Friends boiler broke down & was fixed for free within 4 days. When mine broke down, I had to apply for a loan to get it fixed & took 4 weeks.

All she's done is moan on Fb it's taken too long.

Felt like adding get a job & try paying for it yourself & then you'd have something to moan about!

Still paying off the sodding loan - how I wish I had a council house ??

Can I buy one please Grin

We dare not strip our hallway to redecorate as it will need re plastering, my husband knows plasterers but it's the cost to do it.

Nurse I'm beginning to think your friend is making it up or she has made things up to the council to get these things done as it's not easy, it's like getting blood out of a stone for most people, especially with the cuts etc.

BeCool · 27/01/2015 15:53

YANBU. I thought we were insured for every eventuality, but found I was not insured for the flu breaking, and being irreplaceable because of a change in the law.

I'm a home owner with a job, so we were entitled to no help what so ever. In the end we were without heating and hot water for nearly a year, until I managed to borrow enough to replace the boiler. We were then classed as "an emergency" because we have children in the house, and were seen within a week. We were not an "emergency" when we didn't have any money.

I wouldn't expect a new boiler as a gift, but why couldn't we have been lent the money? Even the gas board wouldn't let us have it and pay back by raising the gas bills, because my credit rating wasn't good enough. it all comes from owing thousands for childcare, so I can work, but I'd been a customer of British gas for 20 years and never been a day late paying the bills ever.

bettyboop1970 · 27/01/2015 15:58

Moved here in 1999, still waiting for a new loo and bathroom.

specialsubject · 27/01/2015 15:59

be aware that landlords do not have special hotlines to boiler technicians, although many (like me) will have 24 hour emergency cover for the rented property. Fixes take the same time as they do for all properties, although 'not being able to afford it' would be totally unacceptable for a landlord.

it takes as long as it takes to fix. That's real life.

We had a leak in our roof, was coming from the chimney, my husband is a roofer, it was a bloke he'd worked with years ago who came and fixed it, my husband has said plenty of times he'll fix anything if they'd send the parts, he's always ignored Grin

Also, Derek, do you get fobbed off by the male workers? They give me bullshit excuses as to why the problem we're complaining about is fine but not my dh.

betty boop, what is wrong with your current loo and bathroom?

Ludoole · 27/01/2015 16:07

My private LL disconnected the fire, didnt send anyone to fix his cooker during my last 4 months renting and i waited over 3 days after reporting a leak which made the ceiling bulge... Im currently in a council house and bloody grateful too!!!

confused79 · 27/01/2015 16:14

Partner and I are council tenants (we both work. Just putting that out there) and took us 3 years to get our hallway replastered. Not that long, but considering the tenant before us had been hassling them to do it for years before that, I would say it was a good 6 years. The hallway was literally just board as all the plaster had come down, and the only reason why we had it done when we did was because the ceiling came down at once and could've crushed one of my kids. I was more than happy to pay to have it done myself but wasn't allowed, so had to live in a grotty house for years. My living room was well decorated and hid a multitude of sins (loose plaster being one of them) but then they came round to do electrics and smashed the wall to bits, so now it's the same as what our hallway was. And have had no offer from them to have it fixed. I'll be paying to get this done as I don't want the main room in our house wrecked. Oh and our rent is only a £100 away from being the same as private rent, so not as if we're living the life of Riley, financially.

KraggleLego · 27/01/2015 16:15

My DH is an immigrant, he smokes and we have an HA house in a stunning part of the world. We also have 4 DC's, he however works like a dog to provide for us. Even so we must win some kind of a bingo jackpot?

NurseDoctor · 27/01/2015 16:15

flashyballs I think you are right. There must have been a serious reason for the work to be done, or she must have made something up to the council. It's more likely to be the latter as if there were something seriously wrong we definitely would have all heard about it! I knew there were downsides to council housing but I truly didn't realise how petty councils were. Surely if someone wants to improve the property they are in at their own expense that should be allowed? Seems crazy to me.
Ludoole Unfortunately I knew quite a few people have had terrible private landlords, it seems the law protects landlords pretty well but there is less support for tenants

ilovechristmas1 · 27/01/2015 16:16

wheelie bins go missing here

some of the student lets have 2 rubbish bins for obvious reasons, that was after the poor students 7 to a house had to bag excess and their tight LL wouldnt pay for an extra one,so the fox's etc tore the bags and rubbish everywhere, after complaints he paid for the extra one, tight git lanlord how can you expect 7 people to use one bin

it would help if the council put them back where they picked them up oppossed to leaving them 3 houses down and all over the place

also our council charges £40 for a replacement

my ex BIL found them great for testing outboard motors

slight rant and of topic Grin

also and i say this as a home owner myself

people that are homeowners are saying cant afford to do things, plaster a wall and im saying a wall not the whole house, you should realise when your a home owner these things will crop up,so you should account for such things

what i dont get is how the hell will these homeowners afford an increase in interest rates, they have never been so low,do you think they will always be so low, what happens then

i remember and paid (just about) rates of 14%,i think people buy without realising how expensive home ownership can be,it's not just paying a morgage

and i dont envy LA tenants, they should recieve a service to keep the home in good condition that is what tenants pay rent, their not getting something for nothing

Tinkerball · 27/01/2015 16:32

I got a new bathroom fitted a few weeks ago, which was a new bath, sink, toilet and cistern and shower base. My old bathroom was ok, just old although the shower base leaked at times, especially down through cracks in my kitchen ceiling and into my cooker. But I had put up lovely tiles around my bath, now obviously I realised there might be a gap with new bath which I said we would deal with. But no apparently they all had to get ripped out and replaced with ugly looking plastic panels because - and this is a good one - that's what's on the bathroom replacement programme because most bathrooms in our council have showers fitted over them, despite us having a "rare" separate shower. So yes they insisted on putting up these panels for the non-existant shower, mad!!!

blackheartsgirl · 27/01/2015 16:47

i'm the same Eat.

My house is a fucking prefab. one of those lovely British Steel Industry houses like this one

When we moved in the council put woodchip in every single room including the bathroom, no plaster underneath the woodchip its just bare plasterboard and it can't come off, it damages the walls which we are liable for if we peel off the woodchip, not that we can it sticks like shite. so nine years it's still bloody there.

we got the letter to cut the grass in winter too..idiots

you have to ask permission for literally everything, laminate floor, satelite dish, fencing, planting shrubs, building a shed. you ask half the time they don't get back to you for months.

our kitchen has to be seen to be believed.

to be pissed off at my friend who is a council tenant
ilovechristmas1 · 27/01/2015 17:03

blackheartsgirl there is still a few of these where i grew up
