To hate this trend for hanging televisions on the wall.

Especially when it is on the party wall in the fucking bedroom and we have to listen to the NND watching crap at night.

It is the worst idea ever IMO. Looks terrible and is highly anti -social.

End of rant.

TVs in the bedroom. No- just wrong.
Bedrooms are for many things but not watching TV.

Lucyccfc · 30/01/2015 21:30

Mine 'floats' above the tv cabinet in the corner of our wall. Its not huge, but is a very thin Smart tv and I wouldn't have felt comfortable with it just being on top of the tv cabinet. It's much more secure on the wall, but not too high up.

For me, a TV, whether it's on a wall or not, should be the right size for your room or it can totally dominate a nice room. I'm not a fan of them being above a fire either. All that rising heat cannot be good for the TV.

We do get a funny look from visitors though, as my fire is very modern and looks a bit like a plasma tv on the wall. I regularly get asked why we have 2 tv's. It throws out that much heat that it would trash any tv that was above it.

Each to their own - sure there are lots of different reasons why people put tv's on their wall or not.

Mythical Being as all art is subjective, I consider my floating TV a veritable masterpiece

Tinkerball · 30/01/2015 21:34

Never had a stiff beck! And the wires are all covered up with something designed for this DH bought. Never had to get a plasterer either, DHs friend helped him out the bracket up.

Sceptimum · 30/01/2015 21:35

This is what I love about MN; finding out all the faux pas's I'm making!

Love our wall mount - keeps the TV well away from our toddler and elevates it to perfect viewing height from our sofa. The mount can be angled too, so you can adjust the TV to face any area of the room if needed, or just fiddle with the wires if the TV goes bust.

We mounted ours and made a recess of it by surrounding with bookshelves, cupboards and the old TV cabinet. It's fab. Some day all those thinga will be full of books and DVDs again but right now, as everything below waist height is, is a play ground for the toddler.

Love my wall mount. I may go and hug it.

Tinkerball · 30/01/2015 21:35

Neck even haha!!

Sparklingbrook · 30/01/2015 21:38

I think I will keep mine on my wooden unit bought especially as it houses the DVD/ Sky box etc and looks all very neat. Plus my walls get to stay in one piece.

TailorMouse · 30/01/2015 21:39

We've mounted our tv above the fireplace....but all other walls have pictures/mirrors/art so doesn't dominate, opens the room out and means we can sit properly to watch it rather than have to huddle in one place if it went back to looming in the corner.
Think it depends as well what you do with the rest of the room - for example, our fireplace has a beautiful georgian fireguard in front, and some amazing bronze statues from my grandparents - those get noticed far more than the tv!

bigbluestars · 30/01/2015 21:39

Doesn't having the TV on the wall make things a bit permanent? I like to move furniture around from time to time and that includes the TV.

Sparklingbrook · 30/01/2015 21:41

i hope these TVs aren't mounted on feature walls. Shock

Shakey1500 · 30/01/2015 21:50

But of COURSE NOT!! I mean, honestly, who in their right mind would put a wall mounted TV on a feature wall Shock Even one that is recently painted a marvellous teak colour?? Not I. No siiirreeeee.

Sparklingbrook · 30/01/2015 21:51
Grin
Shakey1500 · 30/01/2015 21:52

teal even!

Comito · 30/01/2015 21:58

I would never have ours on the wall, partly because that would make it fairly permanent, partly because there isn't anywhere it could easily go and also because I hate the TV being a focal point of the room. We have a decent-looking stand in the corner.

natureplantar101 · 30/01/2015 21:59

YABU we have a 50" on the wall above the fireplace it saves space and doesnt make any more noise for the neighbours than having it in the corner next to the fireplace on a standHmm Biscuit

AmantesSuntAmentes · 30/01/2015 22:08

I think it's especially weird when it's mounted above the fireplace.

Me too, pictish! Or enormous. My TV isn't the highlight of my home and I don't want it to be.

DoJo · 30/01/2015 22:09

I still don't understand how a tv against a wall with nothing underneath it is so much more unpalatable to those who care than a tv against a wall with a piece of furniture underneath it? What if you have a tv mounted on a wall that looks like it's balanced on a piece of furniture?

DoJo · 30/01/2015 22:11

....and how does a tv on a wall make it a focal point of a room in a way that a tv on a piece of furniture doesn't?

OddBoots · 30/01/2015 22:17

The look of it makes no odds to me, I'm not fussed by aesthetics, I value pragmatism and in their own home people can make it look however they like.

The sound thing is a genuine concern though, the noise to next-door is louder and more pervasive when their wall is being used as a very close up acoustic reflector. If the TV is on a moving bracket that you move away from the wall when you use it then it won't be too bad (although obviously it is still physically connected to the wall through the bracket) but leaving it close to the wall will transfer an annoying amount of sound.

A lot of home fashions don't seem to be neighbourly though, hard flooring and stairs for example.

Comito · 30/01/2015 22:21

dojo In our living room, if it was on the wall it would be the focal point because of the size and layout of the room. But even if it wasn't I would hate having a small room taken over by a huge TV. But maybe that's just me.

DarylDixonsDarlin · 30/01/2015 22:23

Surprised to hear about falling tvs killing children - are these new style ones? Ours now weighs 12kg and is 40 inch, on a wall shelf. It replaced our 60kg crt tv which was placed on a wooden floorstanding tv unit - I think my toddler is safer with our new option? And we have room under the shelf for 2 toyboxes now, where the tv unit was l, so much more suitable for us.

Cornettoninja · 30/01/2015 22:25

In an attempt to come across as...well I don't really know what to be honest I follow the joey from friends rule 'if you don't have a TV what does all your furniture point at?'. The point of the rule being to not do that Grin

We have a tiny house and a TV on a stand but it swivels so we basically pretend like we don't care about it but in reality it follows us.

I point blank refuse to mount it above the fireplace. It's too high and is just odd imho.

lollilou · 30/01/2015 22:28

Don't wall mount them above a woodburner or real fire it shortens the life of them.

DoJo · 30/01/2015 22:34

Fair enough, but many of the posts on here seem to suggest that a TV mounted on the wall looks universally bad, not just because of the layout of their rooms. And I don't see how a tv 'takes over a room' just because it's mounted on the wall rather than sitting on something else?

LST · 30/01/2015 22:39

Ours is 47" mounted above the fireplace... (which we never use)

I'd say it was the focal point. It's on for about 20 hours a day... though our largeish the fish tank is next to it so your gaze sometimes wanders to that.
