To hate this trend for hanging televisions on the wall.

Especially when it is on the party wall in the fucking bedroom and we have to listen to the NND watching crap at night.

It is the worst idea ever IMO. Looks terrible and is highly anti -social.

End of rant.

OP posts:
WilburIsSomePig · 31/01/2015 18:26

Are you saying that there are no fashions, trends or styles that you dislike?

Not at all Minty, as I said in my post, there are things I see in others homes that I don't particularly like or are not to my taste, but I don't see a difference of opinion as something to be judgey about, as it really doesn't matter.

Mintyyssockie · 31/01/2015 18:28

But op does. She feels like posting a thread about it. She could have said (like I have done recently) "I really dislike these huge high definition eyebrows the young girls wear now" and lots of people posted to agree, and plenty didn't.

But there is no need to take anything personally or get defensive about it. People are just shooting the breeze, really.

HelloItsStillMeFell · 31/01/2015 18:29

But why judge someone over something so inane Hello?

Because I assume that (like me) most people want their homes to look nice and when they do something that makes a room look clumsy and ugly and proportionally all wrong, I just don't understand why that would do that and I want to shake them and say 'can't you see how wrong that looks?' Why would you do that? Shock

I've seen some horrendous abominations on rightmove recently, in the TV wall mounting department. Truly horrendous. Grin I wish I could find them again and I'd show you.

KnittedJimmyChoos · 31/01/2015 18:31

People are just shooting the breeze, really indeed Grin

best hidden mounted tv I saw was in lovely hotel in tuscany over a fire place Shock, but hidden under an oil painting ....gorgeous and perfect solution..

limitedperiodonly · 31/01/2015 18:32

I don't understand.

As it happens, my TV isn't above my fireplace and without getting out the tape measure, I think it's about 26 inches.

But unless you're bothering the neighbours; who cares?

I expect to leave this house in a box. If the next occupants have to tidy other boxes up a little, that's their look out.

wfrances · 31/01/2015 18:33

no tvs on walls here either

KnittedJimmyChoos · 31/01/2015 18:33
  • I just don't understand why that would do that and I want to shake them and say 'can't you see how wrong that looks?' Why would you do that?

But there are so many things in others homes that one could say that about, the usual laminated wood floors you cant walk on, the twigs in vases, brown leather sofas, ventura family pics on walls....repleat with barefoot smiling couples ...

tvs are so much better now...sleeker thinner..

HelloItsStillMeFell · 31/01/2015 18:37

I don't object to the mounting per se, it's more the way some people mount them that bewilders me.

SoupDragon · 31/01/2015 18:41

Why is a tv on a wall more prominent than one on a piece of furniture?

I think it's because it's a huge blank dark rectangle on the wall where you would normally see a picture, a mirror or blank expanse of wall. You are used to seeing furniture at a lower level so it is less noticeable.

shinysparklythings · 31/01/2015 18:42

This thread has made me chuckle! GrinGrinGrin

I have literally just finished wall mounting my brand new 50" TV above the fireplace and I love it!

Agree not for everyone but it's great for us. No trailing wires as the aerial and power socket are behind the TV, and because it's on a tillable mount it is tilted slightly down to avoid strange glare! GrinGrinGrin

KnittedJimmyChoos · 31/01/2015 18:43

Only know Lee from the omen.
dont remember george in look whose talking.

KnittedJimmyChoos · 31/01/2015 18:45

agree soup and people tend not to have many pics on walls and ones they do are usually too high and too few, if it were in amongst other hangings, it wouldnt stand out so much but it has become a feature...

limitedperiodonly · 31/01/2015 18:56

but hidden under an oil painting ....gorgeous and perfect solution

But is it? It's just a posher version of hiding the telly in a laminated cabinet.

Most of us watch TV. Some of us gaze at paintings. Some of us even read books. Sometimes they're improving ones. We sometimes stumble into museums at the end of bracing walks or go to the cinema, theatre or opera.

The people here who insist they just watch an hour or two of wildlife documentaries every now and then on tiny TVs in a back room make me scoff at their ignorance of the wealth of quality TV out there and pity them for the paucity of their idea of culture.

So, basically you are just as snobby and judgemental as they are...? :o

WilburIsSomePig · 31/01/2015 19:03

Minty I was kind of responding to Hello's post when she said that she judges people for it, I don't really get that.(but I'm not offended by it though I must have come across as if I am). Nothing wrong with the thread at all.

Hello (hello! Grin) I think loads of things look wrong but I kind of feel a bit meh about it rather than judgey. Anyway my house is super and I don't even have twigs and shit in it, come round and watch my telly on the wall, I'll even give you some of my homemade wine!

KnittedJimmyChoos · 31/01/2015 19:12

But is it?

YES I think so, I have no objection to them being mounted, I am an upstairs mounter, not a downstairs mounter...however...I don't think they look right - above a fire place.

However if you hid behind a painting that is the perfect solution. For tv mounting....above a fireplace cultural issues are a different ball game.

A thread a while ago revealed an astonishing no of mn who do not have tv Shock. I think its brilliant.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 31/01/2015 19:17

Exactly Limited. There is almost too much good TV now; I have never seen Breaking Bad, Orange is the New Black, Broadchurch or loads of other critically acclaimed shows.

We have recently finished watching The Wire, an absolutely fantastic piece of work by any standards. I am puzzled why anyone would be disparaging about TV these days.

KnittedJimmyChoos · 31/01/2015 19:17

But of course it depends on room context a massive oil painting would look out of place in many homes Grin the room I am thinking of was like this

www.borgosantopietro.com/en/5-star-style-and-luxury/suites/valle-serena/

so better no large tv

limitedperiodonly · 31/01/2015 19:23

So, basically you are just as snobby and judgemental as they are...?

Not at all SoupDragon. I watch telly in a professional and personal capacity.

It's my job, but if it wasn't, I'd still watch it and enthusiastically look forward to programmes and discuss them - not least on the MN Telly Addicts forum.

That forum is a great deal of fun and very informed.

I think you contribute there too btw, so maybe I've got the wrong end of the stick.

There is an enormous amount of stuff out there. I prefer not to watch most of it. That doesn't make me a snob. I just exercise personal taste and time management issues.

Where did you get your username from btw Grin

Kaekae · 31/01/2015 19:27

Never liked the idea of it on the wall, purely because I think it would hurt my neck.

HelloItsStillMeFell · 31/01/2015 19:33

I've just spend a very happy half hour looking for examples of awful telly mountings. I could post links all day but I'll just offer up this one for now.

hmmmm relaxed and comfy ambience Confused The phrase 'pea on a drum' springs to mind. I imagine people lined up in rows on that sofa waiting for

'Bing Bong!!! Ticket number 27please proceed to counter B'

Do we think it's okay to have a whole thread of alarming/bewildering things you see in estate agents' photos, or not? Because I am finding some crackers, let me tell you. One person seems to be running some sort of snack bar from their garage. Confused

DoJo · 31/01/2015 19:34

I think it's because it's a huge blank dark rectangle on the wall where you would normally see a picture, a mirror or blank expanse of wall.

Finally - someone has answered me! Thanks Soup! Grin

It sounds to me as though the problem isn't actually the wall-mounting per se, but the assumption that if your television is wall-mounted it will be a) huge and b) in a prominent place. I think everyone is imagining a completely different wall-mounted television to me, which explains my confusion at least.

Personally, I think size and placement have much more impact on a room than how a tv is actually supported. But I also think hating tv in general is a bit weird, especially when there is SO much variety available that you would have to have the personality of a turnip if you couldn't find a single programme designed to appeal to you.

LadyFlumpalot · 31/01/2015 19:46

Doesn't the heat from the fireplace damage the TVs though? We have an open fire and tonight it is chucking out so much heat that I've had to retreat to the other side of the room! I can't see any TV above it surviving.

roundtable · 31/01/2015 20:03

I'm reading this thread whilst watching tv mounted on the wall in a bedroom.

Later I might read my Kindle with the tv on in the background. I must be a very classless person. BlushGrin

The tv isn't on a party wall and I think that's the real issue. That is very rude op. Not sure what can be done though. After living next to loud and rude neighbours for a while I've got used to sleeping with a fan on which blocks out noise of others.

CalamitouslyWrong · 31/01/2015 20:21

Hello: I can't, for the life of me, work out why they've mounted the tv in that link so far up the wall. It's not like they couldn't have mounted it as comfortable eye level. There's a huge empty space where a tv should be underneath it.

I'm all for living rooms being optimised around tvs. I just think they should actually be optimised. Having to look up at the tv is not my idea of optimised. 'Hiding' your tv behind an oil painting because it's your secret shame is just bizarre behaviour.
