To not have a clue how to clean windows without making them look worse?

Seriously, it really pisses me off, I just can't clean the windows so they're actually clean without smears. How the fuck do you do it?
What do you use?

They're double glazed so there's the additional loveliness of two layers of smears :(

Btw. I KNOW how feckless and incompetent this makes me sound, I am a fully functioning grown up in most other ways and my house is reasonably clean.

Well I use Mr Muscle glass and lots of kitchen roll but I am gagging to get my hands on a Karcher Window Vac.

Discopanda · 25/01/2015 13:17

Have you tried a microfibre cloth? Babywipes are pretty great for getting rid of stuff as well

MoominaMama · 25/01/2015 13:17

Equal parts white vinegar and hot water.

Wipe on with one cloth.

Wipe excess off with another.

Buff/finish with micrifibre cloth.

Vinegar smell goes quickly. Windows sparkle! Smile

I use Cillit Bang. Great results.

ghostyslovesheep · 25/01/2015 13:17

water, vinegar and news paper - old school Grin

PacificDogwood · 25/01/2015 13:19

Mr Muscle glass stuff - the smell is ammonia
Crunched up news paper is good for drying.

And the Karcher window vac is fab Grin

If they are really dirty outside, wash them down with slightly soapy water. When they are dry you can then use a bit of window cleaning spray buffed off with newspaper. It's the best way to clean windows and mirrors. No smears or smudges as long as you don't go crazy with the spray.

PixieofCatan · 25/01/2015 13:20

White vinegar. It's fantastic!

Bicnod · 25/01/2015 13:21

Water, vinegar and karcher window vac Smile

LadyLuck10 · 25/01/2015 13:21

Karcher! It's brilliant.

Charlesroi · 25/01/2015 13:21

Spray bottle - 3/4 vinegar, 1/4 water and add a couple of drops of washing up liquid.
Spray windows and wipe off with a microfibre cloth. Polish.
It really works - honest - and your house only smells like a chip shop for about 10 minutes.

waithorse · 25/01/2015 13:22

O would love a window vac. Blush

twentyten · 25/01/2015 13:22

Karcher window vac- it is awesome. So fast.

museumum · 25/01/2015 13:28

We don't buy newspapers.
Hot water is an interesting suggestion - works on glasses / dishes.

Sounds like vinegar is the stuff.
Will kitchen roll work instead of newspaper?

I've just realised our steam mop might have a window attachment - anyone tried that?

Never clean them when the sun's on them.

How does double glazing give you more smears? Is it secondary glazing?

CatsClaus · 25/01/2015 13:33

if they are well filthy then I use hot soapy water, frames and panes, dry with an old towel then shine up with that window spray and kitchen roll

if they are not too bad then it's just spray and kitchen roll

also...top tip, is to do your polishing in different directions for inside and out...then if you spot any smears you know which side they are on.

YANAgurl1973 · 25/01/2015 13:35

Karcher is amazing

LuckySaint · 25/01/2015 13:37

Karcher window vac, they are amazing! I got mine for free, using Tesco clubcard vouchers.

Lonecatwithkitten · 25/01/2015 13:41

Method window cleaner and a microfibre cloth.

LaLa5 · 25/01/2015 13:42

Newspaper is great for windows!

museumum · 25/01/2015 13:43

If you use a steam cleaner do you soapy water wash the manly outside first?

TheOnlyOliviaMumsnet · 25/01/2015 13:46

@TitchyThings

Never clean them when the sun's on them.

Why not?? Surely that's how you see which bits are dirty?
Confused

Behooven · 25/01/2015 13:50

If you clean them when the sun is on them it makes them very streaky.

Another vote for the window vac here.
