To not have a clue how to clean windows without making them look worse?

Seriously, it really pisses me off, I just can't clean the windows so they're actually clean without smears. How the fuck do you do it?
What do you use?

They're double glazed so there's the additional loveliness of two layers of smears :(

Bucket/bowl of hot water with washing up liquid (WUL). 2 soft cloths, I use old dishcloths and a squeegee. Wash window with cloth, squeegee in down direction. Use dry cloth to wipe water from edges of glass. When dry, check for squeegee marks and just buff off with cloth.

White vinegar water and a Karcher

Caboodle · 26/01/2015 09:11

Another vote her for a Karcher. Bloody brilliant machine. My house has loads of floor to ceiling windows...I get them all done in no time now. Worth every penny.

DandyHighwayman · 26/01/2015 09:30

Ooh softened water - would that be what I empty outta the tumble dryer reservoir? #thicko

PigletJohn · 26/01/2015 09:43

Probably. It contains dust and fluff so is not suitable for batteries or irons, but worth a try on windows.

HappenstanceMarmite · 26/01/2015 17:40

Is an E-cloth the same thing as a Microfibre cloth?

MrsMarigold · 26/01/2015 17:42

Windolene and newspaper

AppleYumYum · 26/01/2015 20:00

I don't think so, they have different textures depending on what area of the house they are for.

Hatespiders · 26/01/2015 20:03

We have a lovely man called Andy and he comes every 6 weeks to clean our windows. He does the lot (including utility extension and conservatory) plus the frames and sills. And he charges £8. We give him £10 though.

museumum · 26/01/2015 21:29

Well I did them. They're not perfect but they are better than before rather than worse so that's a step in the right direction.
Next time I'm going to try using my steam cleaner.

Happenstance yes, e-cloths are a brand of microfibre cloth and are the daddy ime. I never pay full price for them, you can usually find em cheaper in Homesense/TK Maxx, or possibly online somewhere.

HappenstanceMarmite · 28/01/2015 19:10

Thanks Kahlo

Sorry haven't read the full thread, but nilglass off amazon works. Better than any other product including Mr muscle or similar. It is blue, and it does not smear.

I found this out after extensive research because I had wasted two afternoons trying and failing with every damn strategy recommended on here, in my window laden house.

My window cleaner is doing the outsides as I type. Inside, I follow his way, which is hot water, a squeeze of Nilglass or vinegar and the key is to squeegee off then polish with a cotton or microfibre cloth.
