to not get what the big deal is with Ryan Gosling?

Watching Murder by Numbers looking like this --> Confused anytime Sandra Bullock says the main suspect is 'the cutest guy she's ever seen' then at the end I see it's Ryan Gosling.

I've seen loads of references to him in books and RL being 'hot' but to me he's really average looking and his eyes are far too close together

I know he's got a reputation for being a lovely guy but surely all the hype can't just be because he's famous and nice?

AIBU to not get what the big deal is?

The first film I saw him in was Drive and that was it. I thought I was too old for crushes but he bloody well stirred up something in me. I'd say pre-2011 he wasn't as hot (didn't fancy him in The Notebook, haven't seen Murder By Numbers)

I don't get it. He looks like a seagull to me. Sharp nose and cold dead eyes.

MrsGoslingWannabe · 28/01/2015 01:02

This was only a year ago so I was late discovering him. DP's workmates say he looks like him so it must be a certain look I like.

MrsGoslingWannabe · 28/01/2015 01:04

Yeah loved him in Crazy Stupid Love. Eva Mendes is so lucky.

gobbynorthernbird · 28/01/2015 01:05

Maybe it's because he looks like Rodney Trotter.

TendonQueen · 28/01/2015 01:05

I had seen still pictures of him and didn't get it. But I certainly did when I saw Crazy, Stupid Love ('it's like you've been Photoshopped' Grin) and Drive sealed it. He's very charismatic on screen IMO. But if he doesn't float your boat, why worry? I've never got Brad Pitt even though I like him in a lot of his films.

TendonQueen · 28/01/2015 01:06

Grin at 'seagull' and Rodney though

MrsGoslingWannabe · 28/01/2015 01:09

Yes his on-screen presence is what did it for me. I loved his character in Drive - understated fucking gorgeousness!

MrsGoslingWannabe · 28/01/2015 01:11

I will go now and hopefully have sweet RyGoz dreams.

I never saw what it was about him that made him 'hot' or whatever.

But then I watched Lars and the Real Girl.

At the risk of sounding like a 12 year old girl, he was very cute in that and a really good actor.

Misfitless · 28/01/2015 02:32

Doesn't do it for me, but then neither do Clooney or Pitt.

Gosling has got no real upper lip as far as I can see, so that rules him out. I come across quite a few men with no upper lip who other women think are gorgeous and I'm always a bit Confused.

Misfitless · 28/01/2015 02:33

Anyway, whoever said, Eva Mendes is very lucky, they've split up, I think. Very sad, given that they've got a young baby.

Theveryhungrycaterpillar123 · 28/01/2015 02:49

I don't get it either. Or the fuss over Channing Tatum, with his thick neck and two sticky out ears. he looks like a potato.

MokunMokun · 28/01/2015 02:56

I didn't see the attraction but I saw him in a couple of films and thought he was hot.

JustAnotherControlFreak · 28/01/2015 03:36

I'm so glad I'm not the only one that just doesn't see it! My friends (mid 20s) seem to be obsessed...Confused

gabsdot45 · 28/01/2015 08:38

I don't get it either. He's got a nice enough face, I guess but he's nothing that special. Also he mumbles and it's really hard to understand what he's saying half the time.

ThursdayLast · 28/01/2015 08:39

His eyes are so close together!

treaclesoda · 28/01/2015 08:40

I think I'm getting really old but I don't actually know what he looks like. I know he is an actor, I know the name, but if I saw him in the street I'd be oblivious.

This takes me back to teenage years and my mum not knowing who Take That were Grin

pinkdelight · 28/01/2015 09:02

I don't fancy him but he's a good actor and got that rare star quality thing of being able to be very still on camera and still hold your (or at least most people's) attention. He also takes risks with material which makes him even more interesting to watch. Check out Place Beyond the Pines.

pinkdelight · 28/01/2015 09:03

And Blue Valentine.

Nabootique · 28/01/2015 09:05

I don't understand the fuss about most heart throbs (George Clooney, Johnny Depp and Robert Pattison to name but three) but I wouldn't mind a bit of Ryan, especially when he's a bit beardy like in Half Nelson.

OnlyLovers · 28/01/2015 09:12

His eyes are too close together, but I'd still have a go with Ryan. [magnanimous] I'm sure he'd be delighted and relieved to hear that. He's quite hawt in Half Nelson.

Channing Tatum DOES look like a potato! I don't get that one at all. If he got in the lift at work or served your coffee in Starbucks you wouldn't look twice.

lovedoge · 28/01/2015 09:13

I HATED the film Drive with an epic passion. Literally HATED it. Wasn't a huge fan of Crazy Stupid Love either to be honest.

I wouldn't say I find Ryan Gosling to be the most attractive person ever, but I think - as you say - a lot of it has to do with how utterly charming he is (apparently) in interviews and things. Plus he is meant to be incredibly funny and generally lovely.

So basically it's his personality that makes him outrageously attractive to people - not that he is pig ugly or anything, but you know what I mean?

I think that's quite nice actually?
