I ask- especially to the "mounters" - how much TV do you actually watch? Giving a device such prominence in a room- why?
As much as I love a relative or my OH I wouldn't give him so much prominent wall space.

limitedperiodonly · 31/01/2015 16:57

I guess you're not meant to show off your tv too much, because it's it's still a bit déclassé to really like telly. You're meant to have a tiny little tv, hidden in a corner, which you only watch from time to time in between reading improving books.

IPityThePontipines I haven't got time for improving books. I still haven't got around to watching Gomorrah, The Knick, Braquo, The Legacy, re-runs of The Wire and various other much dirtier things like Legends. And Fortitude started the other day.

I deleted Olive Kitteridge because though improving, it was really dull.

Nomama · 31/01/2015 16:57

And again I won't answer Smile

Ours is far less prominent on the wall than it would be on a piece of furniture. It takes up far less room and can be moved out of the way. That's why we stuck it on the wall in the first place.

You've made an assumption about all wall mounted tvs which may not be the case for all of them!
