To be disapointed by the lack of support for Harvey?

I am no fan of Katie Price, but I am really disappointed that most of the feedback I have seen regarding the LEA support Harvey has for his disability has been all about the fact that his mother is a high earner? We have a welfare state in this country for a reason- to help those in society that need it most- eg disabled children!!!. Do we want a welfare state or not? I am fearful that this country is turning into a very selfish and judgemental society that the Government is turning to it's advantage, and the welfare state will slowly be eroded away. I am am not saying that KP has any right to claim benefits, but this is about her child's education.

Special schools are pretty thin on the ground Imperial

Given his complex needs it is likely that there is no suitable provision any closer. 1.5 hours travelling each way isn't unusual in my area due to a lack of specialist provision.

ILovePud · 29/01/2015 22:00

Apparently he was settled at a local school and then it was closed down. I think the ugly side of the inclusion agenda is the pressure on special needs schools, one size doesn't fit all and families should have choices.

AndreaZuckerman · 29/01/2015 22:00

Most of the stuff I've seen has been supportive, as it should be. Anyone who doesn't is a dick. Yes, I'm looking at you Katie Hopkins!

My dd goes to a special school and has state funded transport to get her there and back. The school (building) itself is falling apart and it's disgraceful that the LEA are letting children attend in the state it's in. A new one is supposedly being built but the date keeps getting putting back. Hmm

I don't earn millions (I wish) but if I did I'm sure what else could actually be done with money? There aren't any private special schools as far as I'm aware? So what is KP supposed to do? It's disgraceful that people like KH think Harvey doesn't deserve to be educated like any other child.

Regardless of whether KP is on Big Brother at the moment,I don't understand why all the vitriol is directed at her when Harvey has a multi millionaire father in Dwight Yorke.

mynameisbob · 29/01/2015 22:02

Not on FB, so didn't see many supportive messages. Maybe I'm reading the wrong forums, but when I saw so many negative responses even on the Guardian website, I found it quite depressing that people couldn't be supportive of a disabled child's right to a free education. BTW I think KP is a fantastic mum, just not a fan of her public image IYSWIM.

I was going to say what ShouldI said.

The cost of the transport is neither here or there. Why on earth are disabled children, who are probably the most vulnerable people in our society, having to be put in a taxi and travel 3 hours on top of a normal school day just to get an education? What the hell is wrong with this country? Why have we not got enough special schools, or schools with the provisions for these children?

That there is the scandal, not that the LEA pay for Harvey's transport.

AndreaZuckerman · 29/01/2015 22:02

I'm not sure

tarashill · 29/01/2015 22:02

It's about the cost of the transport, that's what she claims for. Harvey has every right to go to that school, but even if the government didn't pay I would imagine that Kate would pay it. He wouldn't miss out either way, nor would he be bothered who payed for it.

Ohmygrood · 29/01/2015 22:03

There were plenty of negative messages on the DM when this story broke.

TheFairyCaravan · 29/01/2015 22:03

Imperial he was at a nearer school, it was closed down. KP and the other parents tired to set up a Free School but it was turned down.

Seriouslyffs · 29/01/2015 22:04

I'm glad the consensus is supportive- I caught the thread the other day and was sad when it went as most posts supported Harvey's right to state education.

RJnomore · 29/01/2015 22:07

I too thought this was about Harvey the dog.

But now I realise it isn't, I don't give a shiney shite what her income is, her child is entitled to the appropriate education and that includes getting him to his place of education. As someone pointed out way up there, she's paid for it over and over in taxes.

I'll raise a point I have often mentioned on benefit bashing threads - Thr majority of people are net takers from the system. I'm pretty sure that kp is overall a net giver.

I may not want to be Bessie mates with her but in this, I support her and Harvey.

tarashill · 29/01/2015 22:07

Dwight York could if he wanted afford to build a school that caters for children like Harvey and fund it out of his own pocket nearer to where Harvey lives, saving him having to make such a long journey every day. Does he ever see his lovely child?

meglet · 29/01/2015 22:07

shouldi I didn't realise it was so far away.

minionmadness · 29/01/2015 22:10

But KP didn't chose to send Harvey to the new school, it is the only one able to meet his complex needs. He was at school nearby... it closed!

Why then should she fund transport costs... her income is irrelevant.

As others have said the real scandal here is that there is no suitable school closer to where they live and Harvey is now spending a large chunk of his day travelling to and from school just to get an education.

Starlightbright1 · 29/01/2015 22:10

Another supporter here...The day transporting a child to school comes down to the parent when there isn't a local school their child can attend is a very sad day for this country...

sebsmummy1 · 29/01/2015 22:12

I had no idea, until her Mother did an interview regarding her son's local school bring closed down, that that was why he had to travel so far. They campaigned to keep it open and also supported a local free school but both were rejected so now he has to travel to a school in London. I wish she has made that clear to Katie Hopkins in BB because under those corcumstabces the LEA paying for transportation becomes totally reasonable to even the most hard nosed.

Aeroflotgirl · 29/01/2015 22:13

No Tara I don't think so because he is a fucking disgrace!

ohnoalfie · 29/01/2015 22:14

Agree with the pp's, the shocking thing is that a child with such complex needs has to travel such a long way. It's disgusting. K Hopkins is, as usual, completely clueless. She has no idea of the struggles and difficulties parents face when dealing with Local authorities. Good on kp for securing what her son is entitled to. Not anything more.

beanlovesb · 29/01/2015 22:18

I heard a debate about this on three counties radio this morning and the majority of callers (and the presenter) thought it was a "disgrace" and saying that Katie price had no moral compass for taking the funding. They kept going on about how much she earns. it really annoyed me because it's not HER benefits, it's her son's, and of course he's entitled to it. so glad to see that MNers are more sensible than the people phoning into the radio!

JoanHickson · 29/01/2015 22:19

I too would have liked to have had the full story. I had no idea they closed his local school.

goldface · 29/01/2015 22:22

I wholeheartedly support Katie and Harvey. As others have quite rightly stated he is absolutely entitled to transport to school and to the medical support required to make at journey safe. The scandal is in the unacceptable distance that he has to travel to school in the first place. Predictably heartless of Katie Hopkins not to attempt to understand this.

Bettybodybooboo · 29/01/2015 22:23

I support her 100% on this.

And she was far too good for that wet fart Andre.

I think she works hard for her family and good on her.

Bettybodybooboo · 29/01/2015 22:25

Katie Hopkins will say anything if it gets her publicity.
